Given the output of sysstat in your mail, it probably won't help to add bandwidth, however, if you were to experience a different workload, more cached reads for example, you could easily exceed the capacity of a single 100Mb ethernet.

EtherChannel trunking

Greetings. Has anyone configured a quad 100 ethernet card with EtherChannel trunking? I searched the archives for this lists and didn't find any subject heading with "EtherChannel" or "trunk." My proposed plan is (I hope it is this simple): o create a virtual interface with `vif create` o replace the ifconfig line in the rc file: ifconfig e0 mediatype 100tx-fd `hostname`-e0 with ifconfig vif1 mediatype ??? `hostname`-vif0 o reboot the filer There is probably a more elegant way to do this live and online, by downing e0 and then upping vif0, but I'll be doing this off hours anyway, so a reboot is not a problem. I've got a brand new F740 running ONTAP 5.2.1, and I'm new to NetApp filers, so please be gentle with a newbie to this technology. What a nice machine, though. I can't vouch for whether or not a Filer's CPU can be upgraded but I can point something else out.... A 90MHz Pentium has an internal clock speed of 60MHz and a multiplier of 1.5 (60x1.5=90). On motherboards that allow configuration changes there are usually (at least) two jumpers, one for clock speed and another for the multiplier. A Pentium 133 has an internal speed of 66 and a multiplier of 2 (66x2=132 or 133). So, as you can see, a simple chip swap won't work (actually, it might work but without proper mother board support you'd still have a Pentium 90). The 1000-fx designation on the filer is just a string and has no effect on the encoding on the wire. Unfortunately, it is also wrong. It should read 1000-sx. You should have no problems connecting to your switch. Can anybody tell me why I have a Gigabit Ethernet card from Network Appliance that says 1000-base-sx on the card yet Netapp does not support the SX encoding. The F230's performance is not limited by CPU clock rate. It is limited by the performance of the host bridge (a.k.a. north bridge). The host bridge defines memory bandwidth and PCI bandwidth. Overclocking the F230 won't solve a heavily loaded filer. I had a lot of fun setting it up. :) And actually, I didn't even do the method without the port number, although I always wanted to go back and change that once I figured out how to do it on the Portmaster. That being said, if you don't like Livingston, er, Lucent, you can probably get Xylogics, er, Bay Networks, to work just as well. And as a former Purdue student, I have nothing against conserver at all, but I've yet to see it in full implementation across an entire machine room to know if it's truly worth the effort or not. FreeBSD3.0 compatible with Packet Engines Gigabit?

I have a customer who recently upgraded from FreeBSD2.8 to FreeBSD3.0 and they can't seem to get their PacketEngines gigabit card to work. The card worked flawlessly with FreeBSD2.8. Is there anyone out there running this type of configuration? We had similar problems on our F630s. Turns out this was due to the system backplane stack height. The backplane standoffs were about 3mm too short! Since we have always been running 5.x.x of some flavor I'm not sure if it's OS related or not. Check to see if the card edges are fully seated in the backplane. The watchdog resets were a problem only after I had reseated all cards and the system was up for a couple of days/weeks (it did vary that much). Flex in the chassis was enough to dislodge the environment card that has the stupid watchdog cable on it. One system was bad enough the CPU board had "intermittent" connection to the rest of the system. The frustrating part was that Adaptec was the only site in this area to have this problem :( And it took me about 5 weeks to find it wasn't bad hardware. I went to a local hardware store and picked up some washers to pick up the backplane. A real pain to install but fixed the problems. After NetApp had found out about this manufacturing problem, all our F630 chassis were replaced with newer rev units that fix the stack height. watchdog resets

We have had a particularly annoying problem with our 540 filer over the last several months. We keep getting watchdog resets. As a matter of fact we just got another as I was composing this message. We get an average of one every other day. We have checked the cables, reseated cards, replaced cards, replaced the head. I am going to start replacing the power supplies on the shelves tonight. If that doesn't work, we'll replace the SCSI cables between the shelves and the head. This problem started after we upgraded the firmware and OS to 1.11a and 5.0.2R3 respectively. NetApp Customer Satisfaction Survey

All, On behalf of Network Appliance, I'd like to apologize for the multiple survey requests that were sent to many of our customers recently. We had a process breakdown that resulted in a large number of surveys being sent all at once, in some cases, as many as 5 or 6 to the same customer. The survey has been stopped while we correct the process problem and address feedback regarding the frequency of the survey. Customer feedback is important to NetApp as we seek to continually improve our products and services. The responses we've received through the survey have been instrumental in driving improvements throughout the entire company, but we've also heard that customers want to be surveyed less often. The original process was to survey for every closed case, but many customers have indicated that once a month is more preferable. For this reason, when the survey process starts again, we will insure that no customer is surveyed more than once in any 30 day period. Obnoxious Satisfaction Survey

