syslog appliance avail ??

Hi, please ignore my email if you think not relevent to the toasters or cache email lists Does anyone know of a 'syslog' applicance box that has a nice management interface to system, has a nice archival system for old logs and can cope with large amounts of file store for old logs. I am well aware this can be done with unix boxs etc and raid arrays but it seems since syslog is a single function the applicance route map maybe the bext method of progression. a newreader functionality to read the syslog store would be useful as well. storage of cache logs via ftp would be useful as well. storage of archival system email would also be useful. mount: RPC: Authentication error; why = Client credential too wea k

Hello, From what I've found, NetApp filer will refuse mount requests if the source port of that request is less than 1024, or "unprivileged". The problem we have right now is accessing NetApp trough the firewall. So we have a couple of NetApps and Sun servers that are behind port-mapping firewall. I can mount everything from Sun, but when we are trying to mount something from netapp, I get this error message on a client client% mount netapp1:/some_dir mount: RPC: Authentication error; why = Client credential too weak With tcpdump I see how mount requests from client (client.678 -> netap1.sunrpc)are being translated on firewall: firewall1.61128 -> netap1.sunrpc My question is, if there is a way to put netapp in a less secure mode, to allow mount requests from unprivileged ports? Thank you

Hi, I downloaded the filer mrtg and have been able to get it running on my 840. What I have discovered is that the disk usage is not showing. Anyone have any pointers what the problem might be? Thanks

The "transparent" option was added in MRTG 2.7.1 (according to the CHANGES file in the latest version of MRTG). The version of MRTG included in the NOW download package (which combines MRTG with some Filer-specific configuration things) is older than that, so that explains why it doesn't recognize "transparent". Regarding the disk usage problem, I just tried the NOW version of MRTG with the latest version of ONTAP, and didn't see any problem with the disk usage. Home directory vs. any other directory

Why is it that both Unix and WindowsNT clients can read and write to the Home directory and not to qtrees created by us unless you set up mapping? NT Permissions and Unix

Greetings: We have a NetApp 740 filer running ONTAP 5.3.6R2. We have created a qtree on vol0 set up as NTFS with full control local and share permissions granted to Everyone (although later we want to clamp this down). We want one of our UNIX servers to be able to write to a subdirectory inside this qtree, but it will not work. When we try to do a RCP into that subdirectory from the UNIX box as root, we get a permission denied error. What are we missing? BACKUP "APPLIANCE"

The "appliance" term is so overused now, so please grant a little leniency on this one... Is anyone out there using a backup "appliance" to run NDMP-compliant software, such as Veritas or CommVault? I know there are new hardware "appliance" manufacturers springing up almost daily, and some of them are venturing into tuned boxes for specific applications, like e-mail or backup. Am interested in: - rack-mountable, small form factor (1U or 2U) - easy implementation - reliability - ease of administration - low initial cost/TCO - viability of manufacturer (can they support their product? are they going to be there to continue to support it in 3+ years?) Would prefer NT/W2K/W2K Adv Srvr OS, but any Unix/Linux-based product would be okay, too. Also, want to stick with Veritas or CommVault, unless there is some compelling reason to consider another. SUMMARY: Comments on NetApp clusters

