V-Series question

All, I was wondering if anyone has any data or experience running a V-Series appliance in front of a DDN SFA-10K array. I understand that this configuration is totally unsupported (and there appears to be a significant amount of bad blood between DDN and NetApp), but I'm sure *someone* has tried it. Thanks, that drove me into the right direction – I was under the assumption, that some basic components are missing or failing here because I wasn’t even able to run it on the command line – my bad. I did now add –report and –reportdir to the script file which gets executed by VSC and am getting reports now, still not working but that’s because I’m using a private subnet for mounting the datastores which is not accessible from the VC server and am now playing with options (-svip, -noping, etc.). Will see how it goes, if it still doesn’t work, I’ll get back to you ☺ Thanks again for the hints! Experience with sv-smvi?

Hey, does anyone have experience with the sv-smvi script which can be used to support SnapVault in VSC Backups? I'm having some troubles with getting it running at all, no matter what I do, it always just exits with return code 0, even when I use the -verbose or -debug switches, it also does not write report files. Even if I'm giving it wrong user/password combinations, it still only exits with return code 0 and that's about it then. Ready-only folder troubles with MAC OSX Clients on a NetApp CIFS Share

Hey there, I'm having a strange problem with a freshly deployed FAS2240 (8.1.2P3). Some OSX Clients (iMacs, Macbooks, etc.) are having troubles to write files to the CIFS shares on that filer. The share itself looks like this: VOLUME /vol/CIFS_SHARES/VOLUME ... access based enum supported ... client side caching disabled NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users / Full Control > qtree status Volume Tree Style Oplocks Status -------- -------- ----- -------- --------- CIFS_SHARES ntfs enabled normal CIFS_SHARES VOLUME ntfs enabled normal File permissions on the root of the share look like that: [cid:image001.png@01CE45E7.10730B60] Except for the "Authenticated Users" entry, all other groups do have "Full Control" Permissions on that share (at the root of the share). At the root level of this share, there are several folders which do have permission inheritance disabled, i.e.: \\netapp\VOLUME\DepartmentA<file:///\\netapp\VOLUME\DepartmentA> \\netapp\VOLUME\DepartmentB<file:///\\netapp\VOLUME\DepartmentB> ... On each of these subfolders, the permissions look like that: [cid:image002.png@01CE45E7.CDEE9510] So the SYSTEM group as well as some custom active directory groups do have Full Control on this folder and all of its subfolders. The users in question are part of one of these groups (in that specific case, part of the group "Creative Services") and can map the share and see it (which they cannot for other shares where they are not member of the respecitve groups, so ABE is working as it should). Anyhow, no matter what I do, at all of these DepartmentX folders, I do see the read-only item grey-checked and cannot remove that, no matter what I do: [cid:image003.png@01CE45E7.CDEE9510] That does not seem to be a problem at all for all the Microsoft Windows clients, they can work and store files without issues - but the OSX clients seem to have problems for whatever reason. The error message they are getting when trying to store a file in one of the folders there is (translated, the client is running in local language here): Adobe Photoshop Couldn't save file "xyz.psd" because no write access has been granted. I'm thankful for any ideas you guys might have - maybe I'm missing just a small thing here in my setup. cf_config_check gone?

Does anyone know what happened to the cf_config_check tool on now.netapp.com? It's referenced in a bunch of places, but it's not there any more. I've spinning up a new 3220 cluster running 8.1.2 (anything I need to watch out for?) and I'd like to make sure I've got a good setup. Thanks, John

Protection Manager: Ignore unprotected Volumes/Qtrees

Hello All, I would like to use DFM (OnCommand Core) to track any unprotected Volumes/Qtrees in my NetApp environment. The menu 'Unprotected Data --> Resources' in Protection Manager shows me a list with all unprotected Qtrees but unfortunately, I do not know how to customize this list. I would like to ignore a) Volumes that we do not save at all and b) all non-qtree data, because we always use Qtrees. Is there a way to customize the list in Protection Manager or does somebody know a completely different solution, that could meet my needs? Thanks in advance. Regards, Pascal

All, does anyone know exactly how autosupport goes about to extract the extra "secret" info from 'environment status'? Cannot delete directories in mixed mode qtree

One of our home directory directories was inadvertently set to mixed mode and now I'm having problems deleting sub-dirs from it. Many of the directories appear to be empty both on the NFS and CIFS side yet ls shows them containing more than 4k but even the ones that are 4k do not let me delete them. It's not every directory (I've been able to delete ~500) but the ones remaining I cannot get rid of either as root on the NFS side or with Domain Admin rights. One last interesting thing is that if I try to force change the rights it says the path is \\host\UserDirectorynane (missing the \ before Directoryname) in the Windows UI. Kind of scary, I've never seen this before. I would not be terribly surprised if there was not some file system corruption here, there where a LOT of files in this directory and it's children at one point. slow giveback protocol transit time

I realise that giveback times depend on various factors including configuration and load. Generally our giveback protocol transit times have been at most 30 seconds. We recently gave back one Filer with neither controller under load and no obvious configuration changes and the protocol transit time for CIFS and NFS was approximately 70 seconds. FA2240 & Solaris (Sparc) Multipathing not working.

