When the drive is DOWN in volume manager (using "vmoprcmd -d" to see state and "vmoprcmd -down N" to mark drive N as down), you can use robtest (which invokes tldtest). From the description it doesn't sound like a problem with robot control. It sounds like a drive problem. F720 Maximum Disk Configuration

Does anyone have a 720 with 14 36GB disks (total 504GB)? Are than any performance issues? Does it require any special release of Ontap? The Now web site mentions this as a possible configuration. Manny

Implementing User and Group Quotas

Friends, We have an F-740 with 14 - 18GB drives (2 hot spares) configured as one large volume. OnTap version 5.3.4R2. Security style is mixed. Currently it is being used by mostly UNIX users, with some Windows users, for Home directories and Project directories. There are only about 15 total active users on the Filer currently. The plan is to move the home directories for the remaining 60 or so mostly Windows users onto the Filer. We would like to implement quotas on the Home directories, e.g. 150MB per user. At the same time, we would like to implement quotas on the Project directories -- my thinking is we would do this via a group quota, e.g. 5GB for Group A, 15GB for Group B, etc. My questions are as follows: 1. Will we need to create separate volumes for Home dir's and Projects, so that the quotas will work as we intend (e.g. a user can own files in his Project directory without it counting against his User quota) -- or can we get away with qtrees? My suspicion is that we will need to start from scratch and create at least two volumes to do this. 2. Suggestions for the best strategy to accomplish this, maintaining all CIFS & NFS metadata? We are currently dumping the filer as one big volume to DLT (<35GB). Does the filer's dump command support dump from a directory, so that we could restore to our new volumes or qtrees? We have a Netapp filer (F760) that we are trying to back up (with Veritas Netbackup, but that's not really relevant to this question) by way of a directly-connected DLT 7000 tape drive in a StorageTek 9740 tape library. We aren't trying to get the netapp to manage the robotic tape handling, we just want to write to the tape that's been manually loaded into the drive. To keep things simple, we are currently bypassing Netbackup and just running the Netapp native dump command. Whenever we do so, we see the following: ********* netapp output below ************** stpnas01> dump 0f nrst0a /vol/vol0 DUMP: Dumping tape file 1 on nrst0a DUMP: creating "/vol/vol0/../snapshot_for_backup.6" snapshot. So we know that NDMP and the Netapp's SCSI card are okay. We have tried different tapes/drives in the STK library, with identical results. These STK drives are known to be functional, as they have been previously connected to our Solaris backup server with no problems. We've been trying this with DLT drives that are alone on the SCSI bus, with non-conflicting ID's and firmly seated connectors and terminators. :) We toyed with the idea that maybe the Netapp is talking single-ended SCSI and since we know the STK drive is differential SCSI... but sysconfig (and the Netapp product docs) verify that this filer is talking differential SCSI. Rob, Maybe irrlevant, but anyway - Have you controlled the tape library using "ndmputil" or Veritas's robot-handling utility (forgot its name) ? From what I know, you need to manually use these utilities to choose tape and load it to correct drive. I am currently evaluating 3 different ndmp backup products. I expect to pick one in about 2 weeks. So far I have been most impressed with Time Navigator by Quadratec Software. I have 2 760's and a Qualstar 4000 Series AIT2 loader. The nice thing is that my 760's are not going to be in production till our fiber switch arrives which is slated for Aug 1, which gives me a nice little test environment. I will post any findings to the list. AIT2 50G tapes

I just installed a Qualstar 4660 AIT2 changer with the new 50G native tapes. However my filer only has options for AIT1 25G tapes and AIT2 36G tapes. They are the same basic tape, just a shorter length. Anyone used the 50G tapes yet? --Brian

