It's been some time since I've used this tool so curiosity got the best of me. I looked in one of the Microsoft NT4 training manuals and found the following tidbit: "The Windows NT Server Migration Tool for NetWare is used to migrate NetWare servers to computers running Windows NT Server. This tool transfers user and group accounts, login scripts, and files and directories form NetWare servers to Windows NT server domain controllers." It makes sense that the transfer of user accounts/groups and login scripts would fail but not the transfer of data only (even though it says otherwise). Were the attempted migrations of data only? What is the output of 'cifs sessions -s' after someone tries to access the share? Are the group assignments as expected? I know having local groups in share-level acls works, so I'm not sure what the problem is in your setup. One thing to check is that the local group is for the filer, not for the domain. Did you do "User->Select Domain" then enter "\\filername" in usrmgr before creating the local group? btw, if you are planning on sharing data in a multiprotocol way (i.e. with NFS users accessing the same data as NT users), you don't want to rely on share level acls to control access, since they are not used for NFS clients. Normally, in an NT environment the share level acls are left wide open and the access control is done via file-level acls. Let me know if you can't figure this out. Yes, there's a sample script (batch file) that can be scheduled with the AT service. Here's a snippet from section 5.2 of the doc: Once the filer and Windows NT have been setup, schedule a batch process using the Windows NT "at" command. Cifs permissions ???

The following is happening. Any ideas of what to do? 1. I have created a folder called test. 2. Within server manager I create a share for test. 3. Withing user manager I create a user called dude, a global group called dudes_global with several users, and a local group called dudes_local with several users. First I give one person (dude) permission to access test and everything works fine. (Dude can access test and nobody else can) Second I remove dude from the permissions list, add a global group (dudes_global) to have permission to access test and everything works fine. Dump command issues?

Currently we have a F720 filer and a ATL Powerstor L500 tape library attached locally. We are running into a issue when we try to dump to multiple tapes. If we use the command below, it is supposed to dump our entire vol0 (90GB of data) to multiple tapes in our tape library. rsh -l dump 0uf urst0a,urst0a /vol/vol0 Unfortunately, the dump command above backs up to the first tape, then rewinds the tape when it is full but never unloads it. The first tape is then overwritten as the dump continues. The dump command above does not unload the tape and continue the dump onto the second tape in the library. Has anyone else experienced this before, or does anyone have any recommendations to correct the problem? Thank you, Mike Ball

When you place the drives from the "old" filer into the drive bays of the "new filer", I would suggest that you boot from floppy and make sure that the new filer can see all the drives. Since you are using a new "head" ... then you are also going to be using a new NVRAM card. The NVRAM actually puts an entry into the labels of the disks so that the disks know that this data belongs to this filer/NVRAM card. This is just in case there is any leftover data in the NVRAM card before shutdown ... When you boot, the filer will want to re-write the labels on the new drives placing the new NVRAM card signature onto the raid labels ... If you boot and all the drives are not seen, some of the labels will be re-written and some will not. You will then have mismatch raid labels and the machine will not boot (too many disks missing from the raid array) ... This may sound too simple but it seems as if there is no physical connection between the filer and the NT box. It doesn't really sound like a filer specific issue. Is it safe to assume that you're using the NetWare Migration Tool that ships with NT server and that the NT server has TCP/IP installed and configured? Is the filer licensed for CIFS and does it have a machine account in the domain? Can you see the filer from the NT server when NOT outside of the NWM Tool? Sorry for the list of questions. The new shelves will have two LRCs as required for CF. In order to minimize downtime while we are upgrading our current shelves with a second LRC, we'd like to setup the new filer next to the current filer, then swap all of the disks from our current filer into the new shelves. I am assuming that if we do this, when we power up the new filer, it will assume the identity of our current filer. Then we can upgrade our current shelves at our leisure. Does this sound like it will work? Are there any compatibility issues between drives and shelves? Any other words of advice about upgrading to CF? Need help regarding quotas

