If it's okay to ask about more general issues on this list... I saw that netdrive.com is using Netapp for their online storage. I'm curious if people on this list see this as a big area in the future? Is B2C storage going to catch on with home users with thin clients? Are any of you considering B2B storage at the businesses where you work? Essentially, outsourcing your storage to a provider who gives you a storage line just like phone, electricity, or any other utility. Bruce

Neither OnTap or NetBackup support direct access restore in currently shipping releases. This is a complicated problem to solve in a dump-style backup. The only suggestion I can make to improve restore speed is to breakup the backup into smaller dumps. <color><param>0100,0100,0100</param>Opps . . . . I think I resent my origional message to the list by accident when I was trying to form this reply. If I did, sorry. I did a bunch of testing and found that I could resize a db files up to a maximum size of 1582940k. Up to that point I can resize the db file with no problem. Any attempt to resize a file past this point resulted in the error. Oracle 7.3 has a 2gb file limit so this didn't seem to be an oracle error. By just coping files I was able to create a file over 4gb in size, so the problem didn't seem to be a netapp/nfs problem. I decided to change some mount options. THe first things I tried was running nfs over tcp (I had been using udp). IT WORKED! After making the change I was able to resize the db file right up to Oracle's 2gb limit. Hi Kelly! We are currently using Veritas Netbackup v3.2 with NDMP Extension to backup our 4 Netapp F740. Two Filers have directly attached DLT7000 Drives and the other two are backed up via GBit - LAN with NDMP 3way Backup. (We also use Library Sharing for the the two NDMP-Masters). Throughput is about 15-20GB/h per DLT7000, and we are very pleased with that solution. Currently we are using Veritas Netbackup v3.2 with patch 326, Our Filers have Ontap 5.3.4R2. One Question because I´m new to Netbackup: -NDMP alternate client Restore: Restore Data backuped from Client A directly to Client B? Extending db file

Ok, I'm stumpted! I've brought an Oracle db (7.3.4.3) up on a RS/6k(aix432)/Netapp(534r2) system. The mounts are using nfs v3 and udp. All has gone really well except when I went to extend the size of some of the db files. When I do this I get the following messages: SVRMGR> ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE '/oracledata/orac/dbfiles/orac_gis_1.dbf' RESIZE 1600M; ORA-01237: cannot extend datafile 10 ORA-01110: data file 10: '/oracledata/orac/dbfiles/orac_gis_1.dbf' ORA-09967: sfsfs: unable to resize a file larger The db runs correctly. Oracle has permissions to, and can, create/delete files in this directory. The netapp filesystem isn't out of space - I can (as oracle) create large files in this dir. Snapshots are not using the space. There's no AIX error message. There's no error message in the Netapp messages file. In general . . . . I'm stumpted! Does anyone have any idea of what might be causing this? I highly suspect user error (me) but right now I'm blind as to what I may be doing wrong. RMA reminder calls

Has anyone else gotten just a little bit miffed at the frequency, speed, and pointlessness of the calls about NetApp RMAs? I get called in less than a week. shipped on 1-31, received on 2-1, reminder(actually more of a where is it, ya dead beat?) call on 2-2!, it is scheduled to be installed today and I don't want the broken box in office; it gets shipped when I have time. sometimes I'll get a call with a list of RMAs from the last 6 months and they expect me to respond with the whereabouts of every RMA when the fact is they have all been shipped back to NetApp. I have to schedule work to replace parts and it takes sometimes a week or more(usually less) and I don't want to have to deal with some extra middle man company to try to justify what I am doing with the RMA. New to Filers

