Hi all, Forgive me if I asked a naive question. I believe there should be a user who can access filer's ndmp service. But I can not see such configurations on filer's ndmp options, is any user on filer ok for ndmp backup use? And on Legato networker, where i can specify the ndmp port which supposed to be 10000? Things like the restore making better use of blocks since it gets to re-write your data from scratch, etc. As far as verifying ndmpcopy, remember that ndmpcopy is just a native ONTAP dump/restore so any method you would use to verify your backups would also apply here. Most of them are not fun like what has been suggested of comparing file by file. NetBackup with large Indexes.

Hi, We use Veritas Netabackup 3.4 to backup - on Solaris platform - Netapp / EMC in our site. The index size is growing to over then 70 Gb tape capacity. As far as we know the DbBackup ( the command that backup the index ) doesn't know to backup more then one tape capacity. One of the solutions is to backup the index using ufsdump ( it works ) to more the one tape. Does someone have any solution for this problem using the official veritas tool ( or other ) ? CA NDMP platform announcement

They're calling it BrightStor. Haven't had a chance to look at it in detail yet, but cursory look shows it supports NDMP b/u to direct attached tape library and 3-way filer-to-filer (but apparently not filer to server or ethernet-enabled tape library), as well as supporting EMC TimeFinder, EMC FastTrax and IBM mainframe (3494). http://www.ca.com/press/caworld2001/brightstor/index.htm Any beta-testers/early-adopters? DFM is a very nice multi-filer management tool and is tightly integrated with the filers. It has lots of useful reports, especially for multi-filer sites that are trying to find a chunk of free space or figure out how much they can expand certain filers. DFM will not do two of the things Jay asked for though - it will not tell you the type of data using the space, nor will it tell you which users are putting it there. It is more designed to be a multi-filer management tool than a storage management tool. Highground will (somewhat) do what Jay is looking for. He may also consider looking into BMC. They bill their storage management tools as being "Application specific" - that is they have a capability of mapping certain applications (like Oracle) to data usage. Like Highground, BMC has an agent-based architecture; however, I'm not sure of Highground's support for "Tier 1 storage". MSCS Exchange cluster and NetApp CFO cluster

Anybody out there running Exchange 5.5 on NT 4.0 SP6a with two-node, Active/Passive MSCS cluster and the information store on a NetApp CFO cluster (forgive my multiple instances of redundancy)? A more practical suggestion: Industrial strength electric drill. No joke. This leaves something like 90% of the data still accessible. If you're at this level of security I'd recommend chipping the drives into small pieces or immersing them in molten metal in a forge or mashing them beyond recognition with a 20 lb sledge. That last technique is even kinda fun. Have a party. In normal use, it is impossible to view the previous contents of a file once it and all snapshots containing it are deleted. WAFL zeroes every block before allocating it to a file, so you can't create a file and write to the millionth byte in the expectation of seeing a meg of info from deleted files the way you can on many other filesystems. The reason I suggested Highground is because it has the ability to monitor "soft" quotas. It wont enforce quotas on the filer, but it will e-mail users when they are close to reaching their quota. As far as I know, the Data Fabric Manager doesnt have this functionality. I guess my question is how different were the results? A couple of percentage different is normal in dump/restore situations, which ndmpcopy is. Things like the restore making better use of blocks since it gets to re-write your data from scratch, etc. As far as verifying ndmpcopy, remember that ndmpcopy is just a native ONTAP dump/restore so any method you would use to verify your backups would also apply here. Most of them are not fun like what has been suggested of comparing file by file. Mount the two fs's, cd into the root of your original fs (for arguments sake /mnt/orig) and then run a find over it. Let's say /mnt/new is the new fs: find . -type f -xdev -exec cmp {} /mnt/new/{} \; slip in a -print if you want to be sure it's examining everything along the way. I think you may need gnu find to do this, as not all vendor finds allow you to substitute in multiple instances of {}. I'm sure something reasonable can be worked-up in perl in about 10 lines, in an afternoon too. You could also use two separate finds to assemble two lists of checksums or md5 hashes and then compare them relatively simply with the various text utils unix provides. As for why they're different, I'm fairly sure a number of reasons have been mentioned over the years and are all in the archive or on NOW.
