It is correct that you are required to use NTFS or MIXED security style if you want to manage your data using NTFS style ACLs. You are not required to use the MIXED security style in order to work with both NT and UNIX data. You can access your data from either Windows or UNIX clients using any security style. FS: F330

Well, after a fruitless search for affordable (at least on my current budget) drives/cannisters for my F330, I've decided to give up and just get rid of it to someone that can use it for spares if nothing else. So: FS: One F330 According to people @ NetApp, this unit was probably a pre-release/ prototype/engineering model. Has a putty/beige front panel instead of a dark blue one, and the cover for the floppy drive area was either never finished or painted silver sometime before I got it. Has 2meg NVRAM (4 if I can find those other two NVRAM SIMMs), one DEC BA350 SESCSI drive shelf (no power supply or drives). No RAM on the motherboard, but we all know where to get that... One of our admins sent this out a couple of days ago... Might be helpful. Hi All, This weekend, I found myself changing the UID of all files which belonged to a particular user in ~40 directories. Since the majority of these directories contained snapshot directories, this task was impossible to complete within the time frame of the weekend without "pruning" the snapshot directory out of the find statement that I used. Since I expect that we will be seeing more and more need to perform this type of task with the merge, I thought that I would share the syntax that I used to accomplish this. Lets assume that I am changing the UID of all files and directories, within the current directory, from 444 to 555 and that I do not want my find command to run through the .snapshot directory. find . -name .snapshot -prune -o -user 444 -exec chown -h 555 {} \;

NDMP is proven and has no problems. It is fast and reliable. If you have a Drive dedicated you can Direct attach the drive which is good and fast and has less overhead. I have a Adic Scalar 100 with AIT II Tape drives connected to Netapp and it works well for me. Backup: Tape Libraries

Hi All, I just bought a F840 with 300gb usable but our growth rate is pretty rapid. One year from today the expected space usable will touch 1.5 TB. I am looking at two products for backup (using Veritas Netbackup 3.4/ data center running on a Sun Solaris 220R) that can handle it properly with good support and technology. This is what I short listed 1. Adic Scalar 100 with AIT II Tape drives. 4 drives( 2 drives for reserved for Netapp and 2 for other stuff ....) 2. Spectra Logic Bulll frog with AIT II but few months down the line I might have to upgrade to new drives which is AIT II (whenever sony releases it ) and/or buy another box. The tape library will be connected to Netapp using LVD running NDMP. Also the second HVD interface will be connected to 220 R which is my media server, master for netbackup. We are a startup and don't want to burn the cash instantly. Please help me with your feedback regarding the products and their support issues, if any, good/bad, will really appreciable. Puneet, We using StoraeTek L 700 with 4 fiber attached 9840 tape drives ( StorageTek claims that their are the fastest on the market (?) ) Tape drives and NetApp and the SunBox 220r running NetBackup 3.4 are connected to a Brocade fiber switch. We have set up 3 zones on the switch with @ tape drives visible to SUN box ( for other backups) and other 2 tapes drives visible only to two NetApps. Runing NDMP backup, excellent throughput, after 6.1R no issues. Since each of the NetApp have a dedicated tape drive in the robot, we are able to back up efficiently through scheduled and user initiated backups. If you want more details I can send you a diagram. Dumb and possibly impossible question

I'm having difficulty accessing NOW just now, so forgive me if a) this is on there or b) it's a stupid question. I'm debugging a client-side problem, using pktt trace from the NetApp. To assist with this I want to be able to go from the file handles I which I see in the pktt trace to a filename on the client. Normally I would try to to ls -i on the client to find an inode and work from there, but I'm not sure if that makes sense in a NetApp context. Any pointers? Experiences with running filers over WAN

Hello, I wonder if anyone out there has any experiences with running filers over WAN. We are thinking about placing a filer about 600 Km from the users in a move to centralize the storage. The users would be connected via dual 622 Mbps ATM connection so the transfer speed should be OK but the question is if the latency would be acceptable and also how many users could you usefully have at the remote site. The only downside to SnapMirror is it isn't free. But do you really need "infinite incrementals" I mean you should be able to do it with minimal downtime with only a few levels. Even if you did 1 incremental per day for a week before doing the final incremental with downtime, you should be able to fit within 10 levels of incrementals. How long do you intend to strech it out? Just curious. Someone (sorry, deleted message) pointed out that perl's chown() call probably follows symlinks, and that is indeed the case. dear all, Anyone can give me some idea how to upgarde from F740 Cluster running 5.3.1 to F820 cluster? I have currently a F740c. one have 2 diskshelf and 2 vol with it. The other one have one diskshelf and one vol. All using 36G harddisk. I need to plan for an upgarde from F740c to F820c. I don't know whether upgarde to 6.x first b4 move to F820c will help. Sudden CIFS performance degradation

We're running OnTap 5.3.6 on an F760, serving both NFS and CIFS. It ran fine since we upgraded to 5.3.6 around 10 months ago, until early this week, when we began experiencing severely degraded CIFS performance. In some cases, CIFS times out and the client experiences data loss. What should I be looking for? We had a similar problem with our other filer a few months ago, but never determined the cause; we ended up solving the problem by upgrading to OnTap 6. In that case it doesn't sound like the app is trying to set Unix security. Yes, the filer maps the UID to a SID, but as described in the FAQ, you can't set Unix security in an NTFS qtree no matter what NT user you map to. Assuming you've unsuccessfully tried to use the security troubleshooter to diagnose this, open a case with Netapp and get them a packet trace, along with the exact permissions of the files in question and the "wcc -dvv" output. Alternatively, if it is a standard application, give them a full description of how to reproduce this. Why? "Any attempts to set UNIX security will fail in an NTFS qtree. Some UNIX applications fail to operate properly if they cannot set security. If you need to run such applications you must use a Mixed or UNIX qtree. Our configuration is 760 running 6.1R1 When I try to save a file from a Unix/Solaris application to a ntfs qtree/directory I get access denied. Using an xterm I can access the directory as myself and rm, touch, vi any file, just cant do the same form a Solaris application ie...file manager and 3rd party Unix apps. Moving data from one volume to another

Hello all, We have a F720 filer where the data from one volume needs to be copied to another volume in the same filer. From the previous discussions on this mailing list, it appears that NDMPcopy 'infinite incremental' feature is the solution which provides the shortest possible downtime. What I would like to ask more experienced NetApp admins is whether there are known caveats in issuing something like: jndmpcopy filer:/vol/vol1 filer:/vol/vol2 -sa root:<passwd> -da root:<passwd> -level i Data ONTAP version is 6.01R1, and there is ~ 43 GB of data that needs to be moved. Any feedback on positive/negative experiences with this procedure is highly appreciated. Robert
