Creating a RAID

Hello: The filer in question is an inherited box, an F760 with two shelves of 9GB SCSI drives, one shelf of 9GB FC-AL drives all in one RAID and one VOL. The single VOL also contains the root, I think. I've heard that you are supposed to separate SCSI and FC-AL drives into separate RAID groups, but this is how the box came and we can't change it. Anyway, my task is to add two shelves of 36GB drives to this unit. I know I need to create a separate RAID group for the 36GB drives. In the man pages I see instructions for adding disks to an existing volume and how to create a volume. I don't see anything that tells me how to create a new RAID group. Alan, I have installed and config'd Service Guard a few times. The data disks are shared between systems with an exclusive "lock" which guarantees that only 1 node can access the shared disks at a time. The locking mechanism is LVM based. Specifically, only certified HP disks support the locking. Since the Netapps is an NFS Server, it is outside the scope of LVM and would not play well in a SG environment. NFS locks are 'advisory' - my process hopes your process adheres to pre-extablished rules. Netapps has cluster configs which allow for redundancy of the filer and its DASD. This alone would be redundancy of DASD, where SG attempts to eliminate ALL single points of failure. Another potential issue. NFS clients (HP-UX included) are not usually happy when the NFS server hangs, panics,... I worked on a SG environment where each node in the cluster was both a NFS client and NFS server to the other nodes. This sort of became a nightmare to implement. HP has an NFS Toolkit for Service Guard which supports ONLY an NFS server, not the client. On the other hand (the non-supported hand ;>) ), if you configured SG properly, the adoptive node (adopting the application during failover) would do an NFS mount to the filer and be able to access the data, if it were not corrupted. If you do decide to go ahead with this unsupported environment, I would be very interested in hearing the results. Hi, I was using Postmark to measure NFS performance in Solaris <-> NetApp configuration. Very good tool, I think. http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3022.html http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/postmark.html I even ported it to Windows NT :) But, I think there should be something more Windows-native. I just want to measure remote disk performance, NFS or CIFS connected. NetBench seems to be to compicated... Any suggestions? Thank you.

NetApp and HP MC Service Guard

I have a project involving four HP systems requiring continuous availability. I would like to use MC Service Guard but I am not sure if I can use this software with a NetApp. Is anyone using this failover software in a NetApp / HP environment? I would also be curious of other methods of high availability from the server side with a NetApp? Thanks Alan

Server capacity and performance

Hello, I am running into a problem where I am getting NFS not responding errors from our f740 (512M ram, 32M nvram). After the error pops up it is immediatly available again, but performance is getting really bad on our filer. My question is does the amout of disk space used effect filer performance substantially? Yesterday we got to 96% full (2x18G shelves). I trimmed it down as much as possible, but am still seeing horrible performance. I have ordered a new 36G shelf, but that may be a few weeks away and I would like to find a stop gap solution. Could my performance problems be related to space, or are they probably just sheer volume of ops problems. TIA, --Brian

What version are you running? You may be hitting the issue described in bug 21019. If so, you need to get a version that supports the cifs.perm_check_ro_del_ok option (probably 5.3.4R3P2 or 5.3.5P2). The issue here is that some customers consider it a bug to allow a read-only file to be deleted, since that violates NT delete semantics, while others (like yourself) consider it to be a bug not to obey UNIX delete semantics (i.e. you just need w-x in the parent). The option was introduced to allow this behavior to be customized. We are looking into ways of improving the NIS implementation to be more efficient. We are not planning on implementing the slave functionality on the filer though. HP-UX R11 L2000 / F740 NFS Performance

Has anyone tried maximizing file loading performance in the above environment. I will be installing the F740 with 18 - 36GB drives soon and want to solve the problem before it exists. 2-3K usually. The total number of OPS has not increased very much, it seems like writes are taking forever. We're using 5.3.4R3. I'll be interested in hearing about your cautionary note regarding the usage of full disks or not. I'm pretty sure it's okay, though, because striping requires a parity drive and each RAID has its own parity drive. I don't see how WAFL can stripe across several RAIDs and properly maintain parity. I fully agree. Having experience with administering Auspex servers as well as NetApps, as well as administering a large, complex NIS environment, it would be a pity to start adding more overhead to the NetApp outside of what it was originally intended for (i.e. fileservice). The Auspex was was a pain to manage because its lack of simplicity, and I didn't see the dedication to fileservice that NetApp provides. As of 5.3.4 (?), NetApp provides the nis.servers option, where you can list all the possible NIS servers to bind to. This has worked quite well in our environment, esp. in the face of a failure of an NIS server the filer was bound to. Adding more overhead to the filer, such as NIS slave service, will only complexify the NetApp more, and as Jeff alluded to, bring it more into the Auspex realm (IMHO, this would only hurt NetApp). Jeff/Bruce, Your input is very valuable. We will take into account your suggestion while we improve the NIS services on the filer for the next release. Jeff - instead of binding using broadcast, you can secify the NIS servers you want to bind to in the order of preference. Although recent enhancements to the NIS client have made it speedier and more robust, loss of communications with a NIS slave has consistently been one of our largest causes for NetApp services outages. Additionally, binding several NetApps to the same slave places tremendous strain on that slave due to continual hammering by the filers. A lightweight slave implementation inside DOT would be a welcome feature. As Bruce mentioned, it need not provide maps to other machines, but only for its own purposes. This would reduce network traffic and strain on existing boxes, free up an external dependency, and likely improve the speed of authentication which may make the filer run faster overall. As a side-note, our old Auspex ran a NIS slave for the same basic reason although it was horrible for machines to bind to. ndmpcopy problem (long)

I had a need to transfer transfer a large amount of data between two filers, one running OnTAP 5.3.4 and one running OnTAP 5.3.4R2. I ran a level 0 ndmpcopy the day before the cutover, and then a level 1 the night of the cutover, in order to minimize downtime. However, after doing a compare of file sizes after the transfer, I found that some files which had been modified since the level 0 did not have the proper size on the destination. Here is an example. Toaster1 is the source, and toaster2 is the destination. Do you have NIS for netgroup lookup in your /etc/nsswitch.conf file?
