You can use "scopy.exe" from the NT resource kit to get this data, since it uses backup-mode access which bypasses the security on the files. That's the problem, even with root == Administrator I still run into directories(folders) that I cannot access (as root). I don't have a problem with the flexibility, I just want to be able to manage my data from one machine, my admin host. Because Data OnTap is NOT Unix. 'root' is a privileged account, 'Administrator' is a privileged account, some people map root == Administrator if they're really concerned. Allen, The method that I have used in the past which I believe works better than vol copy is the tar command: mount both filesystems to your adminhost: mount tornado:/vol/users /tornado/vol/users mount tempest:/vol/vol0/users /tempest/vol/vol0/users cd to /tornado/vol/users and issue the tar command: tar -cf - . | (cd /tempest/vol/vol0/users ; tar -xvpf -) Doing this should also defrag the filesystems which I don't believe vol copy does...Someone can correct me here if I fell asleep during that part of the class. 'vol copy' can only be used to migrate data between two separate volumes, you cannot dump a remote volume into a Qtree. What you can do, is use ndmpcopy to migrate data from your remote users volume, to the local users Qtree. That would be as quick, or quicker in some cases than vol copy. Your last resort would be using cp with a unix host in the middle..or an NT solution to copy it all. I want to copy all the user directories from torando:/vol/users to tempest:/vol/vol0/users in the easiest and quickest method possible. Both of the filers are connected via gig-ethernet to our main switch so using a filer-to-filer transfer would be the fastest. Do any of you know if the "vol copy" command can be used in this case. Can I specify that the destination is actually a qtree? The documentation for the vol command also says that the destination volume must be offline but that the root volume can't be taken offline. Is this a catch-22? I guess I mis-read your question. To *not* append a backup, use a rewinding device. It should be. It kind of depends on the software you are using. If you're just using our dump and mt commands on the filer, then just use non-rewinding tape devices and dump again. Then when you do finally rewind you can use mt to fast forward past a specific number of EOFs. NetApp F720 -- Password recovery

Anyone know how to reset the password and configuration on an F720, without physically having the boot disks? In the past, I called NetApp support with the same problem, at which point I was given instructions on how to emulate a floppy boot. Unfortunately I misplaced this valuable piece of information. The only part I recall is setting a variable at the "ok"/bios prompt named something like ?floppy-boot?. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. On a pre-6.0 system, you halt to the ok prompt, then do the following: ok setenv floppy-boot? true ok boot Then part way up it will ask floppy booy? Type yes, then you get to the 1-5 menu. 3 is password recovery. Just remember to unsetenv that variable when you are done. Otherwise everytime you reboot, it will stop and ask if you want to floppy boot. This could be a real pain down the line. If you are on a 6.x or later, you can hit CTRL-C at a sepcified time (it will tell you) in the boot process and it will go there automagically. Of course, we ALWAYS recommend having working boot floppies around just in case. It seems that .1Q isn't supported on the 760's onboard 100mbit interface and that only the "FastEnet-10/100 Ethernet Controller" will do it (besides the gige ints). Is this the onboard for the 840, or is it orderable as a separate part#? Since I don't have the extra interfaces to play with, does anyone know if a VIF made up of vlan'able interfaces can also be vlaned? Rolling all of our interfaces into a VIF then VLAN'ing that would be beautiful, but I don't want to go to the trouble having someone persue it if its not currently feasible. Also, does anyone know the difference in the GigE II and GigE III? I know the I was an Alteon, the II is an Intel, how about the III? I was wondering about jumbo framing in a VIF, and noticed the SAG said jumbo frames were available on a trunked GbE II -- should this reead Gb III instead? since the GbE II only does 1500 in standalone, why would the the limitation go away in a vif? Docs also state that mixed MTU's are unsupported. While this makes sense for a multimode trunk, it wouldn't seem to be necessary for a singlemode (ie, the vif adopts the mtu of the active interface). Does Ontap enfore the lowest mtu of all interfaces irregardless of trunk mode? Thanks.. ..kg..

740 ndmp backups

I am backing up a 740 with veritas using the "3 way ndmp" config. i.e. the 740 is backing up via ndmp to an 840 with a dlt8000 directly attached to it. the network is ATM LANE with combo of 1.5mbps and 622mbps. my performance is real bad, like 1 mb/s for a backup. has anyone had any experience with this type of scenario and have any suggestions?? i am going to try the NFS type backup as an experiment but would like to get ndmp to work properly.

Can you please,sir, educate us all on how BlueARC has suceeded in making their disks spin faster than all of the other storage companies? If you do manage to get a beta unit as some have, make sure you get the failover cluster because this works much better than anything I have seen yet....
