Ack, sorry Garrett, I just noticed that you're running Samba 1.9.18p8 and I gave you a patch for Samba 2.0.3. I took a look at the Samba 1.9.18p10 source I had handy and it wasn't immediately clear to me what the correct patch is. Samba 1.9.18p10 uses a BUFFER_SIZE constant (defined as 0xFFFF) when calling Session Setup, but that constant is used in a *lot* more places than the CLI_BUFFER_SIZE constant in Samba 2.0.3, so I'm hesitant to fiddle with it. You're probably better off downloading 2.0.3 and applying that patch, since I'm sure that will get you a working smbclient. But if you want to stick with 1.9.18, you can give the following (untested!) patch a shot. (Let me know how it goes.) This way I know the file service is available) Hi Garrett, Yes, there is a problem with the filer's handling of Session Setup requests in 5.2 that prevents smbclient from connecting. What's happening is smbclient is trying to connect with a client buffer size of 0x4400, but 5.2 rejects any client using a buffer size greater than 0x2000. So, you can recompile smbclient with the CLI_BUFFER_SIZE constant set to 0x2000 to get an smbclient that can connect to 5.2. (See below for the patch.) With that patch, smbclient should work well enough for you to at least connect and fetch a file. (There could be other bugs, though... we haven't spent any time testing smbclient yet, on any release.) In 5.3 this client buffer size limitation has been removed, so that patch isn't required. Unfortunately, though, a bug was introduced in 5.3 that causes smbclient to get filenames that are short by one character (do a "dir" and you'll see what I mean). That shouldn't prevent you from connecting and fetching a file, though. This bug will be fixed in 5.3.2. (It only affects smbclient, by the way.) RE: Dump command issues?

Hi Mike, Officially NetApp doesn't support the ATL L200 or L500, but we do have a bunch of L200s in-house and we see different issues with them which normally results in a firmware upgrade from ATL. The latest upgrade is version 28 you may want to try this. FYI, the only "stackers" we officially support are the Quantum 4700 and Breece Hill Q2.15. We have had issues with timing on other tape stackers and have made recent changes to Data ONTAP that should cope with these variations, but we have no roadmap to "certify" a bunch more stackers. I know that 3rd party vendors have also been having some difficulty getting the L200/L500 units to work via NDMP without software changes. So if you are using a 3rd party tool which is NDMP-compliant or NOT then you may want to ask about their support (think patches) for these units. If you still have an issue after getting your unit upgraded/ checked out then feel free to send me an e-mail with your dump output and we'll see if we can get to the bottom of it. The problem with Microsoft's Migration Tool for NetWare is that you can only migrate data to a domain controller (the problem exists for NT member servers as well as filers), right? I have, however, performed a NW=>NT migration. We chose to do everything manually because the end result was much cleaner. We did use the Microsoft tool, but only to migrate user accounts. Migration problems

We are working on a migration project (Novell => NT) and want to transfer data from 3 Novell servers to a Netapp (F720) fileserver. Because of the different file systems, the right structure must also be transfered and translate. We tried to do this at the first time with a tool called Migration Tool for Netware. With this tool it is impossible to transfer the data from the Novell servers to the Netapp. Now we have the following question: - Does anyone already had a migration from Novell to a Netapp (or an other migration to a Netapp)? - Are there some tools to realise this? Macs & NFS