Anyone open a service call with NetApp within the last week? I opened two last week. After closing the first call, I received an email with the subject "Your Satisfaction with Network Appliance" that contained a survey to evaluate my satisfaction with the call. Since I was happy with the outcome I decided to fill out the survey and sing the proaises of NetApp tech support. (I can be a real bastard when I have a problem and need their help and I was hoping this would somehow make up for that in the cosmic scheme of things.) That done I deleted the email and went back to pretending to work. The next morning, after closing my second service call, I received another email survey from NetApp. (Actually, the email says NetApp "engaged CustomerCast, an independent research company, to conduct the following short email survey".) I decided that since I just sent out a glowing report I could ignore this surevey. ...But I was wrong!!! Every morning since I colsed the call I've received this survey. I even called NetApp yesterday to see if this could be stopped and this morning I received two copies of the survey! Does anyone know who I can call? Where to I send my first born to put and end to this? The email address we have listed with NetApp is an internal mailing list (so the other 6 people in my group can handle issues if I'm out) and I'm getting nasty grams... :( Getting spam'd by some weasely little con-artist trying to get me to take part in a "MAKE MONEY FAST" scheme is one thing, but I certainly don't expect this from a company I do business with. jason --- Jason D. Thanks for you help with this, it's greatly appreciated. BTW, I the email stated that surveys will be sent out after every closed case. Was sampling considered at all? It might be better received than email after every case. Then again, I wonder how many people actually have to open cases more than every couple of months. jason

Jason, I'm looking into this now. I don't know at this point if this is a problem with our mail server, CustomerCast's or some other glitch. Are you getting spammed for the same exact case, or have different cases been closed over the last few days? We're certainly not in the business of trying to spam anyone, especially after they had nice things to say about us :) I'm investigating now and will get back to you with the outcome. This holds for any Windows NT resident resource (shares, printers etc...) as well as filer based resources. If you can not put the needed trust relationship in place (for whatever reason), your only option is to enable and use the so-called "anonymous access" provision which is provided within the Windows NT security model. On a filer, this is quite simple (as ever! :-)). You just need to set the "cifs.guest_account" option to a valid user identity that is defined within the filer's /etc/passwd file (or the NIS passwd.byname equivalent thereof). So, for example, if you... options cifs.guest_account dom2usrs ... then the CIFS users defined in Dom2 will be able to access the filer anonymously, and they will be mapped to the UNIX "dom2usrs" account (which in turn maps to a UNIX UID) for the puproses of assessing what they can and cannot do to the file system. More specifically, their "dom2usrs" identity will be used to assess what they can and cannot do to a UNIX-Style file system. On an NTFS-Style file system, they will be controlled by NTFS permissions, and their identity will, I believe, be defined as the Windows NT "AnonymousLogon" well known SID (S-1-5-7, if you care! :-)). The shares that the users in Dom2 want to connect to, as well as the areas of the file system they wish to access will have to be somehow accessible to these accounts. This will usually mean manipulating file system permissions and share level ACLs to provide these users with the level of access they need. Unfortunately you do not have the option to control these users access individually. Keith

A tale of two domains...

I am in need of some help. Here is the background... I have two NT domains, Dom1 and Dom2. The domains are NOT trusted and Dom2 is essentially a closed network, making no connections whatsoever to Dom1. I have one netfiler (740 with Ontap 5.1.2r3) who (through CIFS) is a member of Dom1. One NIC port is connected to Dom1's Subnet and another NIC port is connected to Dom2. Whew, thanks for staying with me so far. The problem: I need to be able for clients of Dom1 to place data onto the filer so that members of Dom2 can access the data and vice versa. Has anyone attempted this or does anyone have any suggestions? Any constructive input would be appreciated. I thank you ahead of time. Maybe someone at NetApp can answer this question... What are the copying/license terms for ndmpcopy? The source code is copyright Network Appliance and PDC, contains a few disclaimers, but no terms for source modification and copying. Maybe an Open Source license would be in order. - Dan

Using MORE than one narrow shelf on a single Wide Bus

Hi all... Here's a question that I still have never got a straight answer on from anyone: Using a F230 server with two wide SCSI busses. I have a wide shelf on my 9b bus, and a narrow DEC-Shelf (with personality module) on my 9a bus. My Q is this: On my 9a bus(only); since the personality module allows you to set the beginning SCSI/Wide address of the narrow shelf on the wide bus, could one essentially run TWO narrow shelves on a wide bus? This would be done by setting the first narrow shelf to map narrow-SCSI ID's 0-6 to the wide-SCSI bus 0-6, and setting the personality module in the SECOND narrow shelf (on 9a) to superposition the second narrow-SCSI shelf's ID's 0-6 to the SCSI-wide bus ID's of 8-15? If SO... then I could buy a personality module for one of my extra narrow shelves lying around and use TWO narrow shelves on the 9a bus of our F230! If not.. I am thinking about ripping it all out and putting it on a Linux box running SW RAID and SAMBA. But I would really like to keep it set up on the NetApp box if possible. The symlink feature works due to a quirk in the implementation. Home Dirs work by resolving the path <cifs.home_dir>/<user_name> using an internal NFS like operation. Since the operation is NFS like, it knows how to follow symlinks. As Keith said, we now have the root of a virtual share so we obey the NT security model from that point on. First off, thanks to those who replied to my previous post about moving large amounts of data between netapps. I am trying most of the recommendations and have come to ndmpcopy. I have everything set up to copy data from one netapp to a second one, but I am getting an error.
