This is an excerpt of an email that was sent to the management of a company that I'm working with. They had spec'ed F85's for a fairly low performance 10-20Mbits/sec. environment. The main requirement is reliability and ease of use. How does one respond to blatant misrepresentation of a competitors product? barry A few highlights of the comparison: - The F85 is a stripped down, single CPU, low end device with multiple points of failure and a very poor data protection. NetApps service is rated very low by industry experts and they offer next day shipment of parts that the user must install themselves. - The IP4700 is fully redundant, multi-CPU, mid-range device with no single point of failure and hardware based RAID 5 data protection. EMC's world class customer service center has ranked #1 for 6 consecutive years by Gartner Group. Standard 2 year warranty guarantees 4 hours ON SITE w/Parts service by EMC technicians. Plus, our 'call home' proactive maintenance system monitors trends within the system and reports them automatically to our customer service center. Often, EMC technicians will repair a system BEFORE the component actually fails. The 4700 will be configured with 8 drives usable, plus 1 drive for RAID 5 parity and 1 drive for hot swap redundancy. It is scalable all the way to 7000GB (7TB) vs. only 648GB for the F85. The 4700 as configured above is 8RU. In general, the F85 does not scale sufficiently for growth, has poor customer service behind it, has no redundancy, has multiple points of failure, and utilizes a sub-par RAID 0 data protection scheme.

Chris, If I'm not incorrect, the redundant FCAL loop is not used for data transfer unless there is a problem with first loop. In this regard, even if 2nd FCAL card is not in an ideal slot, it would not matter that much. Nevertheless, it is better to avoid it altogether if possible... Hi all, Has anyone been successful in getting filer-mrtg working on Solaris (x86) ?? The rateup binary is for Sparc Solaris and using the latest rateup binary (mrtg 2.9.12) does not seem to work. I keep getting this error: PROBLEM: rateup died from Signal 8 with Exit Value 0 when doing router 'filer1.net.snmp' If this happens all the time, you should probably investigate the cause. :-) Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?? Status so far. I decided to bypass the E0 network port and put another nic out of a pc I had in slot 5. I then tested in single mode and multi mode and everything worked great. I'll try out cluster failover tommorrow. Since I have each nic going to a different network card on my cisco 6509, I decided to hit the netapp from machines on each of the network cards on the cisco and instantly saw traffic on both interfaces. It only maxed at a 100mb thoughput and was distributed between the interfaces on the Netapp. I was hoping to be able to get double the performance. Back in my days as a customer I attended a CIFS conference at Netapp headquarters. After the conference I was offered a beautiful black leather jacket for participating. ARRRGH!! It was something my company would not allow me to accept (government contracts and the like). Now that I work at Netapp I get the occasional shirt, some of them I'd even wear in public. But I often wonder what happened to that jacket I had to turn down.... ndmpcopy is the best data migration method based on the situation you described. ndmpcopy will have to be run from a Unix system. This is basically the migration controller. You can do a rdist style refresh (like a incremental backup), just use the -level 0 option for the initial copy, then you can do -level 1 (up to 9) for your incrementals. Best method is to setup crossover GbE between the filers. data migration

i have 4 filers (330's and a 540) that i need to migrate to one 840. the 840 is brand new with lots of empty 72GB disks and space is not an issue. we were initially going to use snapmirror, however the old machines have volumes of varying sizes, from 120GB on up to 400+. with the 72gb drives, we would have some inefficent raid groups if we did a volume-volume copy. plus i want to shuffle and shift the data around during this move. a "refreshable" copy at the qtree or directory level from old filer to the new is what we need. it looks like ndmpcopy will support this. has anyone ever used this? is this something we can do from the filer CLI?? i didn't see anything at the help prompt. maybe we need to download ndmpcopy and do it from solaris after starting ndmpd on the filers? my downtime would be minimal as well, so a quickly refreshable (ala rdist) copy is needed. any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks Roger D. Humorously enough, since I posted my response to Chris, I have actually received 2 shirts. One came from a vendor (who monitors this forum) whose software I am presently evaluating (thank you Donna and Judy), and the other came from ..... Well, perhaps I had better not say. FYI VERITAS NetBackup NDMP fully supports (release 3.4 onward) restoring NDMP backups to a different NDMP host (same vendor of course).