For the past 2 years I've been accessing LUNs on our FAS3240 from a Solaris Sparc host (Solaris 10 Update 9) using FCP. There are two QLA2340 cards on the Solaris host. Each is cabled to a separate brocade switches, creating 4 paths to the same LUN. Solaris multipathing was enabled when the Solaris host was created (stmsboot -e) I created the igroup on the FAS3240 with ALUA enabled. FAS3240B> version NetApp Release 8.0.2P6 7-Mode: Fri Jan 27 14:48:08 PST 2012 This all worked creating for lack of a better term, a single virtual path to represent the 4 physical paths on the Solaris system. Example: /dev/rdsk/c13t60A98000646762364634634B7847616Cd0s2 -> ../../devices/scsi_vhci/ssd@g60a98000646762364634634b7847616c:c,raw We recently purchased a FAS2240 with a single PCM for additional space with the optional mezzanine card with dual FC ports. Since it's a single controller when I create an igroup it's without ALUA. The problem. When I create a LUN on the FAS2240, the Solaris host is showing two separate paths to the same LUN rather than a single path. Auto-export configuration.

Greetings, I have some NearStores that I have upgraded to 8.1.2P3. I've found that since I've upgraded, when I create a new file system the auto-creation of the export string has changed. It is now incorrect and all the new exports are invalid. It isn't using what any of the others are using and it isn't tied into the vol0 export either. Where or how do I change what is uses for default export string when a new volume is created? Reassigning vlan-interface to a vfiler

Hi guys, I’m stuck with reassigning a different vlan-interface to an existing vfiler. What I did: - I created a new vlan interface vif1-123 - I downed the interface e0b-666, which was assigned to the vfiler’s ipspace and removed the ip by setting it to 0.0.0.0 - I reassigned vif1-123 to the vfiler’s ipspace - I reassigned the e0b-666 interface to the default ipspace - I brought vif1-123 up with the vfiler’s ip address using ifconfig - I stopped and started the vfiler Now the vfiler has the correct interface and ip address, but the default route still points to the old interface: | Routing tables | | Internet: | Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Interface | default 172.17.113.66 UGS 0 1757931 e0b-666 | 172.17.113.64/26 link#23 UC 0 0 vif1-123 | foo.customer1 0:50:56:b9:1b:5c UHL 1 3 vif1-123 | bar.customer1 link#23 UHL 1 0 vif1-123 ifconfig on the host filer tells me, that the ip adress is correctly bound to vif1-123, nevertheless inside the vfiler this seems to have no effect regarding the default route. SIS metadata issue

We noticed several volumes used for VM datastores were showing decreasing sis savings. When we checked there was a significant amount of space being consumed by the sis metadata. Netapp told us this is due to bug 657692 which is likely to be fixed in 8.1.2P4. The bug mentions "Following certain sequence of operations, this metadata can become stale". The issue we have is the workaround is to run a "sis status -s" on each volume. When this is running it gradually removes the metadata which then causes the snapshots to increase rapidly. This means we can't automate the process as we need to kick it off and then increase the volume, snap reserve or remove snapshots. head swap of Fabric Metro-Cluster?

Hi, Does anyone have experience doing a head swap of a FMC, from 6080 heads to 6290 heads? And hints beyond what's already in the "Upgrading a FAS60xx system in an HA pair to a FAS62xx system in an HA pair" document? Is there any reason why you can't do this, during a HA pair upgrade, to limit service downtime: - doing a failover of node 1 to node 2. - shut down and replace the hardware of node 1. - shutting down node 2. - bring up the now-replaced node 1, reassign disks, and takeover node 2 on the new node 1. - replacing the node 2 hardware - doing a giveback on node 1 to node 2. -- Jan-Pieter Cornet "Most seasonal greetings are sent by spammers and phishers."

Just migrated some volumes to a 3250 8.1.2 cluster and as expected when the snapmirrors were broken, the 64-bit upgrades began. How do I tell from the command line the progress and ETA of the 64-bit conversion status? I suspect they are causing IO issues - what is the diagnostic value of the per disk (high) latency reports with ~40% disk util? Looking in Perf Advisor, it was during an extremely short, sharp latency spike that impacted every volume on every aggregate at exact the same time. It was the fourth of four spikes that had happened a few minutes apart during the previous 20 mins. It looks like the NVRAM flush got stuck somehow but I have no idea what would cause that. We're running ONTAP 8.0.2 7-mode on a very busy FAS3170. Thanks, Peta

Just noticed 8.2RC1 is available for download - anyone testing it out yet? From the release notes, it sounds like they are changing the licensing scheme The notes also say to use upgrade advisor, yet ironically UA does not have 8.2 as available as an option. Looking to get the bug fixes for issues in 8.1 thanks
