Looks like there's no simulator later than 8.1.1 available yet. Is there any way to upgrade a simulator to 8.1.1P1? Randy, I know there was at least one BURT for Mac behavior, one in particular that could hang a filer. I think that may have been NFS though. I was looking at the 8.1.1P1 release yesterday. There were several CIFS related fixes in it. We do virtually no CIFS so I just skimmed over them. You may check it out and see if anything was fixed or applies. Hello All, We're gearing up to upgrade our v3170 pair from 7.3.5P5 to 8.1.1 at the end of this month. We're testing some things against a 8.1.1 simulator and have had reports of CIFS timeouts when running tests from a Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) client. Performance on the simulator is obviously abysmal when we're running a VMware appliance on a Windows desktop using a single SATA disk, but this appears to be more of a protocol timeout issue. The user gets a spinning wheel for several minutes and only in Snow Leopard. Anyone know of any issues with 8.1.1 CIFS and Mac? We had heard some anecdotal accounts of Office issues but we're tested for those. Hope to hear from you, Randy

Graphs from our monitoring system show the typical random peaks and valleys averaging around 20-30% utilization, then suddenly a plateau at 100% lasting for an entire week (and still ongoing). CMDB for storage?

Hi all; For those of you who track your SAN/NAS devices (including your NetApps) in a CMDB, I'm interestd in how you lay out your CI's. Do you have a CI for a "cluster" (two controllers), individual CI's for controllers themselves and additional CI's for shelves and disks with relationships mapped between? Our CMDB is a bit on the simplistic side, so am trying to figure out where folks have cut corners from the ideal. I'd love to track things like shares as well so we can maintain contact information and relationships with hardware for outage notifications. Mainly curious how others are handling this, and also what CMDB tools you use. Thanks, Ray

block zeroing

I have a question. A month or so back we had massive performance problems on our 3170A and disks were 100% for no apparent reason (SATA drives). Netapp eventually tracked down the problem to snapshot deletion. It seems that blocks are zeroed as they are returned to the aggregate. It was taking longer than 60 mins to delete the hourly snapshots. So, my questions are: 1) has anybody else seen this problem and been forced to avoid hourly snaps? 2) is there any way to disable the zeroing of freed blocks? 3) has anybody heard of a plan for a fix which would allow us to use hourly snaps again? It seems bizarre that a useful feature, which we have used for a long time, has become unusable. Basically, it appears I/O is doubled becuase the blocks are written when used, then written when freed. Regards, pdg

simulator 8.1.1 VMware appliance?

I'm a little torqued that NetApp has opted to change from a tarball that installs on a linux platform to a virtual appliance approach. In this case I've trying to test for an upgrade from 7.3.5 to 8.1.1 and even if the upgrade proces is different for a simulator I'd like to be able to upgrade the simulator in place to confirm that iSCSI clients can connect to existing LUNs. I did try to upgrade the simulator using the same packages the physical filer will use (v3170 HA pair) with no luck. Tried both packages from the NA download site and on "software update <file> -r" both complain about the wrong CPU architecture and bail out. So now I've moved on to bringing up an 8.1.1 simulator and maybe using ndmpcopy or snapmirror to migrate those LUNs. But still having trouble. The tarball I downloaded for the 8.1.1 VM doesn't have any VMX file in it, just a pair of VMDKs? VWware player won't let me create a new VM and then reassign a different disk? We do run vSphere here but the old simulator required the NICs to run in promiscuous mode, is that still the case? If so, I'm not inclined to put the sim on our production VM farm as it would mean tweaking production network interfaces. Anyone had any luck with the 8.x VMware appliance simulator and VMware Player?

I need to check if the firewall is open between filers on snapmirror ports. I cannot find a "telnet" command so I can telnet from fi ler to to filer on specific port. How do I check from filer CMD line if the ports on the snapmirror partner are open Thanks!

simple max spindles question

I have a simple question about an old FAS3020 HA pair that we have. I looked it up in the Hardware Universe tool and it says that the maximum spindle count is 168. Is this the maximum for the pair, or per head? In a failover scenario, can the system only handle 168 spindles total, or 336 total? E2K10 on VMWARE. Which best practice?

Hi all, a couple of time I've experienced some performances issues with Exchange 2010 installed on "luns" on a NetApp filer. Worst cases of course when I've some secondary passive DAG setup on SATA aggregates. I've almost read everything about best practice both on VMware FC SAN storage and Exchange natively setup on FC LUNs; there's also a very interesting TR about E2K10 on 2240 FAS with SATA only! But there's something not clear. In this environment: Storage NetApp vSphere 5.1 E2K10 Vdisk diretti (non rdm) Datastore FCP Which are the parameters you consider to best optimize everything? The VMware ones? The Exchange ones? A mean between the two? :) I.e are read_realloc or extent options really useful? Regards, Dott. But if that was passive why it had LUNs connected? Maybe do you mean with init logged in? On passive node you should be able to power off the LAN connections too without for this to loose volumes in the cluster container... ICMP Fragmentation Needed requests not being honored?

