Bruce, I called it "folklore" because I was told about the supposed improvement in disk scrub speed by a couple of Netapp engineers at a recent engineering meeting I attended. Maybe it would have been better to say "from unofficial sources, in a casual conversation, sharing afternoon drinks at a Netapp event". The reconstruct speed is set at the default of 4. The 2 systems are very lightly loaded from a user traffic standpoint, cpu load at under 10% during reads and bursting to 20% during WAFL writes. There are 5 minute periods every 30 minutes when the cpu goes up to 95% during SnapMirror operations. Until there is considerably more user traffic on the F840's, I will not be able to ascertain user impact. My main comment was about the total time to do the scrub. Various load, configuration, and performance testing and analysis were done at length on ONTAP 6.0 before its release. Unfortunately we can't catch all bugs in every possible scenario. We are taking immediate action to understand the root cause of why this bug was not discovered internally and correct the situation. Good news! I was incorrect in stating that volcopy/Snapmirror would not work. this information came through a misunderstanding, and has now been clarified. I would really like to hear where you heard that you cannot snapmirror or vol copy between 5.3.6H1 and 5.3.6. This should work just fine and we do different variations of this internally to netapp. Please let me know where you heard this so that I can find out why this rumor started and hopefully stop it from being propagated. We have 2 F840's in production along side 12 F760's. The big "gotcha" for us is that you cannot volcopy or Snapmirror between 5.3.6H1 and the F760 5.3.6 O/S - really not so good in our case as I would love to use volcopy to migrate from the F760 to the F840. These things scream, but its early to compare as our load ramps up. One piece of reality-versus-engineering-claims relates to disk scrubbing. We turned off disk scrub on the F760's because it really impacted user file access. I was told this issue would no longer be a problem. tar against netapp NFS exported FS reports ACL errors?

I'm running HP-UX 11 and mounting a handful of filesystems ovber NFS v3 from a filer. This is fine. The only fly in the ointment is that when I use tar to backup a small set of files, I get error messages like these: "optional ACL entries for </foo/bar/baz> not dumped" I understand that I can avoid these messages with the A switch to tar, but I don't understand what these ACLs are, how tar knows they're there and how they got set. I certainly haven't set any extra ACLs up -- I'm relying purely on the native rwx type permissions here. Edit /etc/rc to match 840 slot configuration. Swap heads. Boot to 5.3.6H1 floppies. Select normal boot. In order to swap out an F760 to an F840 you will have to boot the new filer off of the 5.3.6H1 floppies after attaching the disk shelves. Make sure that you edit the /etc/rc file first to reflect any changes there might be in the slots that your network interface cards are in, then boot from floppies and run a normal boot. Okay, now that the press release is out, and we all know the technical specs of the 840, what I want to know is: Who's using one? Is the throughput as good as the specs show? C'mon, spill it. We've got one on order, and will put it through it's paces as soon as we get it. We use it specifically for multi-client compilation of our software. I through around 20 Solaris systems (mmostly Ultra80's and Ultra60's), a dozen or so HPC3000 systems and a dozen or so NT boxes at it to compile all three platforms we support, and we currently are stressing out our 760. I'll let y'all know what i find. -Jeff

Currently I manage no filers so I cannot really RFE this. As a concept it's in serious conflict with the appliance philosphy. Presenting Netapp as a location disk

I know this is not really, a question that applies just to Netapp's but at the moment I am looking at a SAN that allows the shared remote disk array to be seen by a NT system as if it is a local disk drive (this helps make frontpage happy). And I am trying to find a way to do this with a Netapp as a remote filestore, surly someone has written a NTFS filesystem driver for NT that reads from a network drive, but presents itself as a local drive? the update was driven from technics of amdahl. i don't know if they run the wat. i don't think so. a guy told me that the script would not be working and crashed - but i'm not shure. a further problem for me is, that i'm not the admin of the toaster - i'm the admin of the nt-domain(s) ... so another team did the work together with amdahl - i stand beside and look for 16 hours what they are doing ... it was not the gold-medal for amdahl ... now its sunday the sun is shining and i must cook potatoes for my family. i think on monday the would be new news ... have a nice weekend (i haven't - we copied all data back on our compaq servers ...) newmy -----Original Message----- From: Sam Rafter [mailto:rafter@netapp.com] Sent: Freitag, 22. Hi Ya, Well I remember seeing the WAT tool, reading the initial page but it talk abouting setting it up on a "unix" box, so I quickly lost interest as I have very limited to access to any Unix boxes. The problem is definately not I/O or CPU related. During these problems the CPU and I/O activity is quite low. Console and NFS response are excellent, but as soon as you do any CIFS commands or CIFS file access then everything becomes very very slow. Greetings from Japan, We had much the same issue. If you are seeing the same thing, then the "Max pBlk Exhaust" from the "cifs stat" goes into the millions. It's normally at 0. We had to rollback to OnTap 5, which wasn't that easy. I haven't seen NT security problems with cluster. If a CIFS client is in the middle of a transaction and a takeover occurs, they will have to restart their transaction just as if the filer rebooted. CIFS is stateful and doesn't handle disconnects as gracefully as NFS. But once the takeover occurs, you can restart your transaction and you'll be fine. The client will re-connect to the server (this time the surviving partner) and keep running along. That's been my experience in the field. I had a few 'orrible troubles when I went up. It could have been me, but I did loose some qtree info, and we had problems with some of our source safe software. I would advise you read the bug list carefully, as well as the start here. Ok, Here is my query...Being a Solaris administrator I have unfortunately been put in a situation where I have to build a Netapp for an NT domain. We already have one system running CIFS that is a single point of failure. I want to cluster this system, but I don't understand the nuances of CIFS clustering. I'm curious if the NT Domain security issues pose any problems to the clustering software, or if the Virtual Machine created on a takeover negates these problems. Your help is appreciated.
