FAS2050 high CPU usage

Hi All, We're using FAS2050 in one of our branch offices to run VMware cluster over NFS. It turns out that this box runs on 100% CPU usage even when servicing 40MBs/1000IOPS (the max I've seen was 70MB/s). Which results in ridiculous latencies. I do realise that it's a Celeron CPU. I just want to double check with you guys, that it's something you'd expect from this box. Because these days 40MB/s seems to be too little even as a CIFS file server for a small team in a branch office. What is the minimum number of shelves for a FAS3220 HA pair?

Hi all, We are considering a FAS3220HA running clustered ONTAP (8.2) with a single DS4246 shelf. However, we were recently informed by our sales people that this is not possible, and that the minimum number of shelves for an HA pair running cDOT was two. Apparently each node needs it's own DS4246 for the cDOT operating system? Is it not possible to split the disks on a single shelf into two aggregates and assign one aggregate to each controller? Optimizing CIFS for WAN Access

Hi all; ONTAP 8.0/8.1 mix. Looking for best practices on optimizing seqential read (throughput) access via CIFS from WAN locations (up to 80ms latency). Here's what I have so far: - Enable SMB 2.0 on filers. - Increase CIFS TCP Window size to ~2MB (default seems to be 17520 bytes)? - Ensure clients at remote sites have either large TCP window sizes set or allow for TCP window scaling (clients are OSX). Obviously some sort of WAN acceleration appliance at the remote site could help as well. Anything I'm missing? Ray

Remote Power Off and Power On

All -- have a FAS2040C and DS2246 in a remote office where a scheduled power outage is planned for a 48 hour period (longer than UPS runtime at that location). We currently have no on-site staff available. Is it possible to cleanly shut down this device and bring it completely back up via the Service Processor module only? The main piece I'm unsure of is the DS2246. If it uncleanly loses power, will it come back on automatically or does something physically need to be done? Obviously for the controller we can log into the SP and do a 'system power on'. Maybe that command is smart enough to send a signal to the disk shelves as well? Any way to verify disk shelf power status remotely from the SP? Ray

Recovery options using SM

Greetings, I'm experimenting with DR recovery options on filers running 8.1.2P4, 7-mode. We have 10G connections on all the filers. I wanted to use SM since we get close to 1TB/hr transfer between primary and secondary for SM/SV relationships and we have licenses for this on everything. I can't figure how to get data from the SV secondary back to the primary volume using SM. It won't let me set up a SM on the secondary volume because it is a replication destination. I can't delete the baseline snapshot, and a snapvault stop can take 6 hours or more. Once it completes, the destination qtree is gone and SM won't work. I'm going to look into SnapRestore, but it will require some new licenses for some of the filers. Ndmpcopy seems unstable for 10TB volume transfers and is extremely slow and takes days. Rsync of a volume with 50m files takes days also, partly because the rsync system only has a 1G connection. Expected performance difference between two configurations

Hi all; Am trying to understand what sort of performance difference I might see between two different configurations: 1) IBM N6240 E21 (FAS3240C) w/ 120x600GB 15K 3.5" SAS and 512GB of flash cache 2) IBM N6250 E26 w/ 80x900GB 10K 2.5" SAS and 512GB of flash cache. Sorry, on the latter I don't know the equivalent FAS. Probably FAS3250C? We have fewer spindles, but newer, beefier controllers. Our workload is primarily VMware via NFS. Lotsa random reads and writes (more on the read side) with I'd say the bulk of the IO requests in the 64KB+ range. Will I regret going with fewer spindles? Ray

The future of OnCommand Core for 7-mode

Hi, With the release of OnCommand Core 6.0 For Clustered OnTap (phew!), has anyone heard about the future of OnCommand Core (henceforth "DFM") for 7-Mode? Are we seeing the end of feature releases for DFM, and 5.2 is now in perpetual maintenance mode like OnTap 7.3.7? I have no plans or reason to transition to cluster mode and certainly won't do it just to get the latest version of DFM, but I do use the crap out of DFM (GUI, CLI, Protection and Provisioning managers, SnapMirror/Vault management, RBAC, controller user account management, controller config management, etc) and, like any other application, it's always got bugs and issues. I hate to think that DFM is at the end of the road unless I go to cluster mode. Kinda like Microsoft releasing a new version of Office but it only works on a Surface tablet. --- Scott Eno

