Replace controller

Hi all! In our environment, we have a FAS2020a and a FAS2020. FAS2020a had one controller bad, we installed a replacement we had, installed old the CF CARD, but system won’t boot, it says there is no disks for root volume. That is because all disks are assigned to old controller. How could we assign those disks to new controller without losing any data? Thanks in advance Camillo

7-mode / cDOT Co-existence?

Have searched previous discussions on this, but seems like this is a bit of a moving target. Apologies if this has already been addressed to death. Considering FAS purchases now that N-Series is going away. Wanting to pull the plug and go cDOT on the new systems, but concerned about interoperability with the N-Series filers still on 7-mode. Biggest concern: Can I SnapVault from 7-mode to cDOT? It sounds like there's a way to do this via a migration tool, but less clear if regular 'ol SnapVault and SnapMirror work between the two platforms. Really hoping it works as the co-existence option will make our lives a lot easier. Ray

Balance monitoring Windows clients

Hi all, The documentation states that Balance needs a Windows administrator-level account. Will _only_ an administrator-level account do? By comparison, on a 'nix machine it doesn't actually need complete sudo/root access. What to do with 4 x 3020s and 9 Shelves?

Company closes and sells off their hardware…..before releasing the shelves they move around the drives in the shelves (for “security”) so now they cannot boot or more importantly get any license info to reinstall OnTap…. Anyway around this? I hate to trash all this hardware.

WideLink SymLinks on CDOT

All, Since you were all so helpful last time with regards to my TSM questions (and thanks for that!) I have run into another problem I'd like to pick your collective brains over. We have a CIFS only environment running CDOT and have a requirement to provide Directory SymLinks in a users home directory. I've managed to find fairly decent documentation on how to do this on 7-Mode systems but it seems lacking for CDOT. We use to use mklink (or some other powershell hackery) to create the symlinks but this doesn't work when talking to the new CIFS SVM. Has anyone managed this? Do you have a recipe we can follow to implement this? I've managed to create the Symlink translation entry like so: PS > Get-NcCifsSymlink CifsServer ShareName UnixPath CifsPath Locality ---------- --------- -------- -------- -------- REMOTE_SERVER REMOTE_SHARE /vol04/USERNAME/SymLink-Src/ / widelink But I think the next step is to create a 'real' unix type symlink on /vol04/USERNAME/SymLink-Src/ however I can't see how to do this. The file-create-symlink OnTAPI API call doesn't (seem?) to exist for CDOT (yet?). The only other possible option as I see it is to configure NFS and then mount the drive over NFS to create this symlink but I would prefer to avoid this as we don't have a requirement for NFS on these shares currently. snapvault memory allocation error

Hi Everyone, Over the weekend we had a snapvault backup fail with memory allocation errors on the snapvault destination. This error occurred twice on the same volume, then hasn't come back. Can not allocate memory. (memory limit reached) (Cannot allocate memory) I run snapmirror and snapvault on all our volumes, but do it one operation at a time - NO concurrent snapvault or snapmirror operations. I search NOW and didn't come up with anything. This occurred on this particular volume twice in a row (6 hours apart - backups run every 6hours), not on any other volumes. This volume is 410GB with 900k inodes - not even close to our biggest volumes. So this error is not related to size (capacity or num inodes), but seems specific to this volume. vFiler DR in 7Mode vs Cluster Mode?!?

And this is often associated with VMware SRM functionalities. Question. Single-file Snaprestore Causing Performance Impact?

Hi all; Running 8.1.2P4 in 7-Mode on an IBM N6240. We initiated a couple of single-file snaprestores which ran for 15+ hours on some busy SATA-based aggregates). During that time, we experienced intermittent issues connecting to the NFS services on this filer. Issues would clear up after a while (minutes or tens of minutes) and then return an hour or so later. We killed the snaprestores during one of the outages and observed a full recovery of the NFS service. It may have been coincidental. Anyone aware of snaprestore (specifically, single-file restores) causing cascading impacts? OnCommand doesn't show any additional spike in CPU, disk activity, etc.... Thanks, Ray

First time CIFS setup

We are an NFS via vfilers shop, but had our first client request for a CIFS share. I’ve setup a CIFS vfiler using the local account/password option. cifs-vf-01@irt-na06> cifs shares Name Mount Point Description HOME /vol/media1/home Default Share everyone / Full Control We can map the share, but get “the disk is write protected” when attempting a copy to the mapped drive. The error the client receives when trying to map the drive is "The account is not authorized to log in from this station” I’d like to resolve both our “write protected” and the client’s “not authorized” errors - why are these errors if the HOME share is created as “everyone / Full Control” ? Any advice/links appreciated thanks, Fletcher.

ndmpcopy from netapp to oracle zs3?

