The question is if you are going to be installing just the filer and shelves or if you are going to be installing them contained in a NetApp Hardware System Cabinet. We ran into the same problem on 100mb, copying a 100mb file to the netapp took 23 seconds. We moved the 100mb nic off of the 32bit bus onto the 64 bit bus and the time to copy the file dropped to 11.5 seconds. This is unsupported but it works. Among other things, we are using them for Oracle database storage, with the hosts being Suns running Solaris 7 or 8. The interconnect is via gigabit Ethernet through a Cisco 3508 switch. We're doing NFS service only -- no CIFS. The volumes in question are between 60 and 80% full, and consist of between ten and 14 drives, either 18G or 36G depending on the volume. OS version is 6.1R1. NFS mounts are using UDP, version 3, rsize=32768, wsize=32768 (though Netapp has suggested reducing this to 8k). Recently, we have been running up against the limit of the F760's write performance, or so it seems. At best, a single (GigE connected) host is able to do 7-8MB/s of sustained sequential write traffic. These same hosts are able to read at greater than 30 MB/sec and sometimes as high as 50 MB/sec if the data is all in cache on the Netapp. What I'd really like to know is what kind of sustained write rates other folks are seeing in configurations similar to this one. At the very least, if you have any kind of F760 cluster, even without gigabit Ethernet, are you able to do more than 7-8MB sustained write? Also, when the writes are occurring, the filer CPU load is generally very high, anywhere from 80 to 100%. Disk utilitization is more reasonable, around 50% if the filer is not otherwise busy. My first thought (and Netapp's as well) would be that this is some kind of network problem, perhaps relating to GigE flow control. However, if this were the case I would expect the Filer CPU load to be lower. If anyone has seen (or fixed!) anything like this, I would appreciate any suggestions or advice. Hello, I've been dumping my filer to a remote HP DDS-4 drive on a RedHat Linux machine. It's been working great. But now I have more data on my filer than one DDS-4 tape will hold for a level-0 dump. Are there any issues with spanning more than one tape for a dump via rmt? Veritas b/u not clearing archive bit on NetApp volume

Hello List; We have an F760 running CIFS, with ONTAP 6.0.1R3. "C:" is mapped to vol0, and "D:" to vol1. We use Veritas BackupExec 8.5 over the network to connect to and back up the data/shares on these NTFS volumes. What is very odd (and I nor Netapp can seem to figure out thus far) is that the archive bit for files on C: do not get reset after full or incremental backups. Meanwhile, through the same backup jobs, the archive bit on files on drive D: DOES get properly cleared after being backed up. Because the archive bit is not being cleared on C:, our incremental backups are very large, and running well into the work day. I can't seem to find any differences in the volumes, other than vol0/C: is the root volume and uses 9GB drives, compared to vol1/D:'s 36GB drives. Regards, -Adrian