Attached are the messages I received in response to my query about clusters. Names have been removed to protect the guilty. --Brian L. Brush Senior Systems Administrator Paradyne Corporation Clustering is great, if you expect the head to go down a lot. In our experience, we have had more problems with disks, shelves, LRCs, etc going bad, all problems that clustering can not help. It does make it nice when we have to do maintenance, though; we can fail everything over to the second head, do the maintenance, power up the first head, and give back the disks to the first head. Repeat for the second head, and the cluster is ready to go without the user noticing. Just from personal experience, a F760 cluster is less cost effective than an F840c cluster. Due to a combination of hardware and software limitations with the 7xx series filers, a single F760 filer can handle 1.4TB of data (raw), or up to almost 3TB with Ontap 6.0. Unfortunately, a cluster of F760's can also handle only 1.4TB of data, or up to almost 3TB with 6.0. This makes sense when you consider that in a cluster, a single head will be doing the work of two. With the new 8xx series filers running 6.0, these limitations have been overcome, meaning a single filer can handle upwards of 6TB alone, or 12TB in a cluster. We have had one case where clustering came back and bit us, though. Something went bad and corrupted a volume. That caused the first filer to shutdown. The cluster pair saw that its partner was down, took over the disks, found a corrupted volume, and it shutdown too. But that said, clustering has probably saved us more than it has hurt us. I guess that's why we have 6 F760 clusters now. I like mine. When one died, no one else knew. The cluster partner even answered pings while I had the system board out on the bench. We got a pair of F840s scheduled to arrive tomorrow with the cluster options. It will be a week or so before we're able to test it and finally roll it into production. However, we visited the local NetApp office where they had a pair of F760s running ONTAP 6, and they were clustered. A co-worker and I spent over two hours playing with it. What happens if we do <this>? Or <that>? Or pull this cable? Or shutdown the filer when it's trying to fail back? All kinds of cool stuff I would never try with my own filers! The long and the short of it was: it behaved as claimed. The nice thing about netapp clustering is that you have two fully functioning filers. You do not have one active filer and another waiting in "standby" mode. So this means that you can put half your data on one filer and half on the other. If one fails, then the other assumes the identity of its failed partner and pretends to be two different filers. Of course one filer doing the work of two won't perform as well as two filers. To accomplish this feat, each filer needs two FCAL adapters and each disk shelf has two FCAL adapters. You connect the primary adapter on filer A to the primary adapters on filer A's shelves. You connect the secondary adapter on filer A to the secondary adapters on filer B's shelves. You connect the primary adapter on filer B to the primary adapters on filer B's shelves, and I'll bet you can guess what you connect to filer B's secondary adapter. In the event of a failover, the surviving filer has access to its partner's shelves via its secondary adapter. A failover looks like the failed filer rebooted, so it's not 100% seamless. NFS service will resume, but CIFS clients must reconnect. I just setup a 760 cluster. It is pretty cool, I have never had either filer fail so I don't really know how the cluster works in "real world" failures. But I have gone over multiple times and just unplugged one of the head units to show people how they work. From all the tests I have done, I am very confident in its abilities. Do you have any specific questions? On a side note, the setup of the 760 was so darn easy, I thought I must have done it wrong. If you do get a 760 cluster save your money and install it yourself. It was just two extra cables and 4 more commands.

This option restricts mounts to the filer to use the privileged ports only (1 - 1024). NTAP no longer offerring FDDI?

According to the EOA notice it seems that there won't be any future FDDI adapters from NTAP. A sad day. Is nobody making PCI FDDI cards anymore or is the market opportunity for FDDI too small these days? Is everyone replacing it with Gigabit Ethernet? Bruce

Bruce, We do share - but you can only share so much... I only have four volumes per filer that I need to implement a project. Other volumes are there because of the space requirements even then I only have seven! - that is an extra two to hold databases which tend to be LARGE and another to hold the development areas. Due to the size of a volumes it already takes us getting on for 6 hours to do some restores (The backups are quicker) Larger volumes would extend that time which would become unacceptable. Not that we have to do many due to the way it all hangs together... BTW our developers seem to like it! Which may surprise you. Bruce, Consider the following: One "project" using good configuration management techniques should have areas for: Development - where the programmers dream up the code Integration - where the developers code is brought together System test - where the whole issue is tested for compliance to the spec Released - which is a "development system copy" of what is sent to production to facilitate testing future bug fixes while the next release is prepared. A project based web area where project based documentation and information can be maintained as both development and released versions A customer acceptance test area A training area Each of these instances may have one of: A database A www area An area for developing the code An Archive log area for the database An Administrative area for the database An Export area for the database A configuration management tool area All of these area's have to be set up so the correct ownership and access rights are maintained to stop for example: Developers code from inadvertently accessing any other area and vice versa One projects members from accessing another projects areas Access via a web listener giving inadvertent access to other parts of a directory tree/system. I.e. it is treated like a production system in this aspect. Efficient use of resources e.g. not having one web listener per project. All of these areas need to have space management so something running amok in the developers area will never fill up or inhibit the space allocated to system test for example. By simple rules it is not a good idea to have database and archive logs in the same location nor should you put exports on either of these locations. The database is Oracle and an OFA compliant structure means the admin side is somewhere else in the tree. We use this to put the "second" control file on a different volume - as is good database practice. When it comes to snapshots database areas typically on a development system get changed, not often, but when we delete a database I do not wish to have to wait until the snapshot rules we apply to code development areas expire before I can recreate or restore that database from a backup. Each project may have up to five parallel iterations each of which is a replica of the above. Each instance of the application when a project runs shall only "talk" to its appropriate bits and pieces. I.e. hopefully the code that runs in the integration area will not talk to the copy of the system test database (and vice versa) Some other constraints: Operating system upgrades should not impinge on development work Other software upgrades should not impinge on development work The development process when taking on upgrades should be able take on the upgrade as the appropriate software progresses through the life cycle e.g. first development, then integration etc. etc. One project should not be able to interfere with another project space allocation wise. Projects should be easy to add, delete and archive (archive = when no longer required) New projects should be up and running with full blown facilities as quickly as possible Use resources efficiently Be run with the minimum number of administrative staff. When you then say 100 projects and we are still growing, with getting on for 250 databases (for good reasons projects do not have all the bells and whistles above - but we have to be able to cater for tomorrows request! - you know what developers are like...) on two filers maybe you perhaps begin to see a little more of the problem. We have a design which is working well at this time but we perceive we will not be able to grow this "shape" of implementation of very large disks for the reasons stated. In the end we may have 1000 or more projects - please pass the aspirin I have a headache. Our experience has been the same. Constant vague and non-descriptive errors (like vol:/vol0 cannot open or somesuch that Legato support was completely unable to help with) and generally a lack of confidence in the reliability of the backups. We've since gone back to NFS-based backups as well. Gigabit cards and HP switches

