Just wanted to get some feedback regarding Syncsort's Backup Express running on Tru64 4.0f. We are considering acquiring a Network Appliance filer and need strong NDMP support and this product seems to have good support of both, but I would like to know what the rest of you think?

This should work, the difference between doing that and doing ndmpcopy is that by doing dump|restore via rsh, you are actually pumping the data through the client. That's fine..as long as you have a beefy client and a big pipe between the filer and the client. The nice thing about ndmpcopy is that it keeps the traffic within the filer (on the loopback interface). So either way works, take your pick. We run Tru64 4.0f with various Oracle databases from 7.3.4 to 8.1.7. I am researching acquiring a filer, probably an F840, to host the datafiles for some of my databases, as well as other file types such as Lotus Notes .nsf files, generic user file sharing, etc. I'm presently sustaining a combined 30 MB/Second with over 600 Transactions/Second over periods of an hour or more according to 'collect -T' on my UNIX boxes. I would mount the datafiles via nfs over GigE using an rsize/wsize of 8192 (the maximum for our version of Tru64) to two different servers, one for each database. I would run the fiber from each server through a 6509 and probably trunk two lines together from the switch to the filer. Any comments on the architecture, such as the Cisco trunking? Any comments on Oracle on a filer? Any comments on Tru64 with a filer? Any comments on my throughput requirements? Am I crazy? I really appreciate all of your help. It's very hard to prove that all the pieces will work right without hearing a little bit from everyone about their individual "real-world" experiences with the above. All, I'm a little confused about what I need in order to run this tool. I've installed SSQM but it tells me that the quota's haven't been turned on (they have). I installed SSAM but have not run it. If all it does is add NT users to the filler:/etc/passwd and quotas files then this has already been done. What am I doing wrong? ndmpcopy copies data over the loopback device. If i remember right, loopback data is also accounted to network traffic in sysstat. Hi, When running ndmpcopy, copying data localy, on an idle machine, I notice that when running sysstat I see that while there is intensive disk activity there is also intensive network activity of similar magnitude. I assumed that all the data would remain local on the netapp without any attempt of data going over the net. Can someone explain.

Not exactly. You can't do it on the command line, but the ndmpcopy utility does what you are looking for. You take a client and run ndmpcopy with the source and destination being the same filer. This effectively does a dump | restore on the same filer (it acutally uses the loopback interface, which is effectively the same thing). Since the data doesn't go through the client, it doesn't really matter what the client is or the network connectivity to the filer. I've done this with a SPARC 10 with a 10BT connection to the filer. The only traffic that comes back to the client are occasional status packets so that ndmpcopy can update you every 5 minutes. So the functionality is possible, just not exactly how you would expect to execute it. ndmpcopy is available at ndmp.org or from the NOW site. When a file has NTFS security the NT account information is used to validate access to that file. In an NTFS qtree all files normally have NTFS security, so that is how the checking is done. Is there any reason you don't want to have the mapped NT accounts as members of the appropriate NT groups which you can then use to set the security? convert from User Quota to Qtree Quota ?

Hi, I have a 400GB volume with 350GB of data for 35 projects running 5.3.7R2 All projects are currently using user quota. I'd like to convert them to qtree quota to have several users working in the same directory. I have vol1/projects/prj1, vol1/projects/prj2, ..., vol1/projects/prj35 I'd like to create rsh filer "qtree create /vol/vol1/prj1" rsh filer "qtree create /vol/vol1/prj2" ... rsh filer "qtree create /vol/vol1/prj35" but then how do I move my data from vol1/projects/prj1 to vol1/prj1, from vol1/projects/prj2 to vol1/prj2, ... from vol1/projects/prj35 to vol1/prj35. According to the documentation for ONTAP 5.3, UNIX groups are not used in the mapping from a UNIX identity to a CIFS identity when accessing a NTFS security style qtree. Does anyone happen to know of a way that we can circumvent this problem so that we can have the NTFS qtree recognize and except a UNIX accounts gid. Thanks in advance, K. Is it possible to do a dump / restore on the same command line like in Unix? (similar to dumping to standard out then reading from standard in ). I want to dump some files from one volume to new volume, then move the remaining files to a 2nd new volume (all on the same filer). NetApp documentation says to vol copy the complete volume then blow the files I don't want away. This seems like doubling my work. Any ideas / help? thx in advance - jc James C. Hi Neil, ndmpd version is a command used to set the version on your filer to a particular version. It will not display the NDMP version on the filer. Actually, as the NDMP server and client negotiate the version they can use, the ndmp session being used can vary for every session. For your OnTap version 5.3.6 , NDMP version 1, 2 and 3 are supported. So it depends on the NDMP application to use any one. 72 GB drives vs. large volumes

We have an F760 with two shelves of 72 GB drives. There are two volumes of five drives each. We now face the decision to expand one of the volumes or create a new three-drive volume, leaving one hot spare. If we create a new volume, we lose yet another large chunk of space for parity. (We also get a small number of spindles, but performance hasn't proven to be a problem in our situation.) If we expand an existing volume, we get an uncomfortably large volume. The volumes are already 215 GB. We're leaning toward the latter resolution, because disk usage inexorably increases, and purchasing more hardware is not an option even on the horizon. How have others dealt with these matters? Do such large volumes entail problems beyond the obviously longer backup and restore times? Are we overlooking any major issues? --Brian L.
