If so, that isn't going to work by the specs for auto-negotiation. I think the designers of the protocol assumed if your nic (or switch port) was too old to support autonegotiation, then it was to old to support full duplex. So auto <--> half works and auto <--> auto works but auto <--> full won't by specification. That is my understanding, at least. If you are using a CISCO switch, this may be the cause. You have your media type set to auto. Netapp and Cisco do not negotiate well together. My suggestion would be to force the NIC to full duplex and force the port on the switch also. Also, i have never used 0.0.0.0 to specify "default" before. I am also curious as to what LinkNegotiation does? We've had the same problem as well with our F740s w/ 100BT. This problem with autonegotiation is neither particular to NetApp nor Cisco. We have SGIs, Suns, and HPs that also have had problems with autonegotiation, and I've heard from others having similar problems with other non-Cisco network devices. The problem is that the autonegotation standard in IEEE (Cl. 28 of IEEE 802.3u, based on NWay scheme) is a bit vague, which results in vendors implementing autonegotiation in such a way that it tends to be incompatible with how other vendors implement it. An unfortunate fact of life. I've got an Extreme Networks Black Diamond switch, and our F230 won't auto-negotiate 100-BT-fd with that either. Of course, neither will our Cisco 7507. Thanks for the backup help

Many thanks to all those who responded to my questions about backup. In summary it would seem that if I'm going to have 500GB filesystems then nothing hokey is going to cut it - I need something to either manage a locally attached bunch of tape drives and an autoloader. The only viable alternative seems to be either dumps across rmt (or rsh) or NDMP to a host with a large bunch of tape drives in a larger library. Our enterprise backup product doesn't support any of scenarios yet. I need something cheap and cheerful to manage this for me. The dumps to tape are only for a complete filesystem recovery, we would run snapmirror to keep the users going while rebuilding a broken box. File level stuff I'll handle through a CIFS mount on an NT box where our backup client will run. This leads to 2 questions 1) Which cheap and cheerful product to take care of the dumps and which of the ways above? Remember the dumps are only for volume recovery. 2) Has anyone worked out what the right way to failback after cutting over to a snap mirror replica? I understand netapp are working to make it easier but right now it looks close to unworkable with large volumes of data. If there are clever answers here then would anyone take the risk of not having a volume level dump? TIA, Al

My work around at the present time is to pull the gigabit cable out of the flier then putting it back on. This seems to "wake-up" the connection. Fastest way to remove files

Does anyone know of a fast, safe way of deleting a large qtree on a NetApp? Has anyone tried the rc_toggle_basic command "rm" from the console? Will it remove files recursively? Do they go into snapshots? Is it a "good thing(tm)" to do? Nfs or CIFS-problem

Hi, we're currantly experiencing some very annoying problems with our netapp, apparently it's having a hard time mapping cifs-accounts against the nis-accounts. The errors we get are the following: Sun Dec 12 08:18:32 CET [mountd]: yp_next: clnt_call: RPC: Timed out Sun Dec 12 19:02:55 CET [CIFSPasswordCache]: yp_next: clnt_call: RPC: Timed out Mon Dec 13 09:22:18 CET [rc]: CIFS terminated with 255 open files from 1167 CIFS users Mon Dec 13 09:24:23 CET [rc]: CIFS terminate aborted due to a hung CIFS I/O operation. Shutdown the system using halt -d and report this incident to NetApp Anybody know what the problem is? Saves using Legato ClientPak for Netapp

Howdy, Question for anyone out there using Legato's Netapp ClientPak. I have installed the client software on an F760 filer and trying to run some backup tests to see how this all works. I have created some test filesystems on the filer, and set a client entry on the Networker server. When I go to run the group that has the filer client, it starts up rather slowly, tell me it's starting to do a full save, then seems to just sit there for ages. I have about 10 savesets configured in the client setup, but the server appears to try to start only a couple savesets one at a time. It doesn't load any tapes, or any other activity. It appears to create the initial db entries, but no savesets start up. Incremental NDMPcopy problem

