Hello Eyal, thanks for sharing this, the annoying reported messages should well be fixed, once and for all, in Data OnTap 5.3.4 and up. If you are running that, and still see this error the shelf in question should be replaced. See bugs online for bug 16767: The SCSI-3 Environmental Services (SES) driver on occasion emits an erroneous overtemperature failure containing an impossible temperature. An overtemperature failure would normally be preceded by an overtemperature warning; the warning is not issued. The error is typically quickly reported as having been corrected. A typical report: Eurologic EDM shelf 5 on host adapter 8 reports a critical condition Digital Temperature Sensor Element 1 reports critical status overtemperature failure temperature: 217 (C), 422 (F) Sometime the temperature reported is very low rather than very high. It is very apparent that this fault should be ignored. A temperature reported so far above fault conditions cannot be reached in a ten second interval. WORKAROUND: There is no workaround. Examine the messages file to see if there are any persistent temperature reports. Constant faults would indicate the temperature sensor has reached a hard error state. In that case the shelf must be replaced. Each successive volume increment in SCSI disks seemed to about double capacity while only raising IO's/s by say 20% over each generation. As capacities grow this gradient mismatch between the two characteristics means data gets relatively less accessible per spindle. This is why *more* spindles are often recommended for high-performance/bandwidth requirements. So far so orthodox. It'd be nice to see what bus arbitration, RAID calculation overheads and fs-layout&maintenance take away by counterpoint due to such increased spindle-counts. If anything. My intuition is that spindles are a key factor in these algorithms, whereas larger linear arrays of sectors at each spindle are less significant. Any volunteers to argue either way? Recently I've been pleasantly surprised by the performance of Seagate/Sun 9GB disks - able to transfer 2-3x what old 4.5GB disks could, but then I suppose this is a generation or two further on and 4.5GB disks aren't really being produced. Fibre-channel product almost certainly gets highest-performance controllers, interfaces and firmware so maybe Tom and I do them a disservice by suspecting them of the same capacity-curve mismatch described above. Evidence about all this would be welcome. I'd bet we've almost all of us, at some point, bought at least one filer intended for heavy use (usenet, Oracle, etc.) and had to intuit how our disk-size, spindle-count and loop/chain-count decisions would impact our actual performance. Often this might even override questions of money (perish the thought!). If someone in NetApp engineering or testing hasn't had their own curiosity piqued by this vexed question yet and drawn up matrices describing the tradeoffs, or even shown convincingly that there are no real tradeoffs to be made, then perhaps someone might sound them out about it soon? win2k , WINS and serving CIFS

Hello, This is not entirely related to netapp but it somewhat is. Being a primarily unix environment, we have these two windows-nt boxes that really don't do much but act as WINS server so our clients can access the netapp filers. And that's how we serve CIFS. Not being a windows person, I like to ask what do we need to do with win2k coming to picture. Will a win2k client be able to access files via CIFS the way we do it now? Is that true that WINS service is history and no longer available? If so, how would we keep on giving CIFS service to our windows clients? Thanks, Farid

Four, you have to have drive IDs 3,4,11,12 in-place for FCAL shelf services to function properly. Actually no you can't - 56 * 36 = 2TB, which is not currently supported. You can have 42 * 36GB drives on an F760 (42 * 34.5GB formatted = 1.4TB). I don't believe there is any performance compromise here; there may possibly be a benefit in splitting the disks over two loops for particular access patterns (for example large sequential access), but I don't believe we have done any profiling of this yet. Is the maximum storage per fibre loop still 464.4GB? So I can not have 8 shelves full of 18 GB drives but I can have the following: 56 9 GB drives 28 18 GB drives 14 36 GB drives If so this sucks. The drives are improving but the total storage space is not increasing. When is this going to change? Jason

We had a similar situation when we got our F720 - the original plan was to use it with SunLink Server, but it appeared that this system's emulation of a PDC was not perfect - IIRC, there was an issue with endian-ness of some transactions (1). Samba doesn't work yet either, but I suspect that it will at some stage in thr future. However, we had no option but to introduce a real NT Server as a PDC (although the accounts are set up on it under remote-control from the Unix box which contains the master user account database). Hi, I wanted to state that "wrfile" will blow away whatever file you are issuing it on as soon as you execute it. So please be careful. In the past we have used wrfile to add a line to like the /etc/rc file or /etc/hosts or whatever but to add that one line we have had to re-enter in all of the original data by hand and then add the new line we want since wrfile blows away the contents of the file. That is why Netapp does not endorse the use of the rc_toggle_basic commands unless we provide training on them like in the 101 or 202 clases, or under the guidance of the tech support or escalation groups. Any opinions out there on what tape technology will dominate in the next year? Mammoth 2 is soon to be released, and promises to have better capacity and performance than DLT (7000/8000). Hi Bud, You might want to check out the following site. http://www.performancecomputing.com/features/9912sr.shtml It lists a variety of tape technologies and specs and when some of the new stuff is slated for release. As far as who will win the tape technology wars, I won't even pretend to know, but what I'm seeing out in the real world right now, is DLT7000/8000 and AIT-2. I personally think that Exabyte destroyed their credibility with the first version of Mammoth. It was something like three years late. They made announcements like every three months,for years. It's coming, it's coming. When it finally did show up, nobody gave a damn, because everyone had bought DLT by then. I know a lot of customer's are waiting for Quantum's SuperDLT due out at the end of this year, because they are already using DLT and have found the DLT7000 to be reliable, once Quantum improved their "dropped leader" problem. Sony's AIT-2, also has a good rep and is being made available in more of the various libraries. I think one of the real determining factors is the number of library vendors who choose to support the various tape technologies. Because of the massive growth in data, fewer sites are using stand-alone drives and more customers are choosing libraries with backup software to manage them. Right now the majority of library vendors I know about, all have at least DLT support and more are also starting to offer AIT-2. That is one factor in determining the future. Legato backup revisitted

