One thing that SnapMirror can do, that NDMPcopy and rsync won't do is, not show the changes until the entire SnapMirror operation is complete. With NDMPcopy and rsync, as each changed file is copied, the change is seen immediately on the destination, whereas with SnapMirror, the changes are all made at once. Depending on the type of data and the schedule of sync'ing, this may or may not be desirable. Who has experiences with software distribution/syncronisation over WANs with NDMPcopy or SnapMirror? We have a software pool at our master site, where we maintain our software (~ 500 GB) and then we distribute the changes to our client sites. Our actual rcp/ssh-based solution has several drawbacks: * No automatic syncronisation * Transfer of whole sw-packages only * Only Unix-packages supported (no NT packages) My idea is to do this job with NDMPcopy or SnapMirror, but I have a lot of questions: Can I export (ro) the mirrored volumes? (NDMP, SnapMirror) It´s possible to tunnel NDMP/SnapMirror with ssh? Can I mirror more than one site with SnapMirror? Cascaded distribution? Wiping and setting up a system.

I would like to destroy all volumes on an F330 (with four shelves, fully populated with 4Gb disks), and then create a single new root volume and install 5.3.5R2 (which *does* run on an F330). I'm sure I can destroy the existing volumes (I'm good at destroying things), but it's not clear to me how to then install Ontap onto bare metal (I've only ever upgraded a filer before). Neato quickie way. Get to an OK prompt (via halt or Ctrl_C in RAM count) Enter: setenv floppy-boot? true reboot It will as if you want to floppy boot when it locates drives..enter a y or an n..if you dont..it'll just sit there forever.*** You get your 5 item menu, enter on re-init drives choice. At completion, it will walk thru a full setup session like new. Now halt filer. Enter: unsetenv floppy-boot?*** (dont forget..or reboots will sit forever if you dont catch it) reboot All done. Save you what feels like ages in booting from floppy. So we use a F760 for compiling our software....it's a demanding environment, and up until now, NetApp systems have been adequate for us As I've been refining our build process though, I've continuing optimizing it to the point the 760 may become our bottleneck. The "root"-option is more secure, but this setting has one big drawback: You cannot use netgroup names with the -root option and you can specify only 256 host names! If you have only few machines, the -root option is the better choice. In large server farms with more than 256 machines that are running CDE+dtlogin (XDMCP) the -root option will not work. SQL Server 7 with data files on toaster?

Hi - Another request for success or horror stories; does anyone on the list have experience with running MS SQL Server 7 using a toaster to store the data (as described in http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3042.html and http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3044.html)? One possibility being looked at here is to run a database from something like a Dell PowerEdge 8450 with the data files on an F720 or F740. I'm aware of the advantages the toaster will bring in relation to backup, snapshots etc, but I'm interested in how the performance of such a setup would compare to, say, attaching a big LVD or Fibre RAID5 directly to the server. Any comments? Hello *, I think it´s a problem with the permissions on your home directory. The dtlogin process (CDE) reads and writes configuration files in the homedirectory (~/.dtlogin/..). The owner of the process is root --> But root has not permissions on mounted directories! Try out to export your homedirecties with the "anon=0"-flag in /etc/exports -or- you should open your homedirectories for everybody (chmod 777 homedir) :-(( to avoid this problem. Hi Jason, This configuration is planned to FCS on the F760 (and possibly the F740) in early June. The configuration will be tightly managed and sold by our tape library partners, ATL & Spectra Logic. This is currently being tested by NetApp, ATL, Spectra Logic, Legato & Veritas using Data Ontap 5.3.6 (expected FCS 5/26/00). We are working with our partners to get all the relevant docs available on our perspective web sites in this timeframe too. My questions to Netapp are: 1) Is this possible? Yes, with a limited configuration, ATL P1000 or Spectra Logic 10000F and Vixel 8100 (with NAS firmware). 2) How would the Netapp log into the switch? As a Loop or Fabric? The NAS firmware in the 8100 provides "Loop Emulation" so each filer sees FC-AL and believes it has a locally attached tape library. 3) What is the solution for backing up a Netapp directly to Fibre tape drives? NDMP-compliant applications such as Legato BudTool & Veritas NetBackup are being certified. However, rsh dumps via cron will still be supported. 4) What is supported? Hi Jason, Yep we do, with a few differences. The solution that has been tested and certified is as follows. NetApp filer Vixel 8100 switch ( with special NAS firmware) Veritas or Legato software Spectralogic or ATL libraries The press release announcing this can be found at www.netapp.com/news/press/news_rel_20000202.html also if you check the Spectralogic web site and the Vixel web site they have more information. We also have the same problem with this release of Ontap and Netbackup v3.2. According to Netapp the cause of this problem is a faulty Java Class (Garbage collection) which NDMP uses. This should also be the reason for the problems with Ontap 5.3.5xxx, where the problem got critical and backup stopped working. Netapp recommended us to switch to Ontap 5.3.5R2P1, where the NDMP-BUG is (hopefully) fixed. regards, Klaus Micheler Infineon Technologies DC

Has anyone successfully mixed FC8s and FC9s on the same FCAL loop? We currently have four FC8s connected to our F740, one FC8 not connected (no drives in it), and two FC9s just arrived (we ordered FC8s, but tech said that they'll co-exist just fine). The instructions indicate that when you connect one FC9 to an existing loop containing FC8s, you have to make it ID-0. What about the second one? (I'm assuming that we just make it ID-1, but the documentation isn't clear.) I'll probably just price what NetApp would charge to just upgrade your existing FC8s to FC9s. I'd rather have a homogeneous set of shelves, honestly. Also, I heard a nasty rumor that the F740 actually maxes out at 7 trays worth of (18Gig) disks.
