raid failure

I have heard a few horror stories lately about netapps and multi-disk raid failures. Has anyone out there experienced this and what did you do for recovery ? Where there any warnings? I have not had this happen and would like to do as much as possible to prevent it. I understand *now* that this has been acknowledged as an ONTAP bug. That was not the case (or VERITAS support did not know that) when I opened my case two weeks ago. I have email from my case owner that 5.3.4R2 is currently being tested. That is where that came from. My point in going to an unqualified release as a concern is that I have been stuck in the middle in the past. If I proceed to a version of ONTAP and backups break, then downgrading to fix backups is not necessarily a pretty thing to do. I guess my biggest concern is... if backups can break, so can restores... I have been backing up filers with NetBackup and NDMP for almost two years. I have seen a lot of the good, the bad and the ugly :-). I tend to be cautious as a result. Perhaps I should not have said "in a supported mode" but rather, in a "known working configuration". In general, backups are still working. We run a script every three hours that ups the drives, and any backups suspended by a downed drive pick up and proceed. And I agree... testing every version of ONTAP would be impossible. When VERITAS identifies an OnTap release as qualified, it means that we have done a level of testing within VERITAS to suggest to us that the release meets the minimum standards for use with NetBackup for NDMP. We have drives down several times a day. My updrives script runs every three hours. Starting last night, here is what the script did: 6PM Up-ping drive 0,1,8,9 9PM Up-ping drive 0,1,8,9 12AM Up-ping drive 0,1,2,6,9 3AM Up-ping drive 0,1,6,9 6AM Up-ping drive 0,1,6,8,9 All we have to do is up the drive & backups proceed properly. It seems like the downing of the drive is triggered by and end of job or need for a second tape. Keep in mind that VERITAS currently has no plans to qualify any 5.3.5 release. If you are concerned about keeping NetBackup and ONTAP in a supported mode you need to be at 5.3.4 (qualified). We also have the same problem with this release of Ontap and Netbackup v3.2. According to Netapp the cause of this problem is a faulty Java Class (Garbage collection) which NDMP uses. This should also be the reason for the problems with Ontap 5.3.5xxx, where the problem got critical and backup stopped working. At the moment we run 5.3.4R3P2 and have only the problem with with DOWNING Drives (irregular, about 1-2 times a week). It looks like netapp has problems with Ontap Releases gretaer than 5.3.4R2. The last 3 months we used Ontap 5.3.4R2 without any problems. The switch to Ontap 5.3.5P2 (note that netapp and veritas promised us it will work) was a disaster! After switching to the new version everything looked fine. But after about 5 hours the drives went down and setting them up was impossible. Error Message: Apr 29 00:49:17 viws111 avrd[17817]: fatal error on device 3 (ndmp_connect_open_and_auth), ndmp_result = -5, DOWN'ing it. (messages on Netbackup Master) After that and some calls by veritas and netapp we downgraded to Ontap 5.3.4R3P2 and only(!) have the downing drives problem. Netapp then recommended us to switch to Ontap 5.3.5R2P1 and promised us to have that NDMP Bug fixed. By our next shutdown we would have switched to that version of Ontap. But now it looks like we will stay on 5.3.4x so long as we can afford it. I use my Filer for mostly NFS access, and some CIFS access. People are starting to buy Windows 2000, which won't work in my setting because we don't have an NT domain (everything lives in a workgroup). Has anyone had any bad experiences with 5.3.5R2 ? -corris

But we've had the motherboard swapped out by NetApp and we have the exact same error messages. Does anyone out there have this configuration? I just don't understand what we could be doing that is so different from the people that have this drive and the engineers who have "tested" it. F740 with HP ServiceGuard

