Hi : We have a customer who is seriously considering purchasing a NetApp 740 from us and he wants to know if he can contact some folks who are using a Filer with SQL7.0 and what problems have been encountered. I was hoping that a few of the toasters group might be able to provide us with your references and experiences, as most of our customers are not using SQL7.0. We had a similar situation when we got our F720 - the original plan was to use it with SunLink Server, but it appeared that this system's emulation of a PDC was not perfect - IIRC, there was an issue with endian-ness of some transactions (1). Samba doesn't work yet either, but I suspect that it will at some stage in thr future. However, we had no option but to introduce a real NT Server as a PDC (although the accounts are set up on it under remote-control from the Unix box which contains the master user account database). Hidden commands

A few potentially useful hidden commands have been mentioned on this list recently. Namely rdfile - read a file wrfile - write a file pktt - packet trace Are there any others worth knowing about? Hi, I wanted to state that "wrfile" will blow away whatever file you are issuing it on as soon as you execute it. So please be careful. In the past we have used wrfile to add a line to like the /etc/rc file or /etc/hosts or whatever but to add that one line we have had to re-enter in all of the original data by hand and then add the new line we want since wrfile blows away the contents of the file. That is why Netapp does not endorse the use of the rc_toggle_basic commands unless we provide training on them like in the 101 or 202 clases, or under the guidance of the tech support or escalation groups. We are a primarily Unix environment and are placing a netapp in for a shared filesystem. We are told that the Samba PDC will not work to authenticate the filer in CIFS. Any opinions out there on what tape technology will dominate in the next year? Mammoth 2 is soon to be released, and promises to have better capacity and performance than DLT (7000/8000). Super DLT is supposedly coming this quarter, and will leap frog Mammoth 2. Any insights welcome. Sorry if this is off topic. Hi Bud, You might want to check out the following site. http://www.performancecomputing.com/features/9912sr.shtml It lists a variety of tape technologies and specs and when some of the new stuff is slated for release. As far as who will win the tape technology wars, I won't even pretend to know, but what I'm seeing out in the real world right now, is DLT7000/8000 and AIT-2. I personally think that Exabyte destroyed their credibility with the first version of Mammoth. It was something like three years late. They made announcements like every three months,for years. It's coming, it's coming. When it finally did show up, nobody gave a damn, because everyone had bought DLT by then. I know a lot of customer's are waiting for Quantum's SuperDLT due out at the end of this year, because they are already using DLT and have found the DLT7000 to be reliable, once Quantum improved their "dropped leader" problem. Sony's AIT-2, also has a good rep and is being made available in more of the various libraries. I think one of the real determining factors is the number of library vendors who choose to support the various tape technologies. Because of the massive growth in data, fewer sites are using stand-alone drives and more customers are choosing libraries with backup software to manage them. Right now the majority of library vendors I know about, all have at least DLT support and more are also starting to offer AIT-2. That is one factor in determining the future. Legato backup revisitted

Struggled though a barren period of no filers................but I'm about to get an F760! I've used these before, but this will be new to this company. At the same time we are considering a backup solution. Actually that's one of the main reasons I was able to get the filer in - snapshots and all that good stuff. The standard for our associated companies is Legato Networker. I've read through the threads from early last year - NDMP not yet, ACL's only via NT etc. etc. So, what is the latest? Would appreciate opinions on the following:- If I want to preserve NTFS permissions then should the Legato server be on NT? If so, Is Legato reliable/stable on NT? If it works and is a lot cheaper then OK, with have the people to run either. For information, will will be at ~ 750 G, probably 2/3 rds NT data, the rest an eclectic variety of unix(s) and linux. A good tool for Tech Support people (HP or NetApp) is a network trace of the transactions. This is especially good if you have one client who is working and one who is not. Taking a packet chase of each and comparing them tells Support people (and possible engineers) a lot of useful information. If you can't take traces from the client side (Solaris and SGI have snoop, HP I don't think ships one), you can always try pktt on the NetApp. This produces a TCP dump-format which some utilities can covert to other formats (snoop, sniffer, etc.). If you do decide to open a ticket with NetApp on this, getting some kind of packet trace will be very useful. A properly-done trace can tell us if the client is doing something that the server doesn't respond to properly, or if the client isn't generating a request or something else. Another bonus of getting this is it helps Engineers of any vendor figure out what's going on and possibly with reproduction efforts. NOW is using "style sheets," which set attributes for font, tables, body, etc. However, we've identified a problem with our style sheets and that why some folks are seeing black text on blue bars. HPUX 10.20 problems

