Neil, Not all files are created equal you can say... :) My explanation would be that some files are being read from the read-ahead cache, and some from the disks. This makes a difference. Also - some more HTTP commands here and there, and there you have your small difference. Hmm. Is there anything useful under /var/log/messages ? I can't think of anything else. If you have NFS over tcp turned on on the filer you could try mounting it over tcp on the linux box. We have a Dell Linux 7.0 system that can't mount from a 740 (5.3.4R2). However it can mount from a 540 (5.1.2R3), and also from a AIX (4.2) and Sun (2.6) machine with no problems. Packet sniffer indicates that packets are sent to the filer but never return. A little more info, the filer mounts OK to linux 5.2 (Red hat) and all sorts of other machines. The filer and the failing machine can ping, and telnet to each other. ----- Stephen C. Silly question, is nfs licensed and turned on? At first I thought this might be some sort of local caching problem, but I think I have eliminated that possibility. Do you all see the thing? Backups on F630 filers

I have four (4) F630 filers (yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, upgrade!) and an additional two (2) F740 filers. I want to direct attach at least 1 drive from a library to each filer and I want to use Ultrium LTO libraries. Failing LTO support, I would like to use AIT-2 libraries. The problem that I have is that neither of these is officially support on the F630 platform! (AIT-2 is on the F740) Does anyone have AIT-2 running on F630? I don't want to run Mammoth, as I have heard too many horror stories (yes, I know that M2 beats AIT-2 by 2:1 for speed and by 10GB capacity, but that's irrelevant if the drive is down for maintenance much more often). Better yet, does anyone have LTO running on a Filer of any model, preferably a F630? (since they are barely shipping LTO, I doubt it). If you don't know what LTO is, go looking at HP, Seagate or IBM. Seagate seems to have the best drive at 16mb/sec with 100gb capacity and I think that this is due to a variable speed motor (which should also allow it to kick HP & IBM's butt when you can't keep data streaming in at 15mb/sec or better!) Your choice for AIT-2 is solid (2 generations, backward read/write compatible, investment in media usable in later generations, less than 2% AFFR (raw field failure rate over the past 4 years)NDMP compliant, etc.etc. By the way, what have you heard about LTO's field reliability, cross-compatibility format compliance,(multiple manufacturers of LTO on the same format should be able to read data written by other mfgs. LTO units), media availability, and any actual backup/restore stories. I'd like to hear from anyone out there why they are looking at this format vs. sticking with DLT or transitioning from formats at the end of their cycles (DAT, Travan,etc.) 'Backup is worthless if you can't restore it.' Neil - I am one month into a Qualstar 4440 with 2 AIT2 drives. So far, no problems :) Using Veritas NetBackup with one AIT2 drive direct attached to the NetApp. The other drive is connected to a Ultra10 and does the rest of the network. BakBone 6.03 has command line functions as well as the BEST NetApp and NDMP support

This email was forwarded to me by an acquaintance, and I would like to give some feedback. First of all, I work for BakBone as the Northwest Regional Manager, and have been familiar with the NetVault product since 1995, when AT&T still owned the product. My last company, Andataco, was the original reseller of the product then, and since, the product has been acquired by BakBone, and world headquarters have been moved to San Diego, with other engineering and support facilities in Lanham, MD, England, and Japan. 6.03 gives you the command line interface capabilities that John Ross referred to. In 6.01, they were not available. With the product as modular as it is, we received numerous request for command line, and turned out the functionality within months. NDMP and NetApp support are also a feature set of 6.03, and the performance is quite spectacular there as well, as John found with the Exabyte M2 drives. We are seeing as much as 19MB/sec with a STK 9840 directly attached to a NetApp. It takes just minutes to hook up a NetApp box, and similar amount of time and effort to use Netvault to back up a SAN. Hello Douglas I work with Veritas Netbackup 3.4 and STK 9714 libraries with DLT 7000 drives. I am not sure your problem originates from the Breecehill library. I experience very similar problems to what you described, so I will write down freely some points I can think of. 1. Did the problems start when you upgraded to 3.4 , or have you experienced such problems prior to using 3.4 as well ? 2. Drives are brought down if they experience 3 i/o errors within 12 hours. Check the following places to see if this occur 1. Media log report ( invoke it from xbpadm->reports ) 2. /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/bptm/log.<date> 3. /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/bpbrm/log.<date> 4. /var/adm/messages In all these log files grep for DOWN or Down - some lines before or after it will describe the reason for bringing the drives down 3. If you change passowrd on the netapps you have to report this change to Veritas NetBackup using /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/set_ndmp_attr command. If you fail to do it the drives go down. The art of HTTPD configuration

'options httpd.rootdir' allows one to specify at minimum a volume, such as /vol/vol0. So far I have not succeeded through the use of /etc/httpd.translations to access files on different volumes. Searching the NOW site hasn't revealed much either, although the documentation tends to indicate a 'map' entry in /etc/httpd.translations is the way to do it. I find it hard to believe there isn't a method to jump out of the directory tree specified by httpd.rootdir and access other parts of the filer. If it's not possible the SAG and 'First-Time Setup' documentation should be much clearer on the issue that once you commit to a rootdir it is impossible to access data outside of that hierarchy without redirecting to a client that can read the data off a mount. As I missing something? Is there some magic that can be done in /etc/httpd.access? When I copy a file on the NetApp via cifs, it sets the Unix permissions to 777. I have Full Control access to my share. Is there a way keep Full Control but make it so that all cifs copies would be 644? quota limits

Hi! My problem is that I have set up quotas for my users on F740 running Ontap 5.3.6r2. They each have 200Mb. But four users that work on a special project have extra space of 2Gb. I've set up a qtree with limit of 2Gb. But when the four users start to write, they hit their personal limits. Quotas can be applied either to an entire volume, or to qtrees within that volume. If a user exceeds either of these, the write will be denied. If you want to allow users to write more data to a qtree that would exceed their quota for the volume, you'll need to use a different volume for the qtree. Or to change the existing user quota to one that applies to a qtree instead of the whole volume. Of course, this also applies to group quotas. Hi! I had the same issue a fw weeks ago. The key factor is how you have set the users quota's up. There are several caragories of quota I believe. If you have given each user a quoa, with the quota type user then anything they write, any where on the filer will be subtracted from thier quota. This is how I understand it, but I may be wrong... A way to get round this would be to give everyone a root account, but this is a bit dodgy as far as security goes...
