I think I understand your problem. Files and directories in the snapshot area are READ-ONLY. You cannot change them at all. You will have to copy the files out of the snapshot area to an active filesystem, then you can manipulate them. Obviously nobody here has really touched one from the statements made. I have and have done direct compare between IP4700 (EMC) and 840 as well as the BlueArc box and it is very refreshing. It is true that some of the feature set is not there yet but they do have NDMP and unlike Netcrap, back-ups online don't crash the server. I have done my own IOmeter tests with various settings using some FreeBSD clients and this thing blows away 840 and IP4700. IP4700 is a joke anyway. Those who are in doubt (as I was) need to check these guys out because they are really onto something huge here. We are talking about eliminating the bottlenecks that exist in ALL server architecture today and reaching the next level of speed. I am not talking out-my-ass here...check 'em out! See for yourslef and don't listen to the dinks from Netcrap or Evil Machine Corporation EMC! If you do manage to get a beta unit as some have, make sure you get the failover cluster because this works much better than anything I have seen yet.... We have a few employees that have left the company and I need to get their data back from their snapshot directories (the original files and folders were deleted as well as the usernames). The volume is a CIFS homedrive setup and if I try to take ownership of the folders under the snapshot directory, I cannot. I also cannot give myself read access to the folder. Has anyone else has this problem? I'm logging in via the administrator account and it still does not work. Thanks in advance for your help.

As with all appliances, the features will be coming slowly but I was told that a cluster upgrade only involved a ten-second outage? Imagine if that was true! The supported Fibre Channel HBAs for the F840 are as follows: Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters: Qlogic X2043A (optical) Qlogic X2045A (2 channel optical) Qlogic X2041A (copper) One F-QIP card in the Spectra 12000 can control 4 drives. In this case, you will need only one X2043A (assuming you want optical) HBA connected to that F-QIP. If you have more than 4 drives in the library then your options are the X2045A or X2043A. You have tremendous flexibility with those platforms. You can go with a single X2043A per filer and daisy chain the busses on the QIP at the Gator, or you can use the X2045A to connect to both FC ports for HA. You can direct connect or go through a fibre switch. In fact, NetApp just announced their OSN FC fabric tape b/u solutions: Press release: http://www.netapp.com/news/press/2001/news_rel_20010508b.html Spectra Logic solution/requirements: http://www.netapp.com/osn/info/gbe/spectralogic.html According to the documentation in the second link, you can only connect a single FC port from the F-QIP in the certified solution. However, you don't have to go with the OSN FC fabric solution. There are other certified solutions, such as the old Gold solution with the Vixel 8100 or direct connect (as I mentioned above). Some considerations: - with current AIT-2 specs you can fully occupy 4 drives (62.4MB/sec compressed total) with a single FC connection at 100MB/sec. However, if you should upgrade to AIT-3 (due out this summer/fall; 124.8MB/sec compressed total), then you will need to connect to both FC ports on the F-QIP to keep the drives busy - AIT advantages vs. DLT: 1. investment protection/backwards compatibility/future development path through AIT-6 (biggest differentiator in my estimation) 2. price/performance 3. density 4. MIC 5. slower media speed ==> less wear & tear; faster/more accurate seeks; better MTBF I'm a sales guy (and therefore obviously biased), but I can sell either one and make the same money off both. When I've done this (during a downtime), I download the o/s onto both boxes and reboot them at the same time. Here is a perl script my coworker wrote that pretty closely mimics the du command. The solutions I saw here yesterday aren't close enough for my taste. Du should print a summary at the end of output. disable NT remote management?

