I don't think you want that, especially also for NPIV. You need an F port or an N port, not an E port. E ports are expansion ports, for ISL (inter-switch linking), and connect two switches together. F ports are fabric ports, and are used for point-to-point connections (hosts, storage systems, etc). N ports are node ports, similar to F ports, used for point-to-point or switched fabrics. Reallocate in ONTAP 8.2

However I believe later versions of ONTAP have lessened the need for regular reallocation. Is that the case, or is it worth running regular reallocate measures? Backing up NetApp running CDOT with TSM

All, I've done a lot of browsing around of both NetApp resources and TSM resources and can't find an answer to this. This has lead me to this mailing list! We are currently deploying a NetApp FAS 8040 with around 500TB of disk behind it and we use TSM as a backup solution. Does anyone have a similar setup? How are you backing it up with TSM? Do you have configuration notes you'd be willing to share? We've looked at Snapdiff but this is unsupported with CDOT presently (http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21633171) So I think we are looking down the NDMP route - however I'm not sure of exact implementation details of this... do we need to dedicate tape drives to this? What are its limitations? How do file restores work? etc. etc. etc. Anyone that can provide any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

SAS controller limitations.

Greetings, A while back there was a known issue with the SAS controller. Each chip that controlled 2 ports would only address 128 devices. That included shelf controllers so technically 5 ds2246 shelves would exceed the limit and could cause some slowness. I was told that they changed this behavior in 8.1 and possibly upgrading the firmware, so that it only kept active devices in the list. I was told those devices would be removed when not active and so there was no need to keep the smaller shelf limit. Is this the case, or do I still need to try to limit each chip to 5 shelves or less? I'm running 8.1.2P4 and the cards are running 01.11.00.00. Oracle access and backups

Greetings, My Oracle experience with and without NetApp has largely been non-existent. Please bear with me on this. All of our current DBs are on dedicated servers with locally attached storage. One of our groups has a 6280 cluster running 8.1.2P4 7-mode. They want to look into using iscsi to a new 11.2 Oracle server. The cluster can get pretty busy at times so I'm not sure Oracle NFS will work in this case. The questions are largely about backups and DR. I'm curious about how most people choose to back this up and how to recover for that solution. I know there are lun copy options, snapmanager/flex clone options, etc. We're very open to manual scripting and custom solutions. Backups would most likely go to a NearStore, and the DR would be a second server connected via iscsi also. OnCommand Balance Question

Running OnCommand Balance 4.1.0.2.9 Not an expert with it tool and looking for a "quick" fix here, though obviously reading through the manual more thoroughly is on the TODO list (Google search didn't net me anything). Overnight, have had some growth on one of our VMware volumes (NFS attached volume). System Management Console shows that heavier than normal write activity began overnight and is ongoing. Balance shows the same, but I'd like to see which VM living on the volume is responsible for the writes. I'm not seeing an obvious way to do this in Balance, however. At the volume level view there's a Servers tab, but it doesn't show anything helpful. The Capacity tab shows trend information for the entire volume only. On the Servers tab I can click on individual "servers" (VM's) and view some information about disk activity (though it doesn't break it out into read/write), but this is a bit on the tedious side. Was hoping Balance would make it easy to track down the source of this sort of activity. Any ideas? Ray

Migrating from copper gigabit to fiber 10Gb

Hi, I'm currently planning to migrate my FAS2240's ggiabit links to 10Gb links. Since the 10Gb cards are already in place in the filers, the physical part is already done. I'm currently using the 4 Gb links (e0a -> e0d) as a LACP connection to a stack of juniper devices. Providing the config is OK on the switch, what woule be the best way to migrate with the minimum downtime ? I'm planning the following (on each node of the box): - make sure config on the 10Gb ports of the switch is good - plug fibers on both sides - login via console port - cf disable - ifgrp destroy LAG_CIFS - ifgrp create lacp LAG_CIFS -b ip e1a e1b - cf enable Would it do the job ? Would I need to restart services like iSCSI/NFS/CIFS/.... ? Thanks

Migrating from 7-Mode to CDOT without downtime

Hey there, we're getting a new FAS8020 during the next weeks and my task now is to move all the data on our current 7 mode filers onto the new one. I've already made non disruptive plans for the VMware datastores and all the NFS shares, so that's not an issue anymore - but I'm wondering about how to non disruptively migrate my iSCSI LUNs presented to my microsoft failover clusters. Any ideas on that? I'm thinking about setting up some kind of software RAID 1 (if that's supported) on the host side with the new and the old LUNs like we did back in the good old days when we used Veritas volume manager on EMC boxes, but I'm not sure if that's a supported scenario. I'm pretty sure some of you have gone through that already so I would be thankful for any ideas in that regard. Greetings, Looking for a quick way to determine what versions of SSL are in use in DOT (7-mode). I could not find anything specific. http://heartbleed.com/ I assume the version of SSL is probably not 1.0.1 - 1.0.1f on the Netapps. Anyone have any ideas where to look?