We have a problem with HP-UX 10.20 clients. Occasionally they stop getting NFS updates from our NAC servers. For instance, you might create a file, but when you attempt do an "ls" on the file it does not appear. But if you log into another system and do an "ls" it is there. The only solution we have found is to reboot the HP. HP is no help. Their tech support continues it's downward spiral. At one point a few years ago we had the exact same problem with HP's and solved it by installing 4 or 5 patches. It was just dumb blind luck that I happened upon an HP tech who knew what he was doing. Now those patches are out of date, and the problem has popped up again. My hope is that someone on the list knows about this problem and can give me a list of patches they installed to fix it. Any input would be most appreciated. Thanks, Graham

The fix for 16022 is not yet available but it's coming very soon. You will also need a Release Candidate 3 or greater version of Windows 2000. It seems we can login to Samba v2.0.5a using Win2000 and cleartext password, but when using DOT 5.3.2R1P1D4 with unix authentication (no domain...), we see some login "traces" using "options cifs.trace_login", but the outcome is not good - we can't seem to login.... Do we need 5.3.4 ? Eyal/Motorola.

I wanted to let this list know that one of my groups priorities is removing javascript, frames and cookies from the NOW site. We heard from most of you that have terminals in colo cages and secure sites and started working on this issue. Your comments regarding pro-active notification are also being looked at as a new feature of the NOW site. In the interim, our Installed Base Group should be contacting your organization regarding contract renewal well before contract expiration. I can confirm the UNC part. However there are a few hurdles to take. To do scheduled backups you have to change the service account for nsrexecd on the networker server or storage node to an account with administrative rights on the filer domain.The reason for this is that scheduled backups are started by the nsrexecd service with the permissions of the local system account which are not sufficient for access to the filer. Therefor you must ensure that the service runs with another account. Alternatively a custom backup command can be used to mount the netapps volume on the backup the machine, but you will have add the "NET USE" command and enter the password in clear text in the command file. I am writing this mail message in hopes that someone else will benefit from it. I just found out this afternoon that the HW/SW support contract for our filers had expired on 12/31/1999. Hmmm, I assumed that someone would have contacted us before it expired instead of finding out while trying to download OS on the now.netapp website. To the Network Appliance Corp. readers; is there some way to find out when the support expires without contacting my sales rep? NDMP / Direct Attach performance on Filers

Hi Folks: Just curious what sort of performance numbers people seeing backing up their filers with NDMP and direct attached tape drives. Our setup has a pair of F740 with "FC" disks ( CFO too ) and direct attached DLT7000's. We're seeing ~6.2MB/sec using Budtool/NDMP. Alas, the reason I ask is a pair of our other filers, F520's with SCSI disks, are backing up over the network using Budtool ( and no NDMP ) and we're seeing ~5.7MB/sec All 4 filers have volumes that are ~100GB and we're running DOT 5.2.3D1 Thanks in advance. Hi Simon, You should open a call with NetApp support. However, before you do that, you might find it helpful to enable the "cifs.trace_login" option and watch the console when the new users try to access the filer - you should get some useful error messages. I suspect your problem is the Windows account names do not map to existing Unix UID/GID's. If you do need to speak to support, you would need to clarify exactly what you mean by "I cannot create CIFS shares for this domain". Connecting to Netapps via additional domains

Hi Guys! I am trying to set out F520 up to see users on an additional NT domain. We have a domani with a PDC that "TAP" sees OK. USers from this domain can login and access data on the filer. Then we have a second domain, with its own PDC, which has a trusting and trusted relationship with the first PDC. I am now trying to add a third domain to this complicated loop. This domain has trustings and trusted relationships with both the exiting PDC's but still users on this domain cannot see TAP. I cannot create CIFS shares for this domain either, which suggests that TAP cannot see the third PDC. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If the addition happens instantly it means the disks were pre-zeroed. If the disks are not pre-zeroed but support fast-zero, then the time taken will be much less than if they don't. As far as I am aware, none of the 4GB drives support fast-zero. The difference is significant - either in the region of 30 minutes (fast-zero) or anything up to several hours (depends on the filer they are attached to). When you initialise a filesystem, a 2-disk FS is created and all other disks are zeroed and configured as spares.