I am trying to do an ndmpcopy from a 7m 8.1.4P1 to an Oracle ZS3. I am not even sure if this is possible, but It authenticates successfully then dies with a network communication error. Looking at a pkkt capture, the green is the netapp and the red is the zs3. Verifying nfo status for interfaces

Greetings, We have a 7-mode, 8.1.2P4 cluster with several interfaces configured. There is no mention of nfo in the rc file. We need to down an interface for an old subnet but need to verify this won't cause a cluster failover. I haven't found what the default behavior for an interface is if it is not specified. I assume it defaults to the network options listed below. The takeover options are set for this: cf.takeover.on_network_interface_failure on cf.takeover.on_network_interface_failure.policy all_nics (same value in local+partner recommended) This seems to tell me that all_nics have to fail before a failover would occur. It also looks like I could run a manual ifconfig command and apply the -nfo to be on the safe side. I'd like to get a sanity check that downing the one interface won't cause a failover and that a manual change to an interface using -nfo would fix it anyway. A few years back the Oracle ZFS storage had a feature called Shadow Copy. It was a pretty good method to move data from any NFS storage into the ZFS storage. Basically, you would create a new volume on the ZFS storage and point it at the source. In the background it would copy data to the ZFS storage and proxy any requests through to the old storage for data that was not yet migrated to ZFS. This was how we migrated a number of Oracle databases with minimal downtime. This only worked for NFS. CIFS or block storage still had to be copied at the client level. --Brian

FAS2040 NVMEM Battery

Is the FAS2040 Battery the same as FAS2020? I've been told they are the same, but as i do have them both, i checked on FAS2020 the code is 271-00010 and on the FAS2040 the code is 271-00024. I need to be sure, because i need to replace the FAS2040 battery and i am only able to find the part #271-00010 (FAS2020). A friend told me it is supposed to be the same, but i need to be sure. Accounting quota performance question.

Greetings, We have some 6290 7-mode clusters running 8.1.2P4. How abusive is having an user accounting quota on a head with say 40 file systems? Some file systems have over 100m inodes in use. I could start turning them on one at a time, but I'd like to know the potential impact first. Recover access on FAS2040

Hello all! The scenario, i am remotely accessing a FAS2040. Have accessed the BMC on controller B, and powered on the system, everything went fine until my connection droped before i hitted CTRL+G to return to BMC, now i lost the connection and cannot connect back to the BMC. I have access to BMC on controller A, is it possible to remotelly gainback access to controller B? I do know the BMC ips. Thanks in advance.

CIFS Questions

Hi all, I have a couple questions around CIFS on my 7-mode NetApp (running 8.1.3): 1. Is there a way to disable NetApp from creating 8.3 filenames on a CIFS/FTP share? Or, if there isn't, is there a way to hide the 8.3 filenames? 2. Is there any way to make FTP folder paths on a NetApp CIFS share not be case sensitive? Many thanks in advance! Cheers, Aaron

conversion to cDOT

Hi Toasters, I am getting different stories about whether it is possible to convert an existing 7-mode install of 8.2.1 into cluster mode. This HA pair has only the config that the NetApp SE installed as part of his QA when the system was first setup. We have done nothing with the machine, in particular it has no data on it. Can we convert to cDOT? Is it documented anywhere? WIll I have a supported system if I do that? I hoping to hear from some of you that have experience with this issue. Move all data

Hello all, right now we are using a FAS2020a with no external shelfs, only the internal disks. We have it configured for CIFs, iSCSI, between others... We recently discontinued the use of a FAS2040 with a external shelf, and i want to know if it is possible to move all data and configurations from the 2020a to the 2040. If so, how to do it? Very slow snapvault run on a CIFS share

Hi Everyone, We have a system built around several IBM N-Series N3220 (FAS2240-2) filers. When I run snapvault of our biggest cifs share it is running 9-10hours. The users are running a pgm that is deleting lots documents out of this share. A week ago the share had +32m inodes. Today it has 23m inodes. Just yesterday they deleted 1m inodes. During the entire SV run the disks on the prod filer head are Running at 96-100% utilization. This is clearly hammering the disks and they are a big bottleneck. During normal activity on this share usually runs SV in a few min to an hour. My question: Does this sound reasonable? Does a 9-10hr SV run pounding disks at >96% util for a high delete rate in the share? Thanks Rick ============== = detail info ============== All heads are running Data ONTAP Release 8.1.2P1 7-Mode. The main Prod filer is a dual head (HA) with one head dedicated to FCP/luns, while the other head is dedicated to CIFS shares. Data OnTap 8.1 7-mode and Windows 8.1?

Hello All, Is anyone familiar with any issues between DOT 8.1 7-mode CIFS/SMB and Windows 8.1? Users are reporting error pop-ups when they try to access but so far all I have to go on are pretty generic Windows squawk boxes. Randy
