data migration

i have 4 filers (330's and a 540) that i need to migrate to one 840. the 840 is brand new with lots of empty 72GB disks and space is not an issue. we were initially going to use snapmirror, however the old machines have volumes of varying sizes, from 120GB on up to 400+. with the 72gb drives, we would have some inefficent raid groups if we did a volume-volume copy. plus i want to shuffle and shift the data around during this move. a "refreshable" copy at the qtree or directory level from old filer to the new is what we need. it looks like ndmpcopy will support this. has anyone ever used this? is this something we can do from the filer CLI?? i didn't see anything at the help prompt. maybe we need to download ndmpcopy and do it from solaris after starting ndmpd on the filers? my downtime would be minimal as well, so a quickly refreshable (ala rdist) copy is needed. any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks Roger D. Humorously enough, since I posted my response to Chris, I have actually received 2 shirts. One came from a vendor (who monitors this forum) whose software I am presently evaluating (thank you Donna and Judy), and the other came from ..... Well, perhaps I had better not say. Mostly, though, it's the shirts. Trade shows and expos really don't have the quality of swag these days; last year's "eXpo" in Dublin (software centre of Europe, and all that) netted me one T-shirt (thanks again, Matt!), a couple of pens, and heaps of squeezy rubber desk toys (just missed out on the Corel inflatable Tux penguins). Even five years ago, you could count on a couple of Microsoft t-shirts (for defacing as appropriate) and the occasional Cool Inflatable Thing. Ah well. FYI VERITAS NetBackup NDMP fully supports (release 3.4 onward) restoring NDMP backups to a different NDMP host (same vendor of course). So far I have a lovely stainless steel travel coffee mug, a wonderous fold up and zip inside-out tote bag, 1 gorgeous t-shirt and a nice warm and fuzzy sweat shirt (blue). I don't even rate a knife... (then again, can I be trusted with sharp objects? Maybe not...) Hey you guys should give netapp a break here. When I started at Arzoon they had already bought 4 netapp filers with a disk shelf each. They paid $626000 total for them. I mean how can you expect Netapp to be handing out shirts, it would kill their profit margin :-) On a side note, anybody buying netapps at auctions? I just saw an F740, 2 disk shelves with 18gb disks and 1 shelf with 36gb disks go for $25000. I got the T-Shirt, but it is falling to bits after a year of frequent use... Maybe it would be a good idea to inlcude some kind of merchandise cost in the support contract that is renewed for the hardware. Adding another $10 on would not be noticed at all... I've received a number of e-mails from disgruntled NetApp employee's and dedicated customers who don't have leather jackets yet. Be aware, all the classes I've gone to have only come with the traditional thin windbreaker, coffee mug, or occasionally a neat-o pen. I did get a nifty screwdriver when I passed the Certified Administrator exam, but that took alot of begging on my part. Obtaining the covetted leather jacket requires a combination of *years* of diligently placed hints to one's sales team, lots of positive feedback to NetApp, and an incredible amount of luck. Please don't start wailing on NetApp for leather jackets though. They'll reposses those of us who have them for creating jealosy and starting a mutiny. Besides, what you really want to work for is the red leather Corvette cover with the NetApp logo on the "hood" portion. The fur-lining makes it sporty and luxurious and it even comes with a handsome carrying bag. -- Jeff

One other thing to consider. I forgot about this but it is something to think about. vol copy does a block for block copy of the data. I'm guessing that you probably have 36GB or 72GB disks on your 840 and 4GB disks on your 330. Since the disk geometries are very different, your data on the 840 may be more fragmented (i.e. not in nice stripes) as a result of this block-by-block copy than it was on your 330. This *could* result in non-optimal performance. Now if your data changes frequenly and you have a decent amount of free space on the F840 volume, WAFL will fix this over time and you may not even see it in the first place. But it is something to be aware of. If you are concerned about this issue, you may want to consider moving the data via something like ndmpcopy which will re-stripe your data on the destination side. Again, both methods work. Both have advantadges and disadvantages (for example, vol copy is usually quicker than ndmpcopy in my experience). What's important is that you make an informed decision on which way you go. There isn't necessarily a right or wrong answer here and many folks (customers and NTAP folks alike) have strong views one way or another (kind of like vi vs. emacs). So pick the way that you think works best for you. Both are good. By using a simple hash function on the incoming packets it distributes them over the available links; if the packets vary in such a way that the hash function distributes them fairly evenly, the load on each link on each link should be roughly equal.
