Yes SMB=CIFS and the Linux box solution will work in his environment, but if he doesn't have any Unix expertise, what sense does it make to add Linux into his data center? Who would admin the box? In keeping with the NetApp approach to life, simple is good. Stick with what you know -- NT. Try winzip. You could probably write some scripts to largely automate the process. You could use a Linux box to mount the filer with NFS or SMB. Create a file that would be used as the compressed (or encrypted) filesystem on the filer. Use a special mount program to do the compression and to mount the filesystem. Then export the filesystem from the Linux box as NFS and/or SMB. I was told that there is no native tool on the filer that compresses data on the volumes (like you would on a hard drive) Is there any 3rd party utils that anyone has encountered that can do this? 34F+ & 36F impact on snapmirror

All, Had an original F740 with two full shelves of 36F disks. Added a new F740 (for snapmirror purpose) with the same configuration but it came with the new 34F+ disks. Configured the new filer with the identical volume configuration for snapmirror. Original filer was running 5.3.7r3 while the new filer is running 6.1r1 because of the requirement of 34F+ disks. My issues are: (1) Anybody has the information on the "right-size" of the 34F+ disk? My understanding is that 36F has 34,500 KB. The yellow flyer says that 34F+ has lesser capacity but that does not help very much, how much lesser? (2) Because of the lesser capacity (I guess), the target volume can not be snapmirrored. I have to rearrange the volume configuration making the target volumes by one disk more than the source volume, only after that the snapmirror went through. The intention of the snapmirror is for disaster recovery. In the event that the source filer is not available, the target filer will be changed from snapmirrored status to regular volume. When the original source filer is ready for operation again, what is the best practice to move the data back? (3) Snapmirror back on the reverse direction would not work because now the original source filer volume is smaller than the original target volume. (4) Would vol copy falls into the same restriction of target volume has to be equal or larger? In my case, they could not be equal because of one is using 36F and the other is using 34F+. SV: legato netapp client

Hi Peter, We are using the legato netapp client on our filers, and have been doing it for a while - primarely because it then acts like any other client to our Legato Server. Hi, This is resolved in Data Ontap 6.x when we added Qtree metadata support to dump & restore which NDMPcopy utilizes. In 6.x the destination creates qtrees rather than directories. If so then your suggestion would work and the filer would exist nicely with MSCS. If there isn't a resource DLL then one could still use it with an application under the control of MSCS but the filer access (online, offline, etc) wouldn't be under MSCS control.

User triggered autosupport

Has anyone ever had a problem with manual autosupports? (filer> option autosupport.doit subject) If I do a manual autosupport from the box it hangs up and does not respond (NT Shares, Telnet, RSH) for about 5 to 10 minutes the only connection that works id the Serial / Console port then the filer comes back on the network by itself. Anyone seen anything like that before? I have an F840 running OnTAP 6.0.1r3 with only CIFS installed. Dave M. Kennard.

Win2K Sync Question

Anyone noticed any problems with a Win2K Pro workstation trying to syncronize drives to a filer. I have an F840 running DOT6.1 and several people get sync errors. Legato Cluster has supported NT4/W2K since 1998. Latest version does registry update monitoring. I've done this in an Active-Active mode, but it doesn take some careful thought in architecting the data patterns, might not be for the faint-at-heart. First thing I'll say is that I know almost nothing about the way Windows NT or 2000 works, and when someone tries to explain it to me, I always wonder why a simpler and more direct UNIX-like approach wasn't used. But anyway... :) Is anyone using Netapps as a data storage backend for MSCS-aware applications? I've read the white paper on SQL Server 7 and MSCS at http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3084.html, but do those principles apply to any clustered application? I read Microsoft's own MSCS FAQ, and although it starts off saying it needs a shared storage backend, it goes on to mention only shared SCSI devices... nothing about FibreChannel or CIFS. It also needs a shared "quorum" disk, which somehow allows MSCS to determine which servers in the cluster are down (but the FAQ doesn't say how exactly the negotiation is done). More specifically, has anyone deployed the e-Assist suite of CRM applications on filer backends? The vendors says they use MSCS for clustering, and recommend local RAID storage for all the servers. Given that they say 35 dual-CPU servers are needed to handle 1000 users (ridiculous, but that's another story), I'm not particularly thrilled to have to maintain locally-attached storage for all of them, and I would rather take advantage of the existing pair of F740s. Solaris as ndmp server?

I am trying to migrate some data from a NetApp to a SAN box and would like to use ndmpcopy from the filer to the Solaris server instead of rsync. Hi Jan, I think this is a problem with setting up the NDMP connection. First... is matterhorn reachable from the client where Veritas is installed? Try the ping command. Next, could you verify that the password for user root on the filer is indeed the same as what is registered with veritas? If not, reconfigure Veritas set_ndmp_attr. To help debug further, run the command "ndmpd debug 50" on the filer console. Now run the set_ndmp_attr -verify again. See if you get any ndmp logs printed on the console. If you do, the NDMP connection/authentication is fine. And we can proceed to the robot. Let me know if you need more help or run into more trouble :-). Thanks, Amol. Qtree Utilization Alerts

I am looking for a tool to send alerts in the form of email or NT alerts when a Qtree reaches some threshold or percentage (say 80%) of it's quota. I want to be able to extract or construct the alert only for certain Qtrees. Our Qtree naming standard makes it simple to identify an NTFS Qtree. I've thought about automatically generating the Qtree report and writing a tool to parse the information out of the report and generate any alerts needed. Any tools or suggestions are welcome. We have similar performance problems with the Legato NetApp client. The NetApp's that we're backing up this was are old F520's, and we get no more that about 1.2MB/sec during backups (but get easily over 6MB/s during regular heavy I/O). Looking at mrtg graphs of the filer during backups has shown the problem: CPU. While these Legato dumps are running, the CPU is held about 95% busy! Since we only use Unix/NFS mounts off the filers, we're about to start backing up by NFS mounts to our backups host. We'll try ndmp at a later stage. I authorosize access to the NDMP host as follows: set_ndmp_attr -auth matterhorn root after which I'm asked to give me the password (twice). The command set_ndmp_attr -list suggest that every thing went okay Record Type: Authentication NDMP Server: matterhorn Username : root Password : <registered> Record Type: Robotic Information NDMP Server: matterhorn Device : spt0 Controller : 5 SCSI Id : 1 SCSI LUN : 0 But real verification fails: set_ndmp_attr -verify matterhorn Connecting to host "matterhorn" as user "root"... We use a similar configuration with HP servers (3 machines in an MC/ServiceGuard cluster), and I can say that ORACLE locks database and control files, so I don't think it's possible that 2 different machines open the same database. BUT, one problem we get is that : - When a node running ORACLE database is down (hardware problem for example), files stay locked - It's then impossible to start the same database on an other node. The only standard issue is to restart the first node so that locks are free (but this issue is not availabe if the node has a real hardware problem!!!) Why not configure the aix servers as a hacmp cluster and define the oracle instance as a resource group? With nfs mounts it only takes a couple of minutes to complete the failover and bring up oracle on the backup server. It seems most people on this list are using NDMP for backup of their filers. However, I would like to avoid that if I can. But we can put the continue buttons somewhere on the top and not make "hidden" where you have to scroll down. Great feedback and we will look into that pronto."
