Well, I've tested it with separate user. I can assess with user foobar and it key to management interface, I can access SP with user foobar and password, but key is completely ignored. Kinda annoying, but seems that ssh keys is not accepted by SP... Hi, Anyone know if it is possible, or will ever be possible, to use an Oracle database, or even MSSQL, for DFM/OC5? With our dependency on on it now for provisioning & protection I'd sure sleep better if I knew this thing was HA. Seems odd that SMO uses an Oracle DB to keep track of it's business, but DFM can't/doesn't. --- Scott Eno

Hi all, do you any idea about the "real" meaning of that "no" in the CM colum, last row? No "fpolicy" means as example that I can't use Enterprise Vault File System Archiving? Monitoring and scan features such the one offered by Varonis or Symantec Data Insight? File blocking policies suche the one offered by NSS or NTP QFS? All those software that use fpolicy? No "VSS" means that is not possible to access to the snapshot area of shares/foleders/files using the MMC? (right click, previous version ecc) This worries myself. Ciao! Expand SATA aggregate or buy SAS disks

Hi, We have a small metrocluster with 2TB SATA disks in DS14mk2 trays, mostly used for VMware. We desperately need more IOPs, and are tossing up another 14x2TB SATA tray, which would have the benefit of just expanding the aggregate, vs 12 of 600GB 15krpm SAS (half a DS4243), which would give more IOPs but be more admin overhead since we'd have to move VMs amongst the shelves. Capacity isn't a problem, and when we built the metrocluster the ATTO 6500N fibre bridge wasn't available, so SATA was our only option at the time. We're getting quotes for both options, but does anyone have an opinion on expanding the SATA aggregate vs setting up a new SAS one? vfiler migrate, snapmirror and 7.3.x to 8.1.x?

I googled on this and found an earlier thread here that I actually started. Was trying to migrate a vfiler "whole" to a new cluster, but from 7.3.5.1P% to 8.0.2 and with no snapmirror license. Ended up doing it via rsync to a new vfiler. Looking into getting SnapMirror licensing now. And the target cluster is now 8.1 7-mode. To confirm, I can move a vfiler from 7.3.5.1P5 to 8.1 "whole" with just the minor interruptions during the cutover? Source and target are on the same subnet.

compression DOT 8.1-7mode

Has anyone turned on compression on their primary storage for DOT 8.1x 7-mode? I am upgrading our heads (6040's) to 8.1p2 and wanted to know what others are using.. These filers are primarily used for FC and VMWare with mostly Windows boxes with 60% dedupe savings. Its also acts as an Exchange CCR for Exchange 2007... I read the TR that shows the gains (if any) that is on the NOW site.. Any info and or opinions is appreciated in advance. e0M port as default gateway?

Hello all; We have some N6240's (rebadged FAS3xxx series) on which the default gateway is set to an IP that routes out the e0M interface. As such, if the e0M port (wrench port) goes offline, essentially functionality on that controller ceases as communication with AD, NIS, etc. stops working. We have 10GbE ports on these devices -- we could easily configure the default gateways to use one of those instead, but I am unclear as to what best practice is here. We access management functionality through the IP bound on the e0M port now. How do the rest of you set things up? Ray

Arp broadcasts from single vifs

Greetings, I thought I posted about this a while back but don't seem to be able to find anything in my email or web searches. My apologies if this is a duplicate. We have some 7.3.5.1P4 filers running static multimode vifs, combined into a second level single vif for failover. One vif has 4 or 6 1gig links, and the other is a 10gig network port. We use the prefer to run the 10gig as the primary. All this seems to work fine and pulling cables, etc fails over properly. My question is whether there is another way to set up a failover configuration where the inactive links are not broadcasting the "who has xxx" arp requests every 5-6 seconds? With 20 standby links, this generates ~345K broadcast per day. This is causing arpwatch to create a very large file and be moderately useless due to the noise. We do have switches that could do LACP/dynamic multimode, but the network guide says these cannot be put in a second level vif. non disruptive HBA card installation on FAS3170 possible?

Hi folks, I kind of doubt that this is possible since our FAS3170 pair is in the same physical box and the power supplies are shared by both controllers, etc. If I am wrong, then how do you do it? Power down one controller with the RLM ? Then how do you install the HBA without disrupting the other controller? 8.1 performance improvments?

Hello All, We're in the initial stages of planning an upgrade of our v3170 pair (a 3Par T800 behind it) from 7.3.5.1P5 to (probably) 8.1P2 7-mode or higher. Our reasons include larger aggregates, some better troubleshooting tools that NetApp has told us will help figure out some ongoing issues, and especially a hoped-for performance improvement due to more legacy code having been updated to fully use multiple procs instead of living in the Kahuna namespace and locking onto CPU3. Again, this is what we've heard from the vendor. Can anyone offer experience with performance changes when upgrading from 7.x to 8.1? Ignoring the performance problems (I've seen a couple of KB articles) that are fixed by P2? Anecdotal experience would be a start but real numbers would be outstanding. How many retries on a disk before you pre-fail?

shrinking volumes on 8.1?

What factors do I need to consider when resizing a volume downward? Will I always be able to shrink an over provisioned volume down to near the size used or do I need to worry about fragmentation or the WAFL equivalent? I ask because we've been using thin provisioning on a new filer in cases where we sense the customer might be overestimating their need (I know we're the only shop where this happens). But now that filer is about half full and we'd rather not need to stress over whether it's oversubscribed if we could just make it all Thick and reclaim any hoarded space when we need to.

After opening support cases at netapp one of the engineers told me that they also gets alot of performance cases with this release an even though he can't find a bug that feets with our logs and perfstat he recommend upgrade to 8.1.1rc1 Following his advise after upgrade I saw major performance improvment I mean throughput went up from 70-80 MB/s to 250-300 MB/s and latency also went down The same result occurred on more then one 8.1 system after upgrade to 8.1.1rc1 I saw at least 50% improvment in throughput Today on new system I install I completely skip th GA version an go straight to 8.1.1rc1 So my advice if you on this release and suffering from performance and don't know if you have enough disks or the right controller upgrade first then check Sent from Samsung Mobile

Ontap 8.1 performance issue

Hi all As a netapp ASP I spent quite alot of my time installing netapp's at costumers site and resolving their issues and I wanted to share my recent experience with 8.1 Usually I try to avoid RC release but until recently the fas22xx didn't gave us much choice Once the 8.1 GA released I felt more free to install this release. but after I started to get performance complains from my costumers I wasn't so sure After investigating some of the complains I felt that they are justified something is off in system I can't put my finger on it but its looks the system don't perform as expected even though the system don't look busy. ndmpcopy from 6.x to 8.1

Has anyone used ndmpcopy to migrate volumes from ontap 6.5 to 8.1 without going through any intermediate steps? The 8.1 docs say qtree snapmirror doesn't support source volumes prior to 6.5, so I'm looking for success stories on possible alternatives in case it doesn't work as advertised. rsync takes a long long time, but it works fine. This is all linux data, nfs. -Jon

dfpm command assistance

For the couple of folks out there that may actually use the dfpm commands, anyone know how to designate a subnet in the following command? dfpm dataset nfsaccess -w ???.???.???.??? It won't let me use ".0/24"-type notation, so how else could I do it? x.x.x.0?