I just found that there is still one MacNFS client that is shipping. In an earlier post I had stated that there were no MacOS NFS clients available. Ascend bought Intercon which had published NFS/Share. It is now a part of IntragyAccess. I haven't seen it, but it might be an option for those of you who don't want to dedicate a UNIX server to reexport NFS shares via KA-Share, EtherShare, or netatalk. It's been some time since I've used this tool so curiosity got the best of me. I looked in one of the Microsoft NT4 training manuals and found the following tidbit: "The Windows NT Server Migration Tool for NetWare is used to migrate NetWare servers to computers running Windows NT Server. This tool transfers user and group accounts, login scripts, and files and directories form NetWare servers to Windows NT server domain controllers." It makes sense that the transfer of user accounts/groups and login scripts would fail but not the transfer of data only (even though it says otherwise). Were the attempted migrations of data only? What is the output of 'cifs sessions -s' after someone tries to access the share? Are the group assignments as expected? I know having local groups in share-level acls works, so I'm not sure what the problem is in your setup. One thing to check is that the local group is for the filer, not for the domain. Did you do "User->Select Domain" then enter "\\filername" in usrmgr before creating the local group? btw, if you are planning on sharing data in a multiprotocol way (i.e. with NFS users accessing the same data as NT users), you don't want to rely on share level acls to control access, since they are not used for NFS clients. Normally, in an NT environment the share level acls are left wide open and the access control is done via file-level acls. Let me know if you can't figure this out. Yes, there's a sample script (batch file) that can be scheduled with the AT service. The following is happening. Any ideas of what to do? 1. I have created a folder called test. 2. Within server manager I create a share for test. 3. Withing user manager I create a user called dude, a global group called dudes_global with several users, and a local group called dudes_local with several users. First I give one person (dude) permission to access test and everything works fine. I'm interested in seeing NetApp work closely with backup software vendors such as Arkeia to further NDMP support. Arkeia now supports backup of the Cobalt product line, including their (non exandable, small scale) RAID-1 NAS product. Currently we have a F720 filer and a ATL Powerstor L500 tape library attached locally. We are running into a issue when we try to dump to multiple tapes. If we use the command below, it is supposed to dump our entire vol0 (90GB of data) to multiple tapes in our tape library. rsh -l dump 0uf urst0a,urst0a /vol/vol0 Unfortunately, the dump command above backs up to the first tape, then rewinds the tape when it is full but never unloads it. When you place the drives from the "old" filer into the drive bays of the "new filer", I would suggest that you boot from floppy and make sure that the new filer can see all the drives. Since you are using a new "head" ... then you are also going to be using a new NVRAM card. The NVRAM actually puts an entry into the labels of the disks so that the disks know that this data belongs to this filer/NVRAM card. This is just in case there is any leftover data in the NVRAM card before shutdown ... When you boot, the filer will want to re-write the labels on the new drives placing the new NVRAM card signature onto the raid labels ... If you boot and all the drives are not seen, some of the labels will be re-written and some will not. You will then have mismatch raid labels and the machine will not boot (too many disks missing from the raid array) ... This may sound too simple but it seems as if there is no physical connection between the filer and the NT box. It doesn't really sound like a filer specific issue. Is it safe to assume that you're using the NetWare Migration Tool that ships with NT server and that the NT server has TCP/IP installed and configured? Is the filer licensed for CIFS and does it have a machine account in the domain? Can you see the filer from the NT server when NOT outside of the NWM Tool? Sorry for the list of questions. We have an F740 with three FC-AL shelves and 15 9GB disks. The shelves only have a single LRC. We are getting a new F740 and everything we need in order to setup the two F740's to do CF. The new shelves will have two LRCs as required for CF. In order to minimize downtime while we are upgrading our current shelves with a second LRC, we'd like to setup the new filer next to the current filer, then swap all of the disks from our current filer into the new shelves. I am assuming that if we do this, when we power up the new filer, it will assume the identity of our current filer. Then we can upgrade our current shelves at our leisure. Does this sound like it will work? Are there any compatibility issues between drives and shelves? Any other words of advice about upgrading to CF? Need help regarding quotas

We are currently migrating the home directories of 1200 users to our 740 (dot 5.2.1) All of our clients are either NT 4.0 (85%) or Win 95 (15%) and the filesystem on the netfiler is NT only. The quota file is configured as such: * user@/vol/uservol/users 100M #default Users Which should give everyone a 100Mb limit by default. Immediately after moving a user (with BackupExec-thus preserving the acl's) i run a program from TrustedSystems called reacle.exe that will allow me to force ownership of the files to the proper owner. All this said and done, the quotas are working correctly (no error messages) and are showing the users and thier limits. However, the actual file space accredited to the users is incorrect. It seems that only the files that they, themselves touch are assigned to them. I have users who i know are owners of more than 100Mb of files who, when the quota report is running, only appear to have 40K credited to them. Here is an example report for users who have more than 80Mb in their home directories. This really isn't a simple question. First, is the app running as a service, or is the machine left with a "user" logged on? I presume you are talking about the app running on an NT server... If the app is running as a user, the problem is trivial, put a net use command in that user's logon script. If the app is running as a service, (and nobody is logged on when it is running), the plot thickens. There is NO CLEAN answer that I know of. There are some NT registry hacks to run an application at startup. This app can be a script. Alternately, you can run a script from the windows AT command (or the easier WINAT, inf the resource kit). The main issue will be making sure the same "username" is running all of the processes, because of possible conflicts in permissions. Attached are a couple of clippings from TechNet, which MAY work. I haven't tried them. I'm a Student and working on a migration project. Now I have the following question: I want to migrate from Novell Netware 3.x to my Netapp (F720). I want to realise this with a programm called "Netware Migration tool (Nwconv). If I want to choose a Windows NT server and I select the Netapp (he is in a domain called D00) the programm comes back with the following problem: "cannot connect to server: The Network name cannot be found". I don't know if this is a problem on the Netapp (perhaps a services or something) or that I have to look somewhere else Greetings, Jan-Dirk