CF Giveback options

Am running ONTAP 8.1.2 P4.. Currently have the following settings enabled: cf.takeover.on_network_interface_failure on cf.takeover.on_network_interface_failure.policy any_nic Want to enable setting: cf.giveback.auto.enable on Was informed by IBM there is a bug where enabling auto CF giveback can conflict with cf.takeover.on_network_interface_failure, and result in the system getting into an infinite loop of takeovers and givebacks. Do most of you leave auto CF giveback disabled as general policy? Eric

high CP_reads/writes ratio

What kinds of things can cause a high CP_reads/writes ratio? And what can I do about it? I have an Oracle system with ASM that doing writes in a 15 minute cycle, and it causes a lot of writes with CP reads. The oracle ASM luns are basically the only thing on the aggregate. Disk alignment is fine (which is the first thing I thought of). I've attached a screenshot of the Oncommand graph for one of the disks in this aggr-- not sure if that will come through. The filer is a 3220 with 8.1.2 7-mode. Fibre channel attach, and there are about 20 luns under two volumes. TIA, Fred

At 87% it is certainly possible that wafl doesn't have enough contagious free space to write a chain in a single pass...slowing things down substantially. Are your volumes thick provisioned? NetApp Simulator - Using different interfaces for each node of cluster?

Hello, I've got a 3240 HA pair running 7.3.5. We are looking to enable cluster failover for network interface failures. I want to test this with 7.3.5 line of the simulator. I can create a HA cluster with the simulator. The problem is that both nodes of the sim use the same interface on the underlying OS. I would like node1 of the sim to use eth1 and node2 of the sim to use eth2. That way I can simulate a network failure of just one of the nodes of the sim. I have not found a way to achieve this yet. I tried creating 2 separate sim nodes (without clustering) on different interfaces, but after they are both up, the cluster interconnect is missing -- so enabling cf does nothing. Any ideas on how I can do this with the sim? I tried just doing an "ifconfig ns0 down" on one of the nodes of the cluster-- that disconnected the network from that node, but it didn't trigger the cluster failover, so I'm guessing that an ifdown is not the same as a nic failure (at least as far as triggering a takeover is concerned). Greetings, We are looking at upgrading and changing our network architecture. One option would be to use LR GBIC with single mode fibre. This appears to require non-NetApp GBIC which I'm sure makes it unsupported. Is anyone doing this, and if so, which parts are you using and what issues have you run into? SAN vs Software defined storage

Hi all I am currently successfully using a fas3210 as 10g NFS storage for a vmware cluster I have in production. I am currently dedicating 2 shelves of 300Gb drives to vmware, and am getting very good response times. In my test environment, I am using KVM sitting on top of a moosefs cluster (6 machines with 5x 1Tb SATA drives each, and 1Gb network). Disk performance in the VMs is obviously not as good as 10g NFS, but is is definitely acceptable for my database/app servers/etc in test. I am considering my long term storage strategy (both capacity and speed),and I have two roads to go down in order to scale my storage to be able to handle 100s/1000s of vms. The first is to use netapp with large SATA drives for slow storage, and use high speed SAS drives for fast storage, choosing the storage type according to purpose, or I can use something like Moosefs (or more likely, Ceph) to provide a scalable storage cluster off "commodity" hardware, with SSD caching/journalling, and SATA drives for actual storage. Does anyone have experience with both traditional SAN storage, as well as Ceph/Gluster/Moosefs and is willing to share any thoughts/ideas they may have? Regards Chris

Flash Pool experiences with VDI?

Hey all, Who has experiences of using FlashPools for VDI storage? We are currently running approx. 150 VDI machines, using VMware View5. (..numbers will grow) Now we use EMC CX4 with FastCache and have managed with it. We deploy new VDI machines in advance to avoid boot storms, mainly using non-persistent machines. We are looking for new storage now and FAS3220 with FlashPools is one option. If you have some examples of your FlashPool configs and amounts of VDI machines running? So far we haven't used NetApp with VDI at all, just have one FAS2040 as CIFS filer for desktops, Sk

Metrics!

We have a growing deployment with ~25 filers and about 750TB of usable space. Most of it is VMware datastore space exposed via NFS, but some is general purpose NAS file sharing. We've been using OnCommand Core (formerly DFM) to handle reporting and such, and for the most part it's worked pretty well. I need to start pulling together some metrics for the environment as a whole, both to benefit the Storage Team who manages the devices, but also to be able to pass along to my bosses so they can get a basic grasp of how things are going. I'm curious how those of you with deployments similar to mine or larger hvae dealt with this? What sort of things are you reporting on, and how do you handle the "roll-ups" to summarize many (in our case 200+) volumes into something meaningful? Are you generating reports natively from OnCommand Core, or pulling the data out into another tool? Do you find the OnCommand DataSets feature useful? We haven't really leveraged it properly I think. My thought is to present a sort of physical view of our environment showing roll-ups of storage capacity and performance (probably CPU, IOPS and latency). How to give a snapshot overview of the whole environment is what I'm not sure on. I'm thinking using the DataSets will help me organize our various types of data and then I can report on that. I'm not sure, however, if I should spend my time trying to get the right reports out of OnCommand Core directly or if I should just start extracting the data to another tool (which?) or into a database where I can home-brew up what I'm after. Mapping CIFS user to Unix user