A couple of things to be aware of: * You can't convert an existing directory to a qtree so you might have to move some things around. * Make sure your NT users are mapping to distinct UNIX users. By default, if there is no UNIX user corresponding to an NT user those users are mapped to "pcuser". That's not what you want because all NT users will have the same quota since quotas are currently only allowed for UNIX security objects. You can test the mappings using the "wcc" filer console command. Daniel... two brief answers to your questions. #1. You do not have to start from scratch and create two volumes. You can create the quotas you want using qtrees. In fact for maximum performance you would be best off with the one larger volume than two smaller ones given the configuration you described. #2. The filer's native dump command works for directories (qtrees) as well as entire volumes. Just remember when you go to restore a qtree you will need to create the qtree first, then run the restore. The Data ONTAP System Administrator's Guide and the NOW site both have more detailed information on configuring qtrees and running dump/restore. There is probably a way to do it via PC-NFS, but you can also use a free NT tool from NetApp called SecureShare Access. It's a dll that is used by things like Windows Explorer. It's a tab like the security tab for windows. Give it a try if you like. http://now.netapp.com/NOW/tools/supported.shtml It's near the bottom. Don't confuse it with the Account Migrator, you want the SecureShare Access. The cifs.symlinks.enable option just controls whether or not symlinks are followed by CIFS client access. Pre-existing symlinks are fine. Typical problems with CIFS and symlinks are * By default the filer will not follow symbolic links which result in cyclic directory structure. Since CIFS clients don't understand symlinks, we display them as if they were the same object as the destination of the symlink. Programs like "FastFind", which tries to index directories, wind up getting very confused if you have symlinks that refer to directories above the current one. If it is critical to follow such symlinks anyway, you can turn off the cifs.symlinks.cycleguard option. * Symlinks that leave the share are not permitted. That is because it would violate the share-level permissions, or even allow access to portions of the filesystem that were not intended to be shared. Also, symlinks that refer to destinations off the filer are not supported. These types of symlinks however will be supported in the near future using a secure method. The http log is bufferred in a 16k memory buffer but should be flushed to disk no less often than once a minute. A question about /etc/log/httpd.log

We run an F740 which is not licensed for HTTP. Nevertheless, it listens on port 80 and rejects all requests with a "503 HTTP not enabled", and also logs them in /etc/log/httpd.log. That's actually sometimes convenient, as it shows up hackers doing site-wide scans for WWW exposures, without them being too lost in noise. However, there's a peculiarity about the way /etc/log/httpd.log is written which I would like to understand better. It seems as though entries are often not actually written for hours or even days, until a cluster of entries (typically those from our own "friendly probing" service!) fills up some sort of buffer. The option name is actually cifs.symlinks.enable You may also need to look at cifs.symlinks.cycleguard if the symlinks start with . or .. Also you may need to create/modify /etc/symlink.translations if the path the unix clients follow is not the same path the filer would have to follow. See the manpages for options and symlink.translations for more detail. Accessing clearcase vobs from nfs and cifs

currently our clearcase vobs are being stored with its database on a sun server and its storage pools on a filer. this setup has been working well for over a year now and now i would like to try to access the same vobs from an nt. i've been told its possible but i'm not certain of the proper steps involved. the goal is to be able to access the same vob from nt and unix at the same time. here's the setup i've got so far (correct me where i'm wrong) 1. Registry server = reg1 (sun server) 2. Region = 3g (on the sun server) 3. License server = lic1 (sun server) 4. vob databases = /usr/test/vobstore1 (on sun server vob1) 5. vob pools = /usr/test/vobpool1 (on netapp) so far so good... 6. netapp is a member of our nt domain 7. an entry has been made in the usermap.cfg file to map the unix owner: <domainname>\<nt clearcase services account> == <unix vob owner> 8. the replica_uuid file has been copied in from the database directory 9. ???? i'd appreciate any comments on this setup that you might have, joe

Default quota tree quota ?

We recently upgraded to 5.3.5R2P2. In the release notes in the section "New features of Data ONTAP 5.3.4" I saw this under "Quota Features": You can now create a default tree quota that applies to any qtree that does not have an entry in /etc/quotas or any qtree that is created after the default tree quota goes into effect. I couldn't find this documented anywhere in the man pages or the Sys Admin Guide. So I went ahead and put this entry in /etc/quotas, just guessing the syntax: * tree 99M 99K I ran "quota off h2" and "quota on h2" and got no complaints. We recently created a new qtree and added this entry for it in /etc/quotas /vol/h2/t15 tree 1000M 1000K When I ran "quota resize h2" it complained about this new entry. So then I tried this, figuring the default quota might be a per volume thing: /vol/h2/* tree 99M 99K But the quota command didn't accept it, saying "/vol/h2/*: no such file or directory". Since we're looking at different backup solutions, wondering if I could pick the group's respective brains... First, for non NDMP backup, is there special client packs required for either (and is netapp dump supported)? I'm going through Sun since they sell both and they were unaware of any. Second, any thing to be aware/careful about with either backup solution? Third, any problems with ClearCase and either package?