I have a couple of basic questions:- 1) I cannot see the ~SNAPSHOT directory at the root of each share. The directory is certainly there, but it doesn't appear in the list. I'm using NT 4, IE5, SP6 and the "Show all Hidden Files" turned on. The manual says I should see it, but it isn't there. Am I missing something? 2) When a create shares I sometimes get the "Device or Directory cannot be found" but the directory exists. Should I be using the C:\stuff name or c:\vol\vol0\stuff? There isn't any disk space impact on the tape agent host (at least as far as I am aware). The NDMP server is just moving data from the network to the tape drive. Someone from NetApp would be a better source for what CPU resources would be needed. I understand that you can do NDMP dump across the network to a media server... it is even mentioned in technote 3066, section 4.3 (# 4 below): ---- The NDMP protocol specification allows the following backup configurations: 1. Local backup from a filer to a SCSI-attached tape device 2. Three-way backup from a filer via the network to another filer with a local tape device 3. Backup from a UNIX or Windows NT server via the network to a NetApp filer with a local tape device 4. Backup from a NetApp filer via the network to a UNIX or Windows NT backup server with a local tape device ---- We currently backup filers via dedicated directly attached tape drives (using Veritas NetBackup)... but, this is a costly solution because the tape drives are idle probably 75% of the time. We will be testing NDMP across a dedicated GB ethernet network in the near future. Even if we see some decrease in backup throughput, it will good if we can get those 20 dedicated DLT7000 tape drives in S'Tek 9710's doing more work for us... Not really NetApp related - just NFS related. I meant to send this note out a long time ago. One thing the IETF would like is "user" review of Internet drafts. The working group is moving towards a Proposed Standard over the next few months, which includes review by a wider audience of the standard. You don't have to be an "IETF member" or attend "IETF mtgs" to review. If you're interested, take a look at the latest draft. It is the culmination of a lot of work originally by Sun in the form of a strawman proposal, and later one of our engineers, an engineer from HCL, Sun engineers to form the current specification. This one has been reviewed extensively by the far flung working group - mostly through the e-mail alias. Comments to the working group alias are best. NetBackup does not support backing up NDMP hosts to NetBackup media server tape drives. Since you have more than one filer, I would recommend selecting a subset to have locally attached drives (possibly part of a shared library). Then use 3-way NDMP to backup filers without drives. Greg, The comments in my earlier email with regards to VERITAS NetBackup, NDMP and filers remains correct. Technote 3066 (#4 below) works as long as the NDMP compliant third party backup software supports it. VERITAS NetBackup does not currently (to the best of my knowledge) support performing an NDMP backup from a filer with data going to the Solaris or NT backup server with locally attached tape devices. Call me on 408-822-3308 if there are any questions, or you want to discuss this further. A recent Network Appliance press release details plans to address the idle tape drive issue. It is well understood that direct attached, dedicated tape devices sit idle most of the time. If the robot is connected to the filer via scsi, the NetBackup host sends scsi cdb's via NDMP to the robot through the filer, thus the robot is still controller by NetBackup. Bummer... I just tried a backup from a filer to the master's locally attached drive and got an errro 154 -- storage unit characteristics mismatched to request. This is w/ NetBackup 3.1.1, and from reading my NBU 3.2 manuals, it does not look like this will work (because the sun is not an "NDMP host" and I have not seen in the doc how to make it one). Problems dumping onto 2 tapes using F500 and Adic DLT4000

I have recently begun to require 2 tapes for my backups. However, if I load the tapes into the slots in my DLT4000 (which sysconfig tells me is a FastStor DLT & mt -f rst0a status gives me Digial DLT4000) and do a "dump 0uf urst0a,urst0a /vol/vol0" it appears to work (dumping tape 1 then dumping tape 2) but when i try to restore (with the t option) i find it hasn't touched the second tape at all, but has overwritten the tape 1 with tape 2 data. Yeah, the disks are understandable, and many of the rest are not really broken parts but rather attempts by NTAP to troubleshoot a particular problem (hardware, software, or external). I find the power supply and fan assembly problems to be very bizarre, and guess you are either cursed or don't have the controlled enviornment you think you have. As to the EOL issues, I agree; NTAP should not EOL products as quickly as they do. I would like to see 4+ years going forward. Of course, as a shareholder, I realize this will cut into earnings. Pipe trouble

I'm having trouble creating a named pipe on a filesystem mounted from a 760 to a Linux system. The 760 is running 5.3.4R3. 'mknod <name> p' gives me a zero-length file rather than a named pipe: # mknod initctl p # ls -la initctl -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Feb 8 15:58 initctl ^ I'm sure this *used* to work (way back when I had a 540). It works fine if I try it on a filesystem mounted from a Linux server... Any ideas? -Ronan

RMA stuff

Humm.. I'm still kinda new to netapps. Just had to get replacement SIMMS since we had faulty ones on one of our F330's. I like how they send 2 boxes, each with 2 sticks of SIMMS in them. The boxes are 8"x14"x2" or so. A little overkill, but they're not the only ones guilty of that. My question is - when I have had problems with SUN equipment, they send a packet that has tons of info for returning the defective product including a UPS shipping sticker packed with a replacement part. With these 2 boxes of SIMMS, there was absolutely no paperwork - just an RMA tag on each box.