Does anyone have any experience of integrating filers into an HP ServiceGuard configuration. I have two F740's in different locations and SnapMirror between them, I am planning a three node ServiceGuard cluster and want two of the nodes to talk to each of the filers. If a node fails I want one other node to take control, if a filer fails I want the other filer to provide data to the users. If the filer fails out of hours I do not want to have to come in to make the mirror writeable and repoint all the clients to the mirror filer! (I much prefer to sleep:) ) Any ideas would be gratefully received. This is supposedly the third tape drive from our vendor (but at least the second I'm sure about) and we have tried internal and external termination (with more than one external terminator). We have sent the drive back to the vendor multiple times and they have tested it and sent it back with us getting the same results. The current drive was sent to us directly from a NetApp engineer (she got it from our vendor) who tested it successfully on a F760. We don't have another system we could test it on ourselves. That restriction exists to enforce share level ACLs. However, we do have plans to allow such symlinks securely. Unfortunately, I can't give you info on when. Hi Amy, I suspect someone has already told you this, so forgive me if this is a repeat. But have you been told that the AIT 2 drive needs to emulate an AIT 1 drive in order to work? In the next major release of software the AIT 2 will be supported, but right the only way it will work is for it to pretend to be an AIT1. Do 'mt -f rst0a status' - this will create the file /etc/cloned_tapes Edit the cloned_tapes file to map the product ID, ie. by adding a line that says something like: SONY SDX-510C EMULATES SONY SDX-500 (I'm not sure about this syntex, because I'm not sure the exact inquiry string that the drive returns, so please check with netapp support) then: Do 'mt -f rst0a status' again. Any way for CIFS to see symlinks across qtrees/shares?

Is there any way to set the Filer to allow symbolic links to traverse other qtrees? I have a symlink on one CIFS share, which is a qtree, that points to a directory on another CIFS share, which is another qtree. Obviously, this works fine for NFS clients, but the CIFS clients just see the symlink as a regular file, not as a directory. Thanks, Tim

F720 & Sony SDX-510C

We have a F720 that we purchased in February with a Sony SDX-510C (AIT-2) that has never functioned properly (we have managed to get ONE tape backup of our system). We have been in contact with many NetApp engineers and they have yet to solve our problem. DUMP: Retry the open?: ("yes" or "no") no DUMP: DUMP IS ABORTED We have tried AIT-1 tapes as well, in addition to swapping out the motherboard (really!), changing dip switch settings, changing tape drives, different cables and different SCSI terminator (internal setting and external blocks). One of the NetApp engineers tested the drive on a F760 and she says it worked fine. They all swear this tape drive will work on our system with the dump command. Any ideas or help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks! Amy

Yes, NFS Maestro is working great with NetApp. The permissions issue we had was that in order to authenticate, the <filer>/etc/passwd file must have a name _and_ a passwd in order to authenticate. We were trying to authenticate without a password Thus, I added a user and passwd to the passwd file. There's a handy-dandy utility on the NetApp to output passwd encryption, but I can't seem to remember what that utility is. This sounds like bug 7836. It's fixed in 5.3.4 and later releases. It isn't currently available on NOW, but I'll take care of that. Filer WINS registrations

Hi all - We've got two filers, a 330 and 540 both running 5.1.2P2, in a Windows NT domain. The filers are configured to register with WINS. However, we've noticed some unusual WINS entries in the last few days. The filer is correctly registering a 00h workstation entry, a 03h messenger entry, and a 20h file server entry into the WINS server. The big problem is that the filer is also creating 00h, 03h, and 20h WINS records for the domain it is in. It then appears that there is a workstation with the same name as the domain. This causes numerous problems for Windows clients on the different subnets in the different buildings. Most of the problems are the inability to find the domain controller, or a duplicate name error. (We've noticed a weird bug with Windows 2000 and WINS where the computer doesn't release the workstation record when it shuts down, but we're not sure if they're related.) I called NetApp, and they referenced a duplicate WINS name problem in bug # 16355. I can't find that bug number on the NOW web site. NetApp support suggested upgrading to 5.3.4R3, or even 5.3.5R2. Anyone seen this bug, or similar behavior? Can someone take a look at their WINS server, and let me know what's in there from the filer? Or what is the output of a cifs testdc?
