So there shouldn't be any problems with HP ShureStore DLT Autoloader 818 with Single-ended SCSI-2 fast/wide high density because for Filer I only found fast wide diferential. Is that compatible?

Great question Cliff. I have a similar situation where I am moving data from one filer to another and would very much like not to have to reboot. Secondly this data is exported and automounted by most of our workstations. I'd like to find a way to have the workstations give up the old mounts and mount the new ones without rebooting the workstations. Automount -v on the workstations does not release the old mount points. Any ideas? McAfee's Ghost

Since moving the storage of Ghost images to the Filer, creating images has gone from .5 hours to just about 6 hours. I use a boot disk created from the network client program on Windows NT's administration tools. Does anyone else have this problem? Thanks, Ferdie Mazon

Unix group permissiosn and NT access on a filer

Please forgive any NT terminology mangling, I'm a Unix person: We've got a filer that is set up as a Unix filesystem (as opposed to multiprotocol.) Our NT users access their home directories as NT shares on this filer. Their NT login names match their Unix user id's. On the unix side, I created a group and made a group-writeable directory that is not readable to others. When the NT users log into our unix machine, they can write files in this directory. When they access this directory from the Unix side, only the owner can write files. Is this fixable? Without making dramatic changes to the filer? Creating a volume offline

I've looked through the docs, and I can't find how to create a volume so that it will be offline when created. I'm needing this to move some data from one set of disks on a filer to another using vol copy (where the target needs to be offline). And since this particular filer currently contains some database files and our common executable repository, I'm loathe to reboot it just to take a volume offline. Is there a way of displaying a message, when telneting to the toaster, before entering (username),password? On solaris this can be fixed in at least two ways. The reason for this question is that apparently there is no legal way of punishing someone who breaks into the computer if there isn´t a sign that says that it is illegal to enter. ----- Mats

Hi Uros, The F700 series will support the DLT8000 in an emulation mode, if your DLT drive is an HVD model, not LVD or SE. That's on the hardware side. On the software side, the DLT8000 will not be supported until the next release of software, so you will have to emulate a DLT7000 until then. You do that by creating an entry in the /etc/cloned_tapes file, that says DLT8000 EMULATES DLT7000 Be aware that the DLT8000 will now act like a DLT7000, so you will only get the same speed and capacity of a 7000, not the 8000. Bug 21837 did not require a change to Legato. The change was completely in OnTap. The question was semantics ctime is the inode change time. [i.e. changes associated with the inode should update the ctime field.] The access time is also part of the inode. Therefore in the strict sense of things, ctime should be updated when the access time is updated. However, backup programs are the only ones likely to explicitly change access time and for those types of applications updating the inode change time doesn't make much sense. Backup programs usually try to set all the times explicitly. UK Customs problems

We just received some replacement LRC cards for our FC8 shelves, but I've had endless conversations with Federal Express about VAT. Apparently because they are new parts, UK Customs require VAT to be paid on them (Universities can't generally reclaim VAT). The fact that they are warranty replacements seems to make no difference. I'm trying to get our reseller to sort this out but it would be really helpful if Netapp could do someting with the paperwork to avoid this in the future when they ship replacement parts to us. I believe that Matt's problem is different from bug ID 21837. 21837 was identified during investigation of a Legato Networker problem where ctime was being updated inappropriately. The net effect of this was that files that hadn't changed were being processed as if they had. I believe that Matt's problem is the opposite; files that have changed are not being picked up by NDMP incremental dumps. Matt's problem is currently being investigated. FYI: the resolution for Bug ID 21837 required a change to Networker as well as Data OnTap. That is correct. It is true NetApp recommends using NetApp's dump and restore command formats. ufsrestore is also supported as an alternative way to retrieve data in case filer is unavailable. Hi All, We recently turned on NDMP on our filer and have noticed different behavior with incremental backups. If we level 0 a qtree, then use Solaris ufsdump piped to the NetApp restore command to move files from a Solaris box to that qtree (such that the file attributes like ctime and mtime are older than the level 0 time), a subsequent level 9 dump will not see the added files. If we turn off NDMP on the filer, so BudTool's dump.NetApp class reverts to rsh'ing a Ontap "dump" command, then that DOES pick up the added files. We opened a call with NetApp (110424), they claimed to have made "incremental backups with NDMP available" in 5.3.5R2P2 which we upgraded to, but we are still seeing the same behavior. Not that serious a question, but we just got a new F720 and was wondering why the Fibre card has the funky connector on it, but the filer and the trays have a 9-pin connector? I would think as much as the box was idiot-proofed they would of at least used a different connector for the shelves then from the serial devices.... Anyone know? Hints: be sure to turn on snmp with "snmp init 1" turn traps on with "snmp traps on" set the traphost with "snmp traphost add <host>" Notes: traps were introduced in 5.3 you have to get stuff right on the Openview end too If these don't solve your problem, please open a call with NetApp support. using openview to receive traps from a 740 filer

Is anyone using Openview to receive traps from a 740 filer? We have installed the MIB file into Openview on a Sun box and added several snmp traps to the /etc/rc file on the filer. If we pull a power supply a trap should be sent to Openview for translation and then send a page informing me of a problem. We are not seeing any traps from the filer but Netapps said this should work. If you have in input on our problem please send me a message.