I have a very strange issue. The share are exported via CIFS and NFS. System is connect to AD domain and NIS Sometime Windows user creates a file with correct UNIX id, sometime it create a file that is owned by nobody4:x:65534:65534:SunOS 4.x NFS Anonymous Access User:/: I see where it is coming from, first it is matched to correct Unix ID and the right away it is matched to pcuser.... On filer /etc/password pcuser::65534:65534::/: This is waht I see in the messegaes file... configAdvisor question for CM

I know I can trace them, but that's not so sexy. I have the in and out on the node side, but wanted to identify the other side of the stack. This is what I tried from each node, but the output was the same. sis start -s causing system slowdown

Hi all One of the volumes exported via NFS from my fas3210 didn't have dedup enabled when comissioned. It is 250GB, and hosts ploop backed openvz vms. It is currently using about 210GB, and hourly snapshot size is about 6GB. When I run sis start -s on this volume, the entire system slows down to a crawl. My snmp monitoring start timing out, ssh access to the system is hit and miss, taking over a minute to log in, and when logged on, command response is sluggish. I also get the following error in the logs for all snapmirror pairs SnapMirror: source transfer from TEST_TESTVOL to xx.yy.zz:TEST_TESTVOL : request denied, previous request still processing. Fortunately, disk access from clients on this and other volumes are not detrimentally affected, but IO response times do go up by about 100ms. After running overnight for 11 hours, sis status reports Progress: 19333120 KB Scanned Change Log Usage: 88% Logical Data: 151 GB/49 TB (0%) At this rate, it will take about 5 days to finish scanning, leaving me barely able to manage the system effectively while this is happening. Is this normal behaviour - do I just have to wait through it, or can I stop it and correct something before trying again. Also, is the change log filling up towards 100% something to worry about? need advice on using old FAS3140 for snapvault

Hello fellow toaster, We are contemplating an upgrade from our existing FAS3140 to a new FAS3220. The 3140 has served us very well and been unbelievably reliable, but is now 5 years old. We would like to move to a newer filer and more storage. What do to with the old filer and it's three associated shelves (DS14Mk4)? Could it be used as some sort of snapvault device? Currently we back up to LTO-4 tapes via NDMP, which is a bit painful, but we deal with it. I like the idea of having a set of backups on disk, ready to go, and easily accessible. We only use NFS and iSCSI functionality of the filer and have no extra licenses so I'm not very familiar with the day-to-day use of snapvault. Is it feasible to use the retired FAS3140 as a snapvault "container" without having it under an annual service contract? If we pay for a snapvault license on our new FAS3220 does that allow us to use an older filer as the actual storage space? I guess the other option is to mothball the FAS3140, but I hate to put down a good piece of equipment. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

System status degraded after hot adding 2 DS4243 shelves

Hey there, the second question today, sorry for that :) I did attach two DS4243 shelves to a FAS3240HA system today and followed all the instructions, the shelf firmware has been updated in this process and everything looks good as far as I can tell, I can see the 6 shelves now on both controllers, all shelves are multi path ready, disks are visible, etc. One controller shows its health status as OK but the other one shows degraded: robin> system health status show Status --------------- Degraded The reason for that seems to be: Node: robin Resource: Disk 0a.06.10 Severity: Major Probable Cause: Disk 0a.06.10 does not have two paths to controller robin but the containing disk shelf 6 does have two paths. Disk 0a.06.10 may be faulty. Possible Effect: Access to disk 0a.06.10 via controller robin will be lost with a single hardware component failure (e.g. cable, HBA, or IOM failure). Corrective Actions: 1. Reseat disk 0a.06.10 following the rules in the Installation and Service Guide. 2. Wait six minutes for the alert condition to clear. 3. If reseating disk 0a.06.10 fails to clear the alert condition, replace disk 0a.06.10. 4. Wait six minutes for the alert condition to clear. 5. Contact support personnel if the alert persists. 48 entries were displayed. There are exactly 48 entries in the log for all the new 48 disks I added to the systems. If it would really be a disk or shelf fault, I guess I should see these errors on the second controller too, but I cannot see them there. Any ideas what I could to now to diagnose this issue further? I think the usual problems like broken cables, etc. can be ruled out since the second controller is not showing these issues, right? Dear Lazyweb; Wondering if there's a sysstat/nfsstat type command that will show me which "files" (or which initiating NFS clients) are absorbing or generating the most traffic? Trying to figure out which VMDK files or ESX clients are to blame for a recent spike in activity. Ray
