Or you can run showmount from a client and give the server name, such as UNIX# showmount -a filer BUT PLEASE NOTE THIS CAVEAT: There is no reliable way to tell who all your clients are at any given time. NFS is stateless. Clients can come and go and they don't always leave nicely and do a clean umount so the entries tend to stay in /etc/rmtab for much longer than they should. If you want to see who the top 5 or so clients are, you can always use the option nfs.per_client_stats and then nfsstat -l and you'll get an idea of who your busiest clients are and presumably they are still mounted. The only showmount option that I have found to be truly reliable is the -e options which shows you what is exported from a particular box. DOT 5.x -> 6.x RAID/WAFL upgrade ?'s

Okay, can someone help explain to me what happens to volumes between Data ONTAP 5.x and 6.x with respect to the upgrade steps and times. In our situation, we're vol copy'ing data from 5.3.7R3 to 6.1R1. The first annoyance is that the destination filer (6.1R1) says the following: Mon Jun 11 15:57:13 PDT [turbine: rshd_0:error]: Filesystem version mismatch for destination volume vol2_2, reverting the version and aborting transfer. A console message will be displayed when this revert is complete. The fabled console message it describes never happens. Even so, please just send me a message that I can use syslog.conf to route to whichever logging facility I please. Sending something to the console only without possibility of configuring it to go somewhere else makes me very sad since I'm not going to be watching the console for hours at a time. Does anyone know how long the revert process takes? Our next problem is that now that we've vol-copied, the destination volume wants to upgrade itself. Again, does anyone know what the steps are and how long they take to upgrade? I found the following information in "vol status -c": turbine*> vol status -c Volume Checksum style Checksum status vol0_1 zoned Checksums active root zoned Checksums active vol0_2 zoned Checksums active vol2_2 zoned Checksums initializing: RAID upgrade phase 1 (of 2) in progress vol2_1 zoned Checksums initializing: WAFL upgrade in progress (BTW, wouldn't alphanumeric sorting be nice in output like this?) So is it the case that we have 2 RAID upgrade phases and then a WAFL upgrade? Are there more or less steps and what order do they come in? How long does each one take? Assuming the time is a question of the amount of data and beef in the server, we're talking about F840's working on volumes that are about 500GB big with 200-400GB of data on them. NTFS Formatting

I have a filer with UNIX and NT data. I want to move via ndmp to a larger filer. In preparation for the data move I read somewhere that in order for NT data to maintain security permissions, the destination must be NTFS formatted. Is this true, and how do you perform this if the host is a Unix machine but other NT servers are available. Also how would UNIX data fit on an NTFS format. Any help is greatly appreciated. It is correct that you are required to use NTFS or MIXED security style if you want to manage your data using NTFS style ACLs. You are not required to use the MIXED security style in order to work with both NT and UNIX data. You can access your data from either Windows or UNIX clients using any security style. Well, after a fruitless search for affordable (at least on my current budget) drives/cannisters for my F330, I've decided to give up and just get rid of it to someone that can use it for spares if nothing else. So: FS: One F330 According to people @ NetApp, this unit was probably a pre-release/ prototype/engineering model. Has a putty/beige front panel instead of a dark blue one, and the cover for the floppy drive area was either never finished or painted silver sometime before I got it. Has 2meg NVRAM (4 if I can find those other two NVRAM SIMMs), one DEC BA350 SESCSI drive shelf (no power supply or drives). No RAM on the motherboard, but we all know where to get that... One of our admins sent this out a couple of days ago... Might be helpful. Hi All, This weekend, I found myself changing the UID of all files which belonged to a particular user in ~40 directories. Since the majority of these directories contained snapshot directories, this task was impossible to complete within the time frame of the weekend without "pruning" the snapshot directory out of the find statement that I used. Since I expect that we will be seeing more and more need to perform this type of task with the merge, I thought that I would share the syntax that I used to accomplish this. Lets assume that I am changing the UID of all files and directories, within the current directory, from 444 to 555 and that I do not want my find command to run through the .snapshot directory. find . -name .snapshot -prune -o -user 444 -exec chown -h 555 {} \;

NDMP is proven and has no problems. It is fast and reliable. If you have a Drive dedicated you can Direct attach the drive which is good and fast and has less overhead. I have a Adic Scalar 100 with AIT II Tape drives connected to Netapp and it works well for me. Backup: Tape Libraries

Hi All, I just bought a F840 with 300gb usable but our growth rate is pretty rapid. One year from today the expected space usable will touch 1.5 TB. I am looking at two products for backup (using Veritas Netbackup 3.4/ data center running on a Sun Solaris 220R) that can handle it properly with good support and technology. This is what I short listed 1. Adic Scalar 100 with AIT II Tape drives. 4 drives( 2 drives for reserved for Netapp and 2 for other stuff ....) 2. Spectra Logic Bulll frog with AIT II but few months down the line I might have to upgrade to new drives which is AIT II (whenever sony releases it ) and/or buy another box. The tape library will be connected to Netapp using LVD running NDMP. Also the second HVD interface will be connected to 220 R which is my media server, master for netbackup. We are a startup and don't want to burn the cash instantly. Please help me with your feedback regarding the products and their support issues, if any, good/bad, will really appreciable. Puneet, We using StoraeTek L 700 with 4 fiber attached 9840 tape drives ( StorageTek claims that their are the fastest on the market (?) ) Tape drives and NetApp and the SunBox 220r running NetBackup 3.4 are connected to a Brocade fiber switch. We have set up 3 zones on the switch with @ tape drives visible to SUN box ( for other backups) and other 2 tapes drives visible only to two NetApps. Runing NDMP backup, excellent throughput, after 6.1R no issues. Since each of the NetApp have a dedicated tape drive in the robot, we are able to back up efficiently through scheduled and user initiated backups. If you want more details I can send you a diagram. Dumb and possibly impossible question

I'm having difficulty accessing NOW just now, so forgive me if a) this is on there or b) it's a stupid question. I'm debugging a client-side problem, using pktt trace from the NetApp. To assist with this I want to be able to go from the file handles I which I see in the pktt trace to a filename on the client. Normally I would try to to ls -i on the client to find an inode and work from there, but I'm not sure if that makes sense in a NetApp context. Any pointers? Experiences with running filers over WAN

Hello, I wonder if anyone out there has any experiences with running filers over WAN. We are thinking about placing a filer about 600 Km from the users in a move to centralize the storage. The users would be connected via dual 622 Mbps ATM connection so the transfer speed should be OK but the question is if the latency would be acceptable and also how many users could you usefully have at the remote site. In my experience, the quickest way to move whole volumes within a filer is vol copy. If you need incremenal support, then SnapMirror also works great. The only downside to SnapMirror is it isn't free. But do you really need "infinite incrementals" I mean you should be able to do it with minimal downtime with only a few levels. Even if you did 1 incremental per day for a week before doing the final incremental with downtime, you should be able to fit within 10 levels of incrementals. How long do you intend to strech it out? Just curious. We had a similar problem with our other filer a few months ago, but never determined the cause; we ended up solving the problem by upgrading to OnTap 6. Someone (sorry, deleted message) pointed out that perl's chown() call probably follows symlinks, and that is indeed the case. However, there is a very simple workaround for that: find dir ! -type l -print | mychown.c Also, as someone pointed out, if you use chown -R you also want to use -h (if your unix flavor supports that option) to change the owner of the symlink itself rather than what the symlink points to. > > If you run a separate chown process for each file, yes, that will be > very slow.