OSSV server database cleanup

Greetings, I was hoping for a quick fix since it is Friday afternoon. If nothing works out I may open a call or just wipe everything out. We have OSSV3.0 running on a linux server. It is installed on / and filled up / today. I found a -checksums file dated today that is 30G. There is another one for the same date last month of the same size. No other checksums file is larger than 10G. The file system that backups up on the 11th of the month is smaller and has considerably fewer inodes in use than most others. There is no reason it should be 3x the size of any other checksums file. There are no current snapvault transfers running and I've stopped/started snapvault. I have several checksums files on dated when backups don't even run. I also found out that / is not backed up so I have no old backups of the database. Is there a way to do a purge or cleanup of the database? If not, I guess I'll just uninstall and start fresh. Unfortunately that is a baseline of 60+TB. How to force a particular access with NTFS permissions

Hi, We have a number of volumes on NetApp filers (OnTAP 8.1.2 7-mode) configured with NTFS permissions. The problem is that users, via their windows clients, sometimes set permissions so that administrators, including the backup software (which is in the "Backup Operators" group) cannot see data. Is there a way that I can add an ACE to all files and directories in a qtree without interfering with existing ACEs? I’ve tried using the storage-level security guard but this does not appear to allow you to add access, only limit it. If I set permissions via the fsecurity command it wipes out all previous ACLs and only puts in the ones in the configuration file I give it. Of course I cannot fix the permissions via a Windows client as my account (even though it is an administrator) does not have access. Thanks in advance! FCP switch / port info

Hi All, With OnTAP 8.x (afaik), it became possible to see what FC switch name / port number a filer is connected to on SAN: filer> fcp show adapters -v .. Switch Port: fc-corp-203:22 // fc-corp-203 - switch name // 22 - port number I assume a certain FCP request makes it possible and wonder if a similar tool is available on a Linux server (Im running CentOS mainly). Apologies if this is too off-topic. Still no SNIA sponsored list out there for general storage discussion that I'm aware of. :) This is more for the folks using their filers in tandem with VMware... Am curious how you toaster admins out there are reacting to all of the new-fangled converged options (Nutanix, Simplivity -- not so much the UCS/vBlock type stuff) out there? Dipping your toes in the water to experiment? Going all in with C-Mode and sticking with your NetApps plus traditional servers? ONTAP 8.1.4 and UTF-16 Supplementary Characters

Hello Toasters, Has anybody upgraded to ONTAP 8.1.4 and made considerations for the new way ONTAP handles UTF-16 Supplementary characters? If so, how did you go about evaluating your exposure to issues with the new way the UTF-16 Supplementary characters are handled? The 8.1.4 release notes state the following: ------------------- *Change in how Data ONTAP handles file names containing UTF-16* *supplementary characters* Starting with Data ONTAP 8.1.4, there is a change in how Data ONTAP handles file names containing UTF-16 supplementary characters that you must be aware of if your environment uses such file names. Unicode character data is typically represented in Windows applications using the 16-bit Unicode Transformation Format (UTF-16). Characters in the basic multilingual plane (BMP) of UTF-16 are represented as single 16-bit code units. Characters in the additional 16 supplementary planes are represented as pairs of 16-bit code units that are referred to as surrogate pairs. When you create file names on the storage system that contain supplementary characters, Data ONTAP checks the surrogate pairs. If they are valid, Data ONTAP accepts the file name. If they are invalid, Data ONTAP now rejects the file name and returns an invalid file name error. --------------------------------- Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated. I also have a ticket with NetApp support. The first gentlemen I spoke with said he didnt know much about this issue despite his having worked with several customers running 8.1.4. A tough situation - what would you have done?