Got a weird problem. I have a 740 and two 760's. Right now the 40 is plugged into a 3com gigabit switch. But when I move it to the new HP procurve switch it does not come up. The really weird thing is I can move either of my 760s over there and they work great. Is there something really different about the 40's and 60's for ethernet config? The 740 does have a default setting in the rc file that looks like this: ifconfig e8 `hostname`-e8 mediatype auto The 760 does not have anything in the rc for ethernet since it is not in service yet. Ideas? --Brian

Using large disks on Filers

All, We have a development environment which supports quite a few projects. In order to support the typical development lifecycle we have a directory structure on our servers mounted from the filer which mean we consume 10 or so quota tree entries per project. These are all on different volumes to separate databases, archives/export areas and software etc. to enable us to manage space allocation/snapshots for each different type of use. The set-up has been working very well for two years or so. What I perceive to be the issue with large disks, is for some of the volumes we will only need one or two disks to provide the required capacity (at 70Gb per disk for example = 140Gb with three disks approx just using simple arithmetic). This is below the optimum for performance on a raid group. The parity disk as a ratio is 1/3 of the volume which is inefficient by a long way. Given there is a limit of 255 quota trees per volume adding any more disks for performance/efficiency is a waste of space as the number of quota trees will be exceeded before the need for space is. As disks get larger the problem gets worse. I can see how this situation would not necessarily arise if you are an ISP but development is a different issue I feel. The way round this may be to have what I have decided to call "virtual volumes". By this I would create a volume with sufficient disks in the raid group to give me both performance and efficiency. This would the be able to support a number of these "virtual volumes" across those disks. Each of those "virtual volumes" would also need to be adjustable in size either up or down and facilitate all other volume characteristics. This would then allow me to have an efficient system and also be able to manage the quota tree, placement and snapshot issues. This would also allow me to make full use of say an F840. It's projected capacity I could never achieve in a clustered environment as the maximum number of shelves per head is still 16. The only way to reach the capacity the filer head can support is using larger disks. Have I missed anything? Is there a better way to resolve this other than the suggestion above? Do you see it as a problem - or am I out on a limb here? Thanks for any input Ray Griffith

Opinions on NetApp clusters

At headquarters, my company is using an F230 and an F740 to provide NFS for about 200 Sun boxes and lots of Pea Seas (via Samba, actually--don't ask). We also have a collection of host-attached storage devices on various Sun servers. For some time, we've been migrating our most massive data stores to the F740. Seeking more performance, capacity, and redundancy, we're now considering replacing the F740 with a pair of clustered F760s. We've been using filers for a couple of years and have discussed the options with NetApp and our VAR. I would like to hear some opinions about and experiences with NetApp's clustering solution. Because of the expense and the risks of consolidating most of our data in one place, we want to be sure the configuration will provide the level of protection we need. Is it robust? Does it really have the capabilities claimed by the documentation? Are there any tips or tricks or "gotchas" we should know before we proceed? --Brian L.
