Spurious "Loop break detected" message?

I noticed this on one of our F740's in the weekly e-mail: Thu Mar 2 13:36:35 EST [adm1-na7: isp2100_main]: Loop break detected on ISP2100 in slot 3. Thu Mar 2 13:36:35 EST [adm1-na7: isp2100_main]: Loop back up on ISP2100 in slot 3. There were no noticeable problems around that time, nor were any other messages reported. adm1-na7 is clustered with adm1-na8, both are running "NetApp Release 5.3.4: Fri Oct 15 12:28:26 PDT 1999". The FC-AL adapter in slot 3 is connected to adm1-na7's partner's drives though, which is probably why nothing bad happened. Rename a qtree?

Can you rename a qtree? I tried this: - from the mount point for /vol/vol0 I did a "mv qtreedir newqtreedir" - edited /vol/vol0/etc/quotas to change the quota entry to reflect the new name: newqtreedir - edited /vol/vol0/etc/exports to change the exported dir to newqtreedir - resized quota for vol0 - rexported everything - at the host unmounted/deleted the nfs mount - added a new mount using newqtreedir It looks like it works. On the hosts a df command shows the quota correctly. Question: Is this really messing things up or is this ok? Perhaps in the future NetApp could be a bit more flexible in the configurations available, and maybe offer "professional services" to monitor and tune a filer for a specific application. I'd just hate to reinvent the wheel if someone's done it already. I also don't know anything about the buffers in the filer, on FCAL interfaces, the network interfaces, the precise use of the WAFL, etc.. So my model might be under-informed. Here's a thought to mull over: if you have 20 18 gig drives on 2 loops and 16MB nvram, will you see better or worse performance than with 40 9GB drives on 1 loop with 16MB nvram presuming your clients are all writing as fast as they are allowed? Please disregard any "such configs aren't shipped" objections as this is an in-principle hypothetical. Please do consider the effect of RAID sets, and incremental disk-additions over the lifetime of the filer in question. I picked writing as the task because I wanted to point out also that there's an impact on the DOT algorithms, based on the spindles, the RAID set sizes, and maybe the chains too. I don't know the answer, but I'd like to. Without such models we all have to purchase filers somewhat in the dark, and either pray that we got it right, or expend more time than we could in evaluating our purchases for suitability. legato java client

Hi all, we have a F740 with 534R3 and I just installed legato's netapp client ( patch 5.5 ) . ( Filer has not been rebootet after the legato-installation.) na_nsrexecd -s *nt-legato-server* start shows the daemon is running, rsh-option is on; but I get the following messages, when starting the clients group on the nsr-server: NetWorker: ASM donesave failed. NetWorker: save: Error java.io.IOException: save failed java.io.IOException: save failed at COM.legato.networker.cmd.Save.savepaths(Save.java:336) at COM.legato.networker.cmd.Save.save(Save.java:108) Does anyone has any suggestions ? The issue was a little involved, and only ever occured when an app started using change notify like it was going out of fashion, but the engineering team here chased it down and it's all solved. I did just try and check to make sure the needed fix got rolled into Data ONTAP 5.3.5 also, which you should be able to obtain from NOW, but the system we have for letting me do that doesn't appear to be available to me right now. User viewing quota

Hi all, We have set the quotas for all the users in the /vol/vol0/home. If any user from the unix system gives the command quota -v. he gets lists of all the users who are owning the files in the home directory. But the disk usage is of my home directory. Site Server and netapp

Hi, Does anyone have any experience using Site Server as a front end to pages on a Netapp. When we update the pages on the Netapp the clients still seem to get the cached copies. Are there any settings on the Netapp that should be set (oplocks?) or is this more likely a Site Server issue only. Thanks, Jay

Running du's

This may be a fruitless search for info but i'm interested in hearing about how folks are handling disk usage stats on large quantities of data (say 2 or more TB). Of particular interest to me are environments where there are lots and lots of small files rather than a modest amount of large ones. Knowing that the network wire is usually the bottleneck, we are running our du's from an admin host on the same isolated 100 bt server network as our 6 filers. But- because of a known incompatibility between the network card on our admin host and the Bay switch we're using, the card can only sucessfully do half-duplex, not full. Due to a lack of other suitable hosts to run these reports from, I now turn my attention to this list for some collective brainstorming. Thanks, Derek Kelly

Max disk limit on F740?

You don't have to set a rediculously high quota limit to track disk and file usage you can use a dash (-) in the /etc/quotas file for any item that you wish to track without imposing a quota limit. Then run quota report to see the disk/file usage for all users that you wanted to track. Thus you would end up with a line in your quotas file like this: #target type disk files * users - - which will track disk and file usage for all users w/o worry about imposing a quota on them. Yes, and since quota report counts all files on that quota tree (or volume), it doesn't necessarily give you the information you're after. For instance, if you want to move a directory tree from one quota tree (or volume) to another, you have to run du to know its size. The problem remains, as far as I know. Concerned about quick EOL for 9 gig drives

Hello all... we're in the final stages of purchasing a NetApp F740 to host our Sybase (or Oracle, eventually) database on. The device will be populated with 18 gigabyte drives, to balance # spindles with total storage capabilities. At the moment, the 36 gigabyte drives don't look to be appropriate to our needs or cost-effective. However, I'm concerned at the relative speed with which the 9 gigabyte drives were EOL'd and then became unavailable for sale. Is there a scheduled time-frame for EOL on the 18 gigabyte drives? Should I specify 36 gigabyte drives, just to be safe and have a reasonable time frame for continued acquisition of the same type of drive? Thomas P.S. Howdy- If it is any comfort to you, NetApp knows about this problem (and can reproduce it in their lab). Bug 13364 was opened for me on 3-10-99 for this exact problem. I've pretty much given up on getting this mostly cosmetic problem fixed (though perhaps I should celebrate it's anniversary), so we tell people to use the magic of grep. Respectfully, David N. If you set options cifs.home_dir /home in you /etc/rc file, each user should be able to map directly to their account. This is what we are doing and it works very well. Makes it nicer for the user and much simpler to administer and a real NT server. From the man page on options: cifs.home_dir When set to the pathname of a directory, this defines the path to the ``homes directory''. The directories under this path should have the names of users as their names. When a user connects to the filer using CIFS and there is a directory name that exactly matches the user's lower-cased Windows login name, they will see a share of that name (truncated to 12 characters) that is their ``home directory". Only the user can access the home directory using this share. All other users cannot see the share name since they are logged in under a different user. You can set an option called the CIFS Auto Home Share. Bhaskar, Yes, you can share the user directories separately. It can be done from the console prompt, FilerView or from the Windows NT Server Manager. This can be a bit hard to manage and decrease throughput if you have a lot of users, though. The problem is that every inode in a qtree has a qtree id in it. You'd have to update the contents of the inode, adjusting the id and updating quotas. Of course, that would be faster (in most cases) than actually copying the data for all files. I'm sure there are other issues, such as the fact that any NFS filehandles referring to the old qtree would be stale, but it's an idea that keeps coming up so I've submitted an RFE for this: 22411. Yep; the way we used to do it: (a) lock the VOB, (b) copy over the non-storage-pool VOB stuff to the filer [so you've got all the VOB stuff in "one place"]; (c) snapshot; (d) unlock the VOB; (e) take a copy of the snapshot at your leisure; (f) delete the snapshot.
