Screening File Types

I'm wanting to keep our CIFS clients from writing certain file extensions to our filers via their mapped drives. Does anyone know of any NT based products that will do this real-time? I really don't want to resort to running scripts to delete them each week. Cheers...Paul.

We currently run 3 Exchange environments on filers, one has a 90GB information store, one has a 36GB information store, and one has a 20GB information store. The Filers have dual GigE NICs running Multi VIF'd to Cisco Catalyst 6509 switches. The Exchange servers have single GigE NICs. The Exchange servers are 6 way Pentium III 700MHz 2MB XEON boxes with 2GB RAM. The 90GB information store is our Home Office. They abuse email like there is no tomorrow, so it's pretty active. If you take the time to set your environment up correctly using SnapRestore, you don't need to worry about M$ support. We've recovered from ourselves (Never let an unskilled admin play with Mailbox Manager), without any issues. We've had one environment up since last summer without any issues. SQL Performance

Hi everybody! Are there any folks out there using SQL 7 on a Filer? I'm looking to see what you found as far as performance goes. We just moved 2 production databases to our F840 last night. We noticed that the copies to and from the database are incredibly fast. However, most queries other than the most basic have slowed down. In some cases it's as much as 400%. The Filer has 2 OC-3 ATM links and the database server has 1. We have a few databases that will be adversely affected by that kind of performance decrease. Are there any tips or tricks out there that might help other than going GigE? Any other observations? Thank you!! disk scrub time

hi all, normally the disk scrub starts on sunday 1 a.m. cause of the running ndmp-backup, the filer counldn't finish the scrub within the default deadline time of 6 h. there are 4 volumes on the filer and just 1 finished the scrub. the other get stopped like following: Sun Jul 8 01:00:00 CES [fsup02: raid_scrub_admin:notice]: Beginning disk scrubbing... Sun Jul 8 07:00:01 CES [fsup02: consumer:notice]: Disk scrub stopped because the scrub time limit was exceeded. We recently moved about 400GB of data from a NT4 file server to a Win2k file server using a tool from Fastlane. The tool also had a NetApp proxy, where you would install the software on a third system, independent of the first server and the filer. Not sure if it would work for two filers, but it might be worth a try. It would beat the backup and restore route, and then trying to hack the permissions with the cacls or subinacls tools. Ugh. We had a ton of local groups, and a few local accounts, that were all migrated pretty painlessly. Drop an email back if you want more details on the product. The only non-slam-dunk about it is NTFS local groups. Background: We use the Microsoft recommended method of assigning rights to filesystems, that is UGLR (phonetic == Uglier). Users belong to ... Global groups, which belong to ... Local groups, which are assigned access to ... Resources. The problem is that Local groups have a non-global SIDs between machines. That is, each filer assigns its own local SID's to local groups in its /etc/lclgroups.cfg on the root volume. That SID gets moved with the ACL data to the destination, but the destination machine can't resolve its membership with its local groups. The traditional approach to fixing this is using a tool from Aelita or subinacl to traverse the entire destination filesystem (post-migration) and replacing any occurrence of the old SID with that of a new SID for a local group on the destination filer. This is all fine and good, but could take forever. -------- THE IDEA -------- Here's my idea on a better way to do this. Simply shutdown CIFS on the destination machine pre-move and create analogous local group entries with SIDs that match the source. NetApp tech support might not like the idea too much, but it would mean that the same global groups would belong to that SID and thus no filesystem traversing or ACL modification! Ta Da! Unfortunately, we are copying data from more source machines than there are destination machines and we are not copying data per filer - that is some data from filer1 will go to filerA, some to filerB, etc. This means that for my scheme to work, we'd need globally unique local group SID's. Since it appears that ONTAP starts assigning local group SID's at 65536 sequentially, we have lots of conflicting local groups with those lower numbered SID's. To still use the original concept, I had the idea of copying the membership of all the groups on the source filers into new local groups with globally unique SID's. Then run one of the ACL tools to create analogous ACE's for the new group wherever it finds the old one. (This is all done pre-migration) After the migration we simply create local groups on the destination machine with SID's of the new, analogous rights granted group. Has anyone tried something like this before?? Can anyone see any problems with this approach?? How about an alternative approach?? Again, the idea is to prevent the requirement of a filesystem traversal during migration. Filer Serial Connectivity

Good morning all, We have 4 clustered F840Cs in our environment. As a backup connection method, we're looking at some type of terminal server that we can connect the filers to that will present the filers serial ports as IP addresses that we can connect to , in order to view the bootup messages etc, with a modem hookup in case of complete network failure. Does anyone else out there have any recommendations on make/model of equipment? Thanks as always, in advance. I'm not sure where's the best place to direct this feedback, but the NetApp Tech Library papers on Exchange on filers and SnapManager you listed below ought to be updated for SnapManager 1.1. In particular, there is no reference to NetApp Drive, and restores are described as 50GB/hr copies from Snapshots rather than SnapRestore-style reversions to the Snapshots. Netapp + Amanda.: Problems