Folks, My Unix, or rather, command-line, bias is showing here, so please bear with me. We're running a mixed-security-style filer, OnTAP-5.3.6R2, also testing 6.1R1. Historically, we've done all management of the filer from a Unix admin host, but we do like for our NT admins to be able to set and/or override permissions for our NT users, so we've done the obligatory two-way mapping in usermap.cfg between the Unix "root" account and the NT domain admin account. In doing so, we've opened what we consider to be a hole in our desired Unix-only management of the filer: It's now possible for our NT admins to create/delete/change shares using Server Manager. We'd really prefer to keep this functionality restricted to a command-line type of interface, so we can keep it under control via scripting, version control, and other types of automation that so far aren't possible using the Windows Server Manager GUI. So, does anyone know how to disable access to Server Manager, and in particular to the ability to create/change shares, but still preserve the ability to manipulate permissions on behalf of our users (via shares previously setup)? I've seen reference to the magic "IPC$" share, and assume that if I could delete that it would prevent remote management from the Windows systems, but I've yet to find a way to accomplish this. Hi all, I have a few directories that are automounted from NetApp F720 Filer to the SUN boxes. The mounted directories are directories under qtrees. .snapshot is accessible under all mountpoints. The issue I have is when doing du to query the directory usage, there will be error messages due to permission level of contents beneath the .snapshot. I would like to get the correct disk usage of my mounted directories. One way to do it is to disable access to the snapshot directories by "vol options volumename nosnapdir on". Is there anyway of getting the correct output of du without accessing the .snapshot directories and not having to turn off and on the options each time, perhaps the right options of du to bypass that particular directories? Or you can try this quick perl script I just hacked out about 5 mins. ago. Feel free to modify to your heart's content. It's called mydu and it takes as an argument the top level directory you want to scan. It just skips ., .., and .snapshot. You might want to turn off failovers prior to the upgrade. Otherwise, the first one you upgrade will upgrade the disk firmware on its partner, and you'll have to use boot disks to do the second one. I am not sure about Keith's suggestion. In theory it should work but since you said that these users from the NT world are equivlent to root and they are still admins in the NT Domain the filer resides in (which they probably are) I believe they would still be able to open server manager on the Filer. I am not positive but I think this could be the case. Also I believe that as long as these NT admins have change access to these directories/files they could be able to share it anyway. Automatic disk fw download

So 6.1+ (or is it 6.0+?) now does automatic downloading of firmware to disks which are inserted into the system that need a firmware update. Are un-cached user reads still blocked by this process? Can disk firmware updates still take up to several minutes (this appears to still be the case)? If yes to both questions above, is anyone concerned that the timing of this user downtime is linked to the actual swapping of the disk drive? That is, if I want to update firmware on a set of new spares at 2:00AM when users are mostly idle, I have to be on site and plugging them in one at a time at 2:00AM. Before I would attach the disks during the day and elect to run the slightly disruptive firmware update late at night from the comfort of my snuggly computer room at home. Anyone poke around with one of these things? Their wording sounds a bit sneaky ("2000 Mbps throughput" when they mean full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet, "inherent" 200 Mbps limitation in other NAS, 1700 Mbps throughput on FC, etc... huh?). Erik, Both the 5.3.x and the 6.x versions of ONTAP are supported with ClearCase. Moving to 6.x release should not cause a problem. I received the following message [nbns_timer:error]: WINS Server [our wins server IP address] is not responding to registration of 10.254.2.2 then the following message every hour: [nbns_timer:error]: No WINS servers are responding; still trying It started when I activated one of the previously unused interfaces on my Quad Fast Ethernet card. The interface in question is attached to a cross-over cable to a sun server, There are no WINS (Or any other microsoft protocol) servers on it. As far as I can see, everything is working correctly. All other interfaces are properly registered with our WINS servers. Everything on the NT side of the network can access the Filer without any problems. RE: snapmirror error

The rule is that due to the filesystems changes in 6.x that if you are SnapMirroring between 5.x and 6.x that the destination *must* be the 6.x filer since the 6.x filer can revert its volumes back to the 5.x filesystem but a 5.x filer cannot understand a 6.x filesystem. It has nothing to do with the fact that you have 840s and 330s, it's the ONTAP version.
