I would suspect, as most tape libraries do, you can get the info from the LCD console of the library, something like FW info? Graphing write volume?

I have installed filer-mrtg, which has almost all the information I need. The only thing I need now is to know how much bandwidth would be needed to mirror our 740 across a wan link. Since it should it is a mirror we should only need to know the amount of nfs writes. Also in filer-mrtg the Network K sent/recv seems really really low. It is showing us at 5.2KB/s? But when I graph something like 1:public@netapp I get about 30Mbps, Big difference. I tried to graph mib number ...789.1.3.1.3.1.1.34.1 but that gives me a 0. Ideas? --Brian

Hi, I finally received a new F760 filer but failed to realize that the built-in tape interface will be differential. All of my current filers have dedicated ADIC 224 libraries with DLT7000 fast/wide tape drives. Q: I need to be able to connect the new F760 to the existing tape library. Does anyone know if there is a host adapter (fast/wide) that I can plug into the F760? If not, then my second thought was a passive differential to single-ended adapter. Does anyone have any experience with that? The backup software is NetBackup. It's kind of a fuzzy distinction, since you are trying to satisfy a diverse set of applications, but in general, EPERM ("Operation not permitted") is used to bounce attempts to do things that don't work because you're not the right UID/GID, whereas EACCESS ("Permission denied") is used when the object in question does not grant you access. In the case of NTFS qtrees, I think you could argue it either way, but to me it feels more like you're the "wrong user" than "this object denies access". We have plans to allow users from UNIX clients to manage NT ACLs on the filer, which would allow you to see what is going on in cases like this. In the meantime, now that the Samba team has published the necessary DCE/RPC info to do this*, there's nothing stopping some enterprising third party from providing such a command. I would have expected a different error message (EACCES rather than EPERM), but it appears that chown(2) and utimes(2) may interpret those very strictly, and assume that EPERM must mean that you are not the owner if you're not root, rather than simply being denied write access. They don't seem to consider the possibility of being denied write access even when the times argument is non-NULL. Still, wouldn't it be more appropriate for the filer to return NFS[3]ERR_ACCES instead of NFS[3]ERR_PERM in those situations? Bruce

There is a bug in their firmware that prevents a filer running 5.3 and later from booting. The Q47 firmware in question is version 4.41. Hi all, Recently we have procured a Filer 720. We are facing a strange problem. Though I am the owner of a file or directory When i try to change the ownership of the file or directory or if i try to copy the file to some other directory. I'd take a quess that the file is on a qtree (or volume) with NTFS security. Thu Mar 2 13:36:35 EST [adm1-na7: isp2100_main]: Loop back up on ISP2100 in slot 3. Rename a qtree?

Can you rename a qtree? I tried this: - from the mount point for /vol/vol0 I did a "mv qtreedir newqtreedir" - edited /vol/vol0/etc/quotas to change the quota entry to reflect the new name: newqtreedir - edited /vol/vol0/etc/exports to change the exported dir to newqtreedir - resized quota for vol0 - rexported everything - at the host unmounted/deleted the nfs mount - added a new mount using newqtreedir It looks like it works. On the hosts a df command shows the quota correctly. Question: Is this really messing things up or is this ok? As a previous post again showed, I need more cache in my environment (amount of NVRAM seems sufficient). The F740 has 1/2 GB, no more, no less. A write-intensive development environment is apparently not the optimally-tuned "typical" configuration that NetApp uses to configure their one-size-fits-all filers. Perhaps in the future NetApp could be a bit more flexible in the configurations available, and maybe offer "professional services" to monitor and tune a filer for a specific application. I'd just hate to reinvent the wheel if someone's done it already. I also don't know anything about the buffers in the filer, on FCAL interfaces, the network interfaces, the precise use of the WAFL, etc.. So my model might be under-informed. Here's a thought to mull over: if you have 20 18 gig drives on 2 loops and 16MB nvram, will you see better or worse performance than with 40 9GB drives on 1 loop with 16MB nvram presuming your clients are all writing as fast as they are allowed? Please disregard any "such configs aren't shipped" objections as this is an in-principle hypothetical. Please do consider the effect of RAID sets, and incremental disk-additions over the lifetime of the filer in question. I picked writing as the task because I wanted to point out also that there's an impact on the DOT algorithms, based on the spindles, the RAID set sizes, and maybe the chains too. I don't know the answer, but I'd like to. Without such models we all have to purchase filers somewhat in the dark, and either pray that we got it right, or expend more time than we could in evaluating our purchases for suitability. legato java client

Hi all, we have a F740 with 534R3 and I just installed legato's netapp client ( patch 5.5 ) . ( Filer has not been rebootet after the legato-installation.) na_nsrexecd -s *nt-legato-server* start shows the daemon is running, rsh-option is on; but I get the following messages, when starting the clients group on the nsr-server: NetWorker: ASM donesave failed. NetWorker: save: Error java.io.IOException: save failed java.io.IOException: save failed at COM.legato.networker.cmd.Save.savepaths(Save.java:336) at COM.legato.networker.cmd.Save.save(Save.java:108) Does anyone has any suggestions ? I did just try and check to make sure the needed fix got rolled into Data ONTAP 5.3.5 also, which you should be able to obtain from NOW, but the system we have for letting me do that doesn't appear to be available to me right now. If any user from the unix system gives the command quota -v. he gets lists of all the users who are owning the files in the home directory. But the disk usage is of my home directory. Site Server and netapp

Hi, Does anyone have any experience using Site Server as a front end to pages on a Netapp. When we update the pages on the Netapp the clients still seem to get the cached copies. Are there any settings on the Netapp that should be set (oplocks?) or is this more likely a Site Server issue only. Thanks, Jay

This may be a fruitless search for info but i'm interested in hearing about how folks are handling disk usage stats on large quantities of data (say 2 or more TB). Of particular interest to me are environments where there are lots and lots of small files rather than a modest amount of large ones. Knowing that the network wire is usually the bottleneck, we are running our du's from an admin host on the same isolated 100 bt server network as our 6 filers. But- because of a known incompatibility between the network card on our admin host and the Bay switch we're using, the card can only sucessfully do half-duplex, not full. Due to a lack of other suitable hosts to run these reports from, I now turn my attention to this list for some collective brainstorming. Thanks, Derek Kelly