I'm trying to migrate a 100GB qtree between two filers using NDMPcopy. A full copy worked flawlessly, but I can't seem to get an incremental to work. The restore process keeps complaining that the "restore_symboltable" file doesn't exist, but restore should be creating that file, right? Non-ndmp issues should also be welcomed so that all backup/restores issues are discussed. An ndmp-tech(a)ndmp.org already exists for developers that wish to discuss the spec itself. RE: Backup solutions

We use NetBackup (currently 3.1.1, migrating to 3.2 early next year). We have been very pleased with the performance. Currently we backup through tape drives directly attached to the filers. However, we are in the process of setting up a backup lab where we can compare the feasibility of backing up over a dedicated trunk or GB network. Even if there is some sacrifice in performance the ability to use all drives in the tape library for all filers intrigues us... If I remember correctly, NBU 3.2 can do three way backups... We also use NBU for NT and UNIX backups... and will be testing AFS early next year. An enterprise wide solution was an important criteria for us... As many of you know, the debate between NAS and/or SAN rages on. I've been asked to create a website for the purpose of elucidating the theory and practice of each so administrators, such as yourselves, can make better guesses as to which one (or maybe a combo) would work best for them. Plus we'll hopefully be able to provide a searchable database of issues and answers from practical experience. Not in competition to this list, of course, but an additional resource. Maxfiles and available space

We're in the process of ordering another filer, this time with 36Gig disks. One think that we'd like to do is cut down on the filesystem overhead. Just out of curiousity, if we make maxfiles really small (say 50 per meg ) can we we get more available file space? Our current average filesize is ranges from 22k to 89k depending on the actual filesystem. How much space do netapps 'inodes' take? ----- Stephen C. I asked netscape to show me the cookies and when I login to now.netapp.com I see vanWebSupUsr= my 'Username' vanWebSupPwd= my 'Password' cookies, apparently in cleartext. The only other quick example I could check (hotmail.com) appears not to use cleartext for the username/password. Dunno if it's a big deal, but it does seem... odd.

WTB: FW 4.3GB disks for Netapp

I'm seeking some disks for our older filer. The drives I need are for the F210. They are FW SCSI-2 drives, Netapp model number was X217 4.3GB drive. Backup failures

We are using budtool 4.6.1 to backup our filers over the network. Joe. I'll give you a simple picture of the setup we're having at Ericsson In Stockholm serving 8000 users today. 6 F760 in cluster pairs all them primary owner of 750GB Disk 3 F760 Standalone Snapmirror replicas In total ~9TB of disk The're running in a mixed CIFS & UNIX Enviroment. We installed this setup in the begining ot the year and runned across a couple of bugs in the cifs implementation. But overall we're realy happy with what we're having and most important it's doing lots of good for the organisation using it. This is a few hints. - Clustering works great! Booth manual and automatic. - Snapmirror , i would not put my mirrors on the same heads. Fist of all i like to move the data to a different location. Putting the mirrors on the cluster heads make's the supported amount of data stored on each head go down ( Today thers is a 750 GB limit in cluster configs due to sharing NVRAM etc. ) It's realy fast to make a snapmirror head take the place of a destroyed cluster. With the standard trottle it's not taking to much power out of the heads. We are pointing the snapmirror traffic to "dedicated" NIC's on the heads so it does'nt interfear with client traffic. We take our backups from the snapmirror heads on a separat "Storage SAN" which gives us a larger backup window and does'nt effect the clients in any way. No snapshots, the mirrored volumes are read only. - Network balancing , today there is no failover/balancing support in my GB NIC's i keep 3 in every head. One for client access, one for fail over and one for snapmirroring. I heard there is going to be GB Ether Channel support, which would give failover/loadbalancing try to get an update from your sales rep. - WAFL , no problems snapshots makes it easy for the users to recover files them self. The raid is working good. snapshots saved us a coupple of times. - NFS I havent been across any problems with any NFS platform ( SUN, HP , IBM etc ) Just realy good NFS performance.