Troubleshooting an issue with SMTP mail delivery for autosupport on an IBM N6240 (FAS 3050 I believe). Mail conversation starts up but then never succeeds fully. Mail server just shows a reset or that the NetApp dropped connection. Ran pktt during the SMTP conversation on the NetApp side and saw that we were receiving ICMP Fragmentation Needed messages (requesting MTU 1400) from an upstream router. However, the NetApp continued to send its data at full frame size (1500 bytes - overhead or 1448 bytes). These don't get through and the SMTP conversation stalls. Confirmed that delivery via a local SMTP server which doesn't require fragmentation works fine. This is ONTAP 8.0.2P3. Anyone have any idea why the network stack isn't honoring the fragmentation requests? Thanks, Ray

Key thing we're seeing is that NFS/CIFS file serving activity grinds to a halt when we lose connectivity to AD/NIS servers (the communication for which currently goes through e0M due to default gateway setup). I presume this is expected behavior, but am a bit surprised that NFS file serving would hang for activity not involving an NIS UID. Presumably any NFS requests gets mapped to a UID and would require an NIS lookup? Anyone run into this before? Hello, i installed OnCommand Insight Report and create some reports in Cognos. It is possible to create a report with multiple Querries (in Cognos)? I don't find a way to merge my custom querries into one report. I have one report for every Querry at the moment. Any documentation or tips are welcome! greets Steffen

trying to upgrade a netapp simulator in anticipation of upgrading tungsten

Hey there, We're running a NetApp simulator running 7.3.5 and have connected iSCSI clients that we've upgraded SnapDrive on to 6.4. Now we're ready to upgrade the simulator to 8.1.1. I was under the impression that upgrading a simulator meant shutting down the simulator and running the new version's simultator installer, where it would sense the previous install and upgrade it in place. But a look at the NOW site shows only a VMware appliance for 8.x, looks like the approach has changed? Is there any way to upgrade a 7.3.5 simulator in place to 8.1.1, preserving existing LUNs? Or to migrate or copy existing LUNs from a 7.3.5 simulator to an 8.1.1? Randy

Upgrading SnapDrive without reconnecting LUNs?

Hello All, We're preparing to upgrade a v3170 running 7.3.5 to 8.1.1 and will first need to upgrade a number of SnapDrive clients to 6.4 or higher. Our DBA's are testing the SnapDrive upgrade and so far have been unable to do so without needing to recreate all their connections (essentially the iSCSI disks mounted in the SQL cluster go away and they need to reconnect to the LUNs). Is there a better way to do this? Seems like in a perfect world, we'd just run some .exe to upgrade SnapDrive, reboot and find all as it was? Hope to hear from you, Randy

limit concurrent de-dupe processes?

Hello All, I'm searching through previous stuff looking for this but hoping someone will know it offhand. We're struggling with a v3170 running 7.3.5 that has a number of volumes being deduped automatically when their changed blocks hit 20%. You may know that the SIS process is a good example of a process that relies heavily on the Kahuna namespace and tends to hit one CPU hard while everything else stumbles. Do I remember correctly that there's an option somewhere that limits the maximum number of concurrent SIS processes? Or do I need to script something weird. Randy

CIFS with Unix sec. style and recent MacOS 10 and MS Word

Hi Toasters, We are sharing a Unix sec. style qtree to (at least one) MacOS 10.7 client via CIFS and they are having problems saving files with MS Word. The client writes the new file to a temporary file and then fails to rename it into place. The temp file exists and is correct because we can verify this from a NFS client. A Unix sec. style share appears to be a VFAT (not NTFS) volume to a CIFS client. Under the hood the filer enforces Unix permissions, of course, but all that is hidden from the CIFS client. I suspect that MacOS is looking for a permission that VFAT does not support and is erroneously assuming it cannot rename the file. Just curious if this rings a bell with anyone and if there is any documentation or workaround for it. We are running DOT 8.0.1 7mode on the filer. I need to get together with the user who is having trouble and use the sectrace command to see if the filer is actually denying access. We are having an issue on 2 linux servers that we think may be related to locking. ipspaces vs static net routes

Hi we are running 8.1 on our 3270 clusters with 17 vfilers on 5 different vlans The vfilers currently share the same default IPspace and we are (understandably) seeing routing issues (asymmetric routing) when NFS clients outside the vFiler's vlan attempt to communicate with the vFiler. (these clients are the exception > 95% of clients are in the same routable net and don't have any issues) What are the opinions about adding new IPspaces vs just adding 5 static net routes to the shared routing table so routing works? thanks, Fletcher

Maybe a GUUID-like construct. Maybe the inum is some easily recognised subset of the bits. If you can find the inum and the filesystem it belongs to, the path might come from find(1) -inum
