If it detects parity inconsistency, the following events take place: - A message is logged to /etc/messages indicating that there is parity inconsistency. When you see this message, it is important to call Technical Support for help in determining the root cause of the problem. - Data ONTAP enables block checksums to ensure data integrity. When checksums are enabled, there is some performance degradation. If checksums are incorrect, Data ONTAP generates an error message similar to this one: Checksum mismatch on disk 4.0, block 436964 A file named /etc/crash/parity_inconsistencies is created. Until I looked into this last week, I was unaware this was possible and officially supported... I'm very enthusiastic about the possibility - so far, feedback on this has been generally positive. Quentin, We are also using Alexandria (although we wish we had something else) - We discovered that direct NFS mounts to the Alexandria server to the Netapps works best. We backup each top level directory and its associated sub directories and it seems to work fine. Log bugs if it doesn't work. 8) Remember to check all the settings on the clients: on the interfaces, the stack and the higher-level protocol as appropriate. Suns, by way of example, have oodles of things to set, as came up recently. The jury's still out on how much you can do on the client, but I'd say it's leaning toward 'quite a bit'. Also use whatever network tools you have, managed switches etc. to check for the usual problems with performance: collisions, duplex confusions, high broadcasts, other major traffic sources on the same or intervening segments. If you overlook something in this area then you might find tweaking the nfs.udp.xfersize is a retrograde change, against expectation. We are trying to backup 12 NetApp Filers using Alexandria. I was curious who else is trying to backup Filers with Alexandria and how they have implemented their solution. We have had a lot of troubles with doing Filer backups with Alexandria, especially with the Alexandria database. Greg, If you want to use NetBackup with NDMP to back up the filer, you need to have at least one direct attached tape drive connected to the filer(not considering a three way NDMP backup using two filers with a tape device direct connected to the remote filer). You can dedicate one or more drives from an existing library controlled by NetBackup, or you can attach a new/different library to the filer(yes, the filer does support a locally attached library). Either the NetBackup host (NDMP client) or the filer can be direct connected to the robotic portion of the library(assuming the library has individual scsi ports for the connection). In the end, NetBackup ends up controlling the library either way. If the robot is direct connected to the NetBackup host via scsi, NetBackup controls it. If the robot is connected to the filer via scsi, the NetBackup host sends scsi cdb's via NDMP to the robot through the filer, thus the robot is still controller by NetBackup. clearcase & network appliance

is anyone using clearcase with remote storage pools on the network appliance? i've had the experience of keeping the storage pools local to the servers in the past, but with the new group i'm working in, i'm in the process of using the remote storage idea. in terms of $$s, scalability, backup, etc. i see a big plus. what are some experiences of other individuals doing this? i don't have enough data or experience to fall back on to convince other groups we're working with of the idea. any insight would be helpful (even if i have to go back to local storage, grrr). charly

Configuring SNMP traps

Folks, We have two F760s in a cluster running ONTAP 5.3.4, and so far have configured SNMP on there to send traps to a "traphost". I wrote a Perl program that runs on the traphost as a daemon , which intercepts the traps and logs the data to a file. I am interested in having only certain MIB-II parameters sent to the traphost (e.g. cpuUpTime, cpuIdleTime, ...) on a periodic basis (e.g. 60 sec), rather than having the traphost directly query the NetApp periodically. Is it possible to configure the NetApp to do this? If so, how (please provide an example)? I've read through the sys. admin manual and man pages on SNMP, but they don't provide sufficient info. Backing up a filer

Hi all, I'm kind of new to the this filer business and I have a question about backing it up. We have an F720 on site that isn't doing much since we aren't backing it up. I need some options on how to do this. We currently back up our other systems vith Veritas Netbackup and a tape library. Now, my question(s) is if I want to use Veritas to back up the filer using NDMP, do I have to dedicate a drive on the remote tape library to the filer? Will the filer support a locally attached library, and if it does, does Veritas control the library or does the filer? Thanks for your help Greg

Chances are there was a problem with the syntax you were using. "cifs testdc" is a useful tool, but you'll need to shut down cifs before you test a different domain using it. CIFS and NTFS

Hello, I try to reconfigure our CIFS server to get NTFS features (ACLs). I've moved qtree security attribute from unix to mixed. But I still have two problems : 1) Do I need to put our CIFS server in an NT domain to use NTFS ACLS ? Our CIFS server is currently in a workgroup and is not seen by NT client as an NTFS server, but as a FAT server. 2) I tried to move the CIFS in our NT domain, and it failed. I get this message : Could not register CIFS group name DOMAIN: Another machine already has that name. There is no other machine with the same name in this DOMAIN, PDC and BDC are running and other servers (NT stations and SAMBA servers) register fine in the DOMAIN.