Struggled though a barren period of no filers................but I'm about to get an F760! I've used these before, but this will be new to this company. At the same time we are considering a backup solution. Actually that's one of the main reasons I was able to get the filer in - snapshots and all that good stuff. The standard for our associated companies is Legato Networker. I've read through the threads from early last year - NDMP not yet, ACL's only via NT etc. etc. So, what is the latest? Would appreciate opinions on the following:- If I want to preserve NTFS permissions then should the Legato server be on NT? If so, Is Legato reliable/stable on NT? If it works and is a lot cheaper then OK, with have the people to run either. For information, will will be at ~ 750 G, probably 2/3 rds NT data, the rest an eclectic variety of unix(s) and linux. A good tool for Tech Support people (HP or NetApp) is a network trace of the transactions. This is especially good if you have one client who is working and one who is not. Taking a packet chase of each and comparing them tells Support people (and possible engineers) a lot of useful information. If you can't take traces from the client side (Solaris and SGI have snoop, HP I don't think ships one), you can always try pktt on the NetApp. This produces a TCP dump-format which some utilities can covert to other formats (snoop, sniffer, etc.). If you do decide to open a ticket with NetApp on this, getting some kind of packet trace will be very useful. A properly-done trace can tell us if the client is doing something that the server doesn't respond to properly, or if the client isn't generating a request or something else. Another bonus of getting this is it helps Engineers of any vendor figure out what's going on and possibly with reproduction efforts. NOW is using "style sheets," which set attributes for font, tables, body, etc. However, we've identified a problem with our style sheets and that why some folks are seeing black text on blue bars. HPUX 10.20 problems

We have a problem with HP-UX 10.20 clients. Occasionally they stop getting NFS updates from our NAC servers. For instance, you might create a file, but when you attempt do an "ls" on the file it does not appear. But if you log into another system and do an "ls" it is there. The only solution we have found is to reboot the HP. HP is no help. Their tech support continues it's downward spiral. At one point a few years ago we had the exact same problem with HP's and solved it by installing 4 or 5 patches. It was just dumb blind luck that I happened upon an HP tech who knew what he was doing. Now those patches are out of date, and the problem has popped up again. My hope is that someone on the list knows about this problem and can give me a list of patches they installed to fix it. Any input would be most appreciated. Thanks, Graham

The fix for 16022 is not yet available but it's coming very soon. You will also need a Release Candidate 3 or greater version of Windows 2000. It seems we can login to Samba v2.0.5a using Win2000 and cleartext password, but when using DOT 5.3.2R1P1D4 with unix authentication (no domain...), we see some login "traces" using "options cifs.trace_login", but the outcome is not good - we can't seem to login.... Do we need 5.3.4 ? Eyal/Motorola.

I wanted to let this list know that one of my groups priorities is removing javascript, frames and cookies from the NOW site. We heard from most of you that have terminals in colo cages and secure sites and started working on this issue. Your comments regarding pro-active notification are also being looked at as a new feature of the NOW site. In the interim, our Installed Base Group should be contacting your organization regarding contract renewal well before contract expiration. Make sure your Personal Profile is up to date in NOW so we can contact you. http://now.netapp.com/Self-Service/Custom/editProfile.asp We will have Javascript removed from the login page and will remove the javascript toolbar and frame by 2/24. So on 2/24 if you don't have javascript enabled you will be able to login and navigate the site. Moving away from cookies is a longer term goal because it is an infrastructure change- but we have it on the road map for the next 3-6 months. Additionally, we implemented an interim step that allowed for downloads... Customers who were previously unable to download software because of a text-only browser or browser that does not have Javascript or cookies enabled will now be able to download software through an alternative URL (http://download.netapp.com/). Here they will find the latest software releases and tools and will be able to download software quickly and easily. Here's how: 1) Go to http://download.netapp.com/ 2) Click on the 'Login' link 3) The next page will take you directly to the software download page.