Note - this happened in the past. I'm just rehashing my hellish night for some thoughts from this list. This might be a lot of words. Some background info: The plan was to move roughly 1.5T of images from a broken Sun 7110 ZFS pair to our newer FAS3250. I had been doing nightly rsyncs over NFS between the two systems, which took roughly 8-9hrs to traverse the 1.5M files. The night I was going to execute the move, we had a network "event"...basically a catastrophic situation where a huge influx of network traffic inside of our cage caused two core switches to simultaneously reboot themselves (trying to put it nicely, our network architecture is "original," built through 10 years of a business that never dedicated more than 1% to the IT budget). Anyway, the network event caused the Sun 7110 to basically explode, never actually got the data back online. Luckily I had done a --delete dryrun the night before, so the new location was mostly updated and I had a list of files to remove. Though the 7110 isn't what I want to talk about. One of our other FAS2240's went offline as well. I come to find out that the controllers were not redundantly connected to the network. Apparently because we didn't have enough fiber ports in the switch at the time when it was installed. Awesome. The 2240's management IP and service IPs never came back online. The switch reported sending packets to the device, but the filer never replied. I should have had the NOC physically remove the ports and reconnect them, or reconnect them to a different port, but this was about 2AM and I wasn't thinking correctly. The SP was working fine. I could get on the console of the 2240, and it acted like there was no problem. Its partner never thought anything was wrong either, so there was no failover. I was going to force a takeover on its partner, but the warning about a forced takeover that could result in data corruption scared me off. At this point, I'm kind of freaking out. I had just moved, and of course my landline wasn't set up, and I had no cell signal to call Support. And the support site was down/not working (great luck). I figure my best shot at this point to getting the filer back is rebooting the node that thinks it is still primary. I type reboot into the console through the SP and hope for the best. The console goes dark...FOR 45 MINUTES. After 45 minutes, it finally comes back, and all is well. I ALMOST forced a poweroff through the SP...good thing I didn't do that! Why did it take 45 minutes to reboot?? Was it flushing cache to disk? I got really scared thinking this filer wasn't going to come back. Thoughts? OCB setup and filer addition

Hello I've downloaded a demo of OCB 4.1.1.2R1 virtual appliance. When attempting to add a/any filer to OCB using either predefined credentials or new ones, the response OCB comes back with is "Unauthorized". When connecting to the filer via HTTPS in a browser I get "Error 505 - HTTPS not supported". ONTAP 8.1.4P2

Hi Toasters, Has anybody upgraded to ONTAP 8.1.4P2 yet? We were planning an upgrade to 8.1.4P1 and just noticed the availability of P2. It looks like 8.1.4P2 was released on 4/21 (Monday of this week). If you have upgraded to 8.1.4P2, why did you upgrade so quickly and how has your experience been thus far? We generally like to wait a while before upgrading to a recent patch level but some of the issues fixed with 8.1.4P2 seem compelling enough to take the plunge. Hope all is well with everybody! -Phil

Determining what's contributing to fast aggregate growth

Hi all, In the last 36 hours or so we have a 19Tb aggregate that is growing above 18Tb used. Usually the aggregate used level only grows if we grow its volumes. This is different - I was forced to delete snapshots and shrink volumes to get it back under 90%. And in the last 3 hours its back above 91% - used level is climbing 5-10g/minute I so far can not see where the growth is coming from, Aggr snapshot is OFF Ontap 8.1.2 na02> aggr status Aggr State Status Options aggr0 online raid_dp, aggr root, nosnap=on, raidsize=19 64-bit thanks for any tips!

admin access to ntfs permissions

Hi folks, I have run into some ntfs permission problems on a filer running 8.0.1 7-Mode. I am not a Windows domain admin, just the filer admin. I thought that I could map the share using the filer Administrator account like this: share: \\filer.virginia.edu\sharename user: filer.virginia.edu\Administrator I can login just fine, but this account apparently has no special admin privileges. I get permission denied when I try to access folders whose ntfs permissions I suspect are wrong. I also tried filer.virginia.edu\root but login fails. So does this mean that only Windows Domain admins can repair these permissions? And what about this filer option: wafl.nt_admin_priv_map_to_root Must this be "on" ? What do you do if someone revokes all access to a ntfs style folder? Is there any way for a filer admin who is not a Windows domain admin to get unrestricted access to all ntfs security style objects? Can a Windows domain admin even do this? I searched Netapp support but it just says to login as a user "with enough privilege" to change the permissions. Thanks for any help. We almost always use Unix security style.

nfs.authsys.extended_groups_ns.enable?

Hello All, Trying to work around the 16 group limitation of NFS v3 on our 8.1 vfiler and finding references to a "hidden" option "nfs.authsys.extended_groups_ns.enable" that will effectively disable group lookups via auth_sys/RPC and instead look to the filer's AD authentication for a user's group memberships. This is similar in spirit to Isilon's "mapuid" feature and "regular" NFS's -manage-gid switch. But I've tried in regular mode, priv set advanced and priv set diag, and I always get "No such option nfs.authsys.extended_groups_ns.enable" if I try to view or change the option. Am I missing some step to make this hidden double-secret-probationary option available? Randy

snapmirror destination volume is not growing after source

Folks, Please help I have snapmirror setup between 2 qtrees. netapp1:/vol/vol1/q1 --> netapp2/vol/vol1/q1 I was under impression that in 8.2 you can add space to source volume and destination will grow. When I add space or change maxfile on source, the destination remains the same Is my issue due to having just qtree snapmirror? Or I am missing something? fs_size_fixed=off