We are currently migrating the home directories of 1200 users to our 740 (dot 5.2.1) All of our clients are either NT 4.0 (85%) or Win 95 (15%) and the filesystem on the netfiler is NT only. The quota file is configured as such: * user@/vol/uservol/users 100M #default Users Which should give everyone a 100Mb limit by default. Immediately after moving a user (with BackupExec-thus preserving the acl's) i run a program from TrustedSystems called reacle.exe that will allow me to force ownership of the files to the proper owner. All this said and done, the quotas are working correctly (no error messages) and are showing the users and thier limits. However, the actual file space accredited to the users is incorrect. It seems that only the files that they, themselves touch are assigned to them. I have users who i know are owners of more than 100Mb of files who, when the quota report is running, only appear to have 40K credited to them. Here is an example report for users who have more than 80Mb in their home directories. This really isn't a simple question. First, is the app running as a service, or is the machine left with a "user" logged on? I presume you are talking about the app running on an NT server... If the app is running as a user, the problem is trivial, put a net use command in that user's logon script. If the app is running as a service, (and nobody is logged on when it is running), the plot thickens. There is NO CLEAN answer that I know of. There are some NT registry hacks to run an application at startup. This app can be a script. Alternately, you can run a script from the windows AT command (or the easier WINAT, inf the resource kit). The main issue will be making sure the same "username" is running all of the processes, because of possible conflicts in permissions. Attached are a couple of clippings from TechNet, which MAY work. I haven't tried them. I'm a Student and working on a migration project. Now I have the following question: I want to migrate from Novell Netware 3.x to my Netapp (F720). I want to realise this with a programm called "Netware Migration tool (Nwconv). If I want to choose a Windows NT server and I select the Netapp (he is in a domain called D00) the programm comes back with the following problem: "cannot connect to server: The Network name cannot be found". I don't know if this is a problem on the Netapp (perhaps a services or something) or that I have to look somewhere else Greetings, Jan-Dirk

There is a Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit utility named "autoexnt" can be used to ensure the redirector is started and the connection is made to the filer at boot up. You must have a copy of the Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit, and the companion CD. Autoexnt is installed by simply copying autoexnt.exe and servmess.dll from the \ntreskit directory to the Systemroot\System32 directory. Create a batch file with the commands to map a drive to the Filer and save it as "autoexnt.bat" in the Systemroot\System32 directory. Type "instexnt install" at the command prompt to install the service. Use the /interactive switch if you want to see the commands executing in a command window during boot time ("instexnt install /interactive"). For example: D:\ntreskit.40>instexnt install /interactive CreateService AutoExNT SUCCESS with InterActive Flag turned ON. Finally, to configure the AutoExNT service to run when you start your computer (during boot) 1. Double-click Services in Control Panel. 2. In the Services list, click AutoExNT. 3. Click Startup and, in the Startup Type box, click Automatic. 4. Choose OK. Example autoexnt.bat: d:\winnt\system32\net start workstation d:\winnt\system32\net use t: \\toaster\home If you log in, the drive is already mapped and shows up in Windows Explorer. You cannot "disconnect" the drive mapping from within explorer which insulates it from user error a bit as well. Good luck! I would like NT (4.0SP4, if it matters), to attach a drive on system startup, rather than having to be logged in... For various reasons, I cannot use UNC paths in my application, so I need to map the drive when the system boots, with a username and password... Is this possible? My filer is running 4.3.4, but I think I'm going to upgrade tonight to 5.2.1...

Cor I have filers from the F330 to the F760. In the four years that I have been using the filers, I've NEVER had a production system go down! The filers are by far the best piece of hardware I have (I have a number of Sun Enterprise Systems) and I'm NOT taking anything away from Sun. Hey James! :) Right now id buy almost anything over NotUp. We've had more crashes with our new F720 the last 2 weeks than our previous Sun had in 2 years, and thats including fsck. Cor

Hi, Is it possible to add gigabit ethernet interfaces to a virtual interface?? I've tried with Ontap 5.3 and it says: toaster1> vif add trunk1 e6 vif: e6 cannot be attached to a vif Does this mean that trunking works only with fast ethernet? Will 1000Fx cards be supported in a future release? Thanks, Rani
