Jeff, There is an existing RFE for this capability - the RFE # is 20166. The description is not yet available on the NOW site... you can track this RFE using BugWatcher. The only thing that springs to mind is that you may be encountering an issue with snapshots of directories that are not in CIFS format, although I would think an error would be logged if that were it. See bug #15840. If that is the issue you can resolve it by setting an option to always create directories in CIFS format. If that is not the problem, we'll need to have you open a call with tech support and provide some packet traces and detailed information about your setup. SNMP counter - integer overflow?

Hello, I am monitoring nfs ops/sec in a F760 filer using MRTG, but the value that I am getting from the last few days are in "negative". I believe it happened an overflow in the integer type used to hold this data, right? Look: [root@foo /root]# snmpget filer-e0.terra.com.br public .1.3.6.1.4.1.789.1.2.2.1.0 enterprises.789.1.2.2.1.0 = -1281161705 I know I can fix this by rebooting the filer. But I don't want to do that. This is a F760 with Ontap 5.3.6.R2. It has a lot of traffic. ;-) Does anyone here knows of a solution to this problem? alternative to ApplianceWatch

I am in search of a application to monitor two F760s. ApplianceWatch can monitor the filers but it runs on HP OpenView. However, I don't have a test environment with OpenView at the moment. Tim, No, we are not doing NFS backups. We have an NT box as a trusted host and the NetApp disks appear as shares on that NT box (which is also the NT server with the tape drives attached. This is the same model as for Unix. Now, when I do the backups, I am essentially backing up an NT box, so all ACL's are preserved. The only problem is that Omniback seems to skip about 25% of the data, with no error messages or anything. Using the regular Backup software that comes with NT works fine. Seen anything like this? Toasterians, I am in a processes of configuring veritas Netbackup on NetApps Filers (840's) and unable to do that. The problem is that Netbackup doesn't allow me to start two jobs at a time. If it schedules on job, the other job stays queued and waits for the earlier job to finish. Can anybody suggest a solution. Veritas Netbackup ver 3.2 with patch and NDMP pack. ONTAP 6.0 addresses this problem by (a) storing NFS operation counts internally in 64-bit containers (b) adding two new variables (of type Counter, rather than the incorrect INTEGER type) to report the low-order 32 bits and the high-order 32 bits. See miscHighNfsOps and miscLowNfsOps in version 1.4 of the netapp.mib. SNMP client software is normally prepared for Counter variables to wrap around. Hello, We are currently testing automated backup software products, for backup up our servers and NetApp filers via NDMP. We've narrowed our seach down to two products: Quick Restore from Workstation Solutions, and Backup Express from Syncsort. I'm wondering if anyone on this list has experience with either or both of these products and if so, would you care to share your opinions or experiences with them? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Bruce is right... the quote as outlined in the e-mail below is incorrect. The exact quote from the Advanced Administration and Troubleshooting "202" Student Guide Dated April 2000 (Page 8 of the performance tuning section) is: "There is an approximate 10% decrease in write performance when the filer attempts to write to a RAID group spanning two adapters. This is due to inherent limitations in the PCI bus." Page 41 of the Performance Tuning Section does not specifically say WRITE performance but page 47 does. I'm sure this issue will be addressed in the next version of the course. Please note... the statement above may no longer apply to the F840 filer (or later filers) or later releases of Data ONTAP. That statement addresses a specific limitation of the PCI bus on Pre-F800 series filers. As always .... This note, as written, is grossly false. The penalty is only on writes, and only noticeable if you're already saturating your NVRAM such that you are writing all the time. AIT libraries

If any of you kind toaster'ites have experience with AIT2 tape libraries, I'd like to here your advice about the different brands available. I've been researching these devices and they all seem to claim pretty much the same specs (duh, they're all using the same Sony drive!). I'm particularly interested in the durability of the robotics. I've been looking at libraries from Spectra Logic, Qualstar, Adic and Overland Data, usually providing from 12 to 24 slots (single drive). The Qualstar folks claim that they're the only supplier that uses a "lead-screw" design instead of belts for better reliability. Any comments? Thanks, Larry.Goodman(a)Intense3d.com

Just an FYI...NetApp has put a "Panic Message Analyzer" onto the NOW site at http://now.netapp.com/NOW/pmsg/pmsg.cgi I pasted the Panic message below into the analyzer and it came up with the same conclusion: Bug Identified: 26472 Bug Title: quota on/resize can panic the machine Description: If user or group names are specified in /etc/quotas and a name cannot be resolved using /etc/passwd or NIS, the filer will panic when reading the quota names file during a quota resize or quota on. Workaround: Avoid doing quota resize and quota on, or use numeric ids to specify users and groups, or make sure any names used will resolve. Suggestion: Upgrade to release 5.3.6R2 Let the Release Comparison Tool show you the differences between 5.3.6R1 and 5.3.6R2. OID's and MIB's

Hello all, I've been recently twiddling about with some snmp monitoring of the funky netapps we have here. The big problem I've fallen over is the complete lack of details when it comes to lists of OID's and specific snmp queries you can make. I need a list of all the things that can be queried on the Netapp, I've managed to pull bits and bobs from the mib and other sources, but the biggest one I've had so far is find entries for Bytes/s per interface (the same for collisions/errors). Are there such entries for load, tempuratures and so on? I've trawled now.netapp, a few FAQ's and also the archived mailing list without much joy :( Any lists or pointers in the right direction would be appriciated.
