Kelsey, Recently i migrated data (over 110GB) from F520 to F760. With a gig card insatlled in both the systems, we acheived 35GB per hour by using vol copy command. I am not sure about F230 taking a gig card. Alternately, you could use cpio for data transfer from any unix host. Its very efficient. I am acheiving 7GB per hour on regular network. In the common case of very small daily changes, rsync is one magnitude faster than rdist for replicating from one filer to another. (If lots of files change every day, the actual data transfer time will probably dominate, and the difference will not be that great.) Of course, SnapMirror is probably one magnitude faster than any replication using intermediate NFS clients such as rsync, as has other advantages as well... --tml

Oracle and NTAP.

Ok, so we've been contemplating using one of our 760's for Oracle storage. Discussions with Netapp people made me feel relatively warm and fuzzy about doing this but discussions with our DBA consultants didn't. Specifically they mentioned a situation they had experienced while testing a netapp/oracle environment which would cause total corruption and require restoration from backup. The specific situation is a case where the filer loses power but the DB server doesn't. Their claim is that if this occurs there is no method to recover the DB other than from backup. Anyone had any experience with Oracle/Netapp or this specific situation? We plan to test this in the next few days, but I wanted to get any insights you all might have. Thanks, -Brian

Time Navigator for NDMP backup

Does anyone have any experience with Time Navigator for backing up NetApps? I only just heard about the software yesterday, but they appear to support NDMP (clients for Solaris, AIX, Linux and NetApps). The company, Quadratec (www.quadratec-software.com), is only just entering into the North American market but they've been in the European market for awhile now. OnTAP version?? this is what we got from netapp that helped us Take the 4th hex number and convert it to decimal. F720 & AIT-2 tape drive

For all of you who graciously helped me with suggestions, I thought I'd write back with the results of our problem with our new F720 and the AIT-2 (Sony SDX-510C) tape drive so that everyone could benefit from our experience. The final justification from a NetApp engineer for why the AIT-2 drive would not work with our filer was due to insufficient cache on the F720's processor. Although we actually got a few complete backups using that tape drive, subsequent dumps would always fail until we got to the point (months later) that the filer itself would time out while talking to the tape drive at the beginning of a dump. We bought the filer February 2 and we got a DLT7000 tape drive on Monday, May 22, and now our problem is (supposedly) solved. We have had no problems with the DLT7000 so far (although it has less capacity -- and it's only been two days :-) ). We never tried the AIT-2 tape drive with any third party backup software. File-specific NDMP backups?

Folks, Another clueless-newbie question, as is my wont: I've got NetBackup 3.1.1GA running against a 740 filer with 5.2.1.P2. When I attempt an ndmp backup of a directory a few layers down in a /vol, it fails. Backups of the /vol itself work fine. /vol/brs1/prod/brs-data1/ger1 -- fails /vol/brs1 -- succeeds Is this an inherent limitation of ndmp at this rev level? NFS problems between Tru64 UNIX and F760's (5.3.5)

We've been seeing alot of 'NFS3 server servername not responding still trying' followed by 'NFS3 server servername ok' messages. Alot of them. It's relaly only on our DEC hardware running Digital UNIX 4.0d. Has anyone seen this before and found a fix? It's starting to affect our performance, especially trying to put some database files on them. Interaction of /etc/hosts.equiv and telnet.hosts option

I've just spent some time trying to work out why I couldn't rsh to our F740 from some newly installed machines even though I had added them to /etc/hosts.equiv. It turns out, apparently, that the option telnet.hosts list gets into the act: if the rsh'ing host isn't in the telnet.hosts list, then it gets a prompt rejection, and nothing is logged in /etc/messages; if it gets past that, then /etc/hosts.equiv is checked for host and (possibly implied) userid, and if *this* check fails then a "[rshd_0]: Permission denied to rsh request from ... at ..." is logged to /etc/messages. This is with 5.3.5. Has it always been like this? I could have sworn not, but the two lists have been in step here for a long time, so I could be wrong. There's nothing in the hosts.equiv(5), rshd(8), or options(1) man pages to suggest that telnet.hosts affects anything except telnet, or that rsh'ing is affected by anything except /etc/hosts.equiv. It also seems to me very counter-intuitive, and quite inconvenient because the telnet.hosts list is restricted to so few elements. We also use OmniBack II to back up our F630 and F760, and I agree that it is inefficient across NFS and does not preserve ACL's. Netapp discusses several alternatives that use NDMP (Workstation Solutions "Quick Restore", Veritas and Legato). Though just as inefficient, an NT backup software would preserve the ACL's, though I don't know whether the restored data would have any unix permissions from a mixed qtree or not. ADSM has also been mentioned by some on this board. The documentation can be found likewise, in an online "Changes to the System Administrator's Guide" for things that didn't make it into the Systems Administrator's Guide. The justification for the change was to provide more consistent access control (and "trusted.hosts" is an alias for "telnet.hosts", to help transition to the new meaning of the option). One thing that SnapMirror can do, that NDMPcopy and rsync won't do is, not show the changes until the entire SnapMirror operation is complete. With NDMPcopy and rsync, as each changed file is copied, the change is seen immediately on the destination, whereas with SnapMirror, the changes are all made at once. Depending on the type of data and the schedule of sync'ing, this may or may not be desirable. Who has experiences with software distribution/syncronisation over WANs with NDMPcopy or SnapMirror? We have a software pool at our master site, where we maintain our software (~ 500 GB) and then we distribute the changes to our client sites. Our actual rcp/ssh-based solution has several drawbacks: * No automatic syncronisation * Transfer of whole sw-packages only * Only Unix-packages supported (no NT packages) My idea is to do this job with NDMPcopy or SnapMirror, but I have a lot of questions: Can I export (ro) the mirrored volumes? (NDMP, SnapMirror) It´s possible to tunnel NDMP/SnapMirror with ssh? Can I mirror more than one site with SnapMirror? Cascaded distribution? I would like to destroy all volumes on an F330 (with four shelves, fully populated with 4Gb disks), and then create a single new root volume and install 5.3.5R2 (which *does* run on an F330). I'm sure I can destroy the existing volumes (I'm good at destroying things), but it's not clear to me how to then install Ontap onto bare metal (I've only ever upgraded a filer before).