We have been having problems backing up our Netapp filer using Amanda. We are using the modified dump program for Netapp but still everytime the amanda script runs it finds the mounted disk offline. My answer today is sponsored by the NTAP Advanced ONTAP class. This class covers how to measure items like the ones suggested below. Check out the NOW site for times, places, and costs..it's worth it! Now to the answer: To view NVRAM stats, you use the wafl_susp command. To find this command, you'll need to be in rc_toggle_basic or priv set advanced mode. To zero out the stats, use: filer*> wafl_susp -z Then run your test. Then to view the stats, run: filer*> wafl_susp -w You'll get screens full of info but the really important ones are the following 3: cp_from_timer cp_from_log_full cp_from_cp The first 2 are good, the 3rd one is bad. cp_from_timer is the number of times your NVRAM was flushed because half of the NVRAM was not filled in 10 seconds. cp_from_log_full is when you filled up half of your NVRAM and flushed it before the 2nd half of your NVRAM filled. Again, not a big deal. The 3rd one, cp_from_cp means that you filled the 2nd side of your NVRAM BEFORE you finished flushing the first half. This is bad. It's okay to have a few of them, but if they get to be a signifcant percentage of your cps, you're either over-running your NVRAM, or there's a problem with your disk subsystem and it's not writing out the data very quickly (like maybe your volume is 99% full). Now individual disk utilizations are found with statit. This is similar to wafl_susp in that you start it, then you stop it and print out the results. The 2 command for statit are filer*> statit -b to start collecting filer*> statit -e to end it and dump the data. You'll find how busy your individual disks are that way, plus a BUNCH of other things, but that's probably the most important. But before I'd even go down these paths, I'd be watching my sysstat's very carefully. sysstat 1 is your friend in looking at performance. It can give you some really good clues. Also check netstat, ifstat, and the other networking commands for errors. Check your switch ports for dropped packets. Things like flow control settings (a good thing, I suggest full flowcontrol on send and receive) can also mess up Gbit interfaces. Anyway, this is probably all I can practically jam into a single message and have it make sense. Of course, the Global Support Centers at NTAP are always here and can help your diagnose these types of problems as well. I would doubt there were any big fixes to spares_zero. I haven't checked them, but since it's not in regular command mode, I wouldn't hold my breath. One way to keep your console while the process is running is to issue the command via rsh from a trusted host. That way you don't chew up your prompt. Something like: # rsh filer 'priv set diag ; spares_zero' Note, use the single quotes so that both commands go to the filer. spares_zero still exists, but you need to set your privledge move to diag rather than advanced. This is supposed to all be fixed in an upcoming release and there will be an officially blessed way to do this. Stay tuned. I'm looking for any benchmarking info. related using a NetApp instead of server-dedicated disk in a web server cluster; i.e., how many web servers can I run before a single NetApp device becomes slower than using dedicated disk per server? This comes up quite a bit. It all depends on who how sophisticated you think the person is who may be trying to retrieve the data is. For 99.99% of the world, just zero'ing the disks (even multiple times if it makes you feel comfortable) is enough. I suppose you could create some dummy data to put on the disks after you zero out the disks, then zero them out again. But that's a lot of time and effort to get you from 99.99% to 99.999%. If you are concerned about professional, government-backed efforts to recover the data, then your only real option is to destroy the disks entirely. Bust them into thousands of pieces and dispose of those pieces in different trash containers. While this is certainly expensive since you can't return or re-use the disks, it is by far the most secure. However, there are very few people who need this level of security, but it's an option if your data abosulutely cannot ever be recovered. Jan, Legato backup software needs to save client (NetApp) "index" information back to Backup server host. Create same pool name on Backup host's attached tape drive. If you don't have tape drive attached to backup server. You can create file device and label it same as NetApp pool. Make sure you have patch 001 for 6.0.1 Legato Networker. Problem renaming files

We have our CVS repository on a F840 running 6.1R1. I've been chasing (what I thought was) a CVS Commit problem re renaming files but now I think this may be a filer issue because I've been able to reproduce the problem outside of CVS. We're using FreeBSD. Basically I have group write permission to a directory where I want to rename a file. All attempts fail with a "Permission denied" error. Then I restored the directory from a tgz file and after that, everything started working fine! The owners, permissions, and modified dates were the same as before so I don't understand why restoring this directory would change anything. Previously we had our CVS repository on a F520 running 5.3.6 and we never had any problems. Please, can anyone explain this?