NDMPCOPY is a way to achieve the goal, it is a utility available on NOW and it basically does a backup of one filer and restore to another (or the same filer) concurrently. With SnapMirror (and vol copy for that matter), you must have at least the same amount of TOTAL space on the destination as you have on the source. This is because SnapMirror is a block for block copy. To move data to a smaller volume, you'll need to do something like ndmpcopy. This works well for the scenario you describe. This volume is 225Gigs but it only has 68Gigs of data on it. If I'm to use snapmirror to do this then I need to migrate it to a 225Gig volume correct? I wanted to shrink the volume while I was at it so I'm thinking I'm going to have to do it another way. Has anybody had experience with this? Is it safe to assume that you mean when backing up over CIFS or NFS versus the Legato client pack for NetApp? I haven't had my hands on a machine running Legato NetWorker for some time so I'm getting rusty. Anyway, as I recall, you can configure a pre- and post-job script within each client's "properties" dialog. You could use the script to issue rsh commands to the filer to do what you want. Another way to approach this might be to run a script on the NetWorker server. In the script you could issue rsh commands to the filer to take the snapshot then you could issue a manual backup via command line. Jan, if you have a version of Legato which is NDMP compliant, ( 6.0.1 and up), and define the filer as an NDMP client, then Legato itself, creates a snapshot, backs it up and deletes it. Michael, I too am running enterprise NT on the same subnet and have a 200MB channel dedicated to the scanner. I have seen pretty good performance but as I said have some issues that Symantec and Netapp are addressing. I believe you may have hit on some of them so I will do my best to help... First I found out few months ago, and will post to toasters about the following hidden option vscan options mandatory_scan off Once you set this option, even if the scanner becomes unavailable or unreachable for some reason the Filer will serve files. I ran into this and it is a compounded issue, for one it doesn't give the file but it also provides an erroneous error saying a network error has occurred which could spawn 100's of unnessary, misdirected help desk calls. As for the 3-4 weeks stop scanning issue, not sure if this is the same as the one I have had but the Filer I run CSS against is for developers. It currently has over 600GB in more then 1.5 million files. As I said I get very good performance but some of these files are huge and the CSS box times out on them. So it seems after a certain amount of time outs and/or when the queue gets filled and this happens the Filer disconnects itself from the CSS box. The CSS box will always continue to try and reconnect because of the following configuration in the symscan.cfg file RPCMaxReconnectAttempts=0 Unfortunately the Filer will not try to reconnect so in order to get this back to a functional state you need to stop and start the services on the NT box running CSS. I have asked Symantec to work with Netapp on this and they are but so far I am told it may have something to do with the limitations of RPC and Netapps implementation. I suggested maybe this could be changed from RPC to NPMP but not sure if that is possible. They said they would look into it. Other suggestions I have, is for you to make a few other changes to your symscan.cfg file. First with your connectivity I would change your ScanThreads entry from the default. With a 200MB dedicated pipe mine is now =50. Another is is if you don't have CSS configured to send you mail you should, mine are as follows SMTPPrimary= Your SMTP Mail Host SMTPSecondary= SMTPCrashAlertEnable=1 SMTPStartUpAlertEnable=1 SMTPShutDownAlertEnable=1 SMTPDefUpdateAlertEnable=1 SMTPLoadExceededAlertEnable=1 SMTPDefErrorAlertEnable=0 SMTPRecipList= E-mail Addresses SMTPDomain= With these settings you will be notified when there is an overflow, a crash, and when the services stop and start. The overflow is the most useful because when I see a large increment of these e-mails I keep an eye out for that disconnection which causes me to have to stop and restart the 2 CSS services. I am trying to automate some of this stuff but just haven't had time yet. Hopefully this made sense and helps. Michael, I have tried to do something very similar to this although I have not used the SecureShare Quota Manager and do not anything about it. I do however know that although OnTap 6.1 supports SID based quotas it only suports this for users. It does not support SID Group quotas. Does the SecureShare Quota Manager get by this? If so it is something I proably need to look at, If not then I do not believe what you are trying to accomplish can be done. Hi Frank, The output that is being referred to is actually XML, and it is generated by the EMS subsystem in OnTap. The reason it is there is to allow automated triage of problems that might occur on a filer. Because XML is a structured format, it is easier to write software to process it instead of the relatively unstructured output that appears in /etc/messages. More questions on SQL performance

How many of you out there are using SQL 7.0 SP3 under Win2K on a Filer? What series of Filer do you have and what have your performance statistics looked like compared to local attached storage. Has anyone out there been able to compare statistics between the 700 and 800 series Filers using SQL databases? Any info would be greatly appreciated. autosupport full of junk

How do others feel about the junk in autosupport? I see the entire messages file reproduced to three times the size just to put it into html format; why don't they run the script to put it into html when they want it and at NetApp instead of cluttering MY weekly reports? These FC stats can be produced once a year when there is a problem to analyze. The disk list doesn't have to be reproduced any more often than when there is change to the list. I think it is unnecessarily large and wading thru it to look for a current interesting event would be easier without it. I have been asking for options to autosupport with the customer support for over a year. I am occasionally told it will be in a future release as yet un-named. ndmpcopy level i problems

I am having problems doing an imcremental ndmp copy from one filer to another. The first level i goes fine. The second one a few days later gives this error: filer1: CONNECT: Connection established. filer2: CONNECT: Connection established. filer1: LOG: DUMP: filer1: LOG: creating "/vol/vol0/../snapshot_for_backup.828" snapshot. filer2: LOG: RESTORE: filer2: LOG: Could not create /vol/volhome1/etc/tmp/restore.clrimap.184.time_996070293.pid_23341776 filer2: LOG: RESTORE: filer2: LOG: Cannot restart restore without a dumpmap. filer2: LOG: RESTORE: filer2: LOG: RESTORE IS ABORTED filer2: Connection halted: HALT: Internal error! It appears that in the etc/tmp dirs on the target filer volumes there should be files created after each ndmpcopy called dump.dirlist and dump.bitmap but on some of the target volumes they not there. some target volumes do have these files and those volumes will do incremental copies. All initial copies completed successfully with no errors. Does anyone have any ideas why these files were not created?? The command I am using for both is: ndmpcopy -level i filer1:/vol/vol0/ filer2:/vol/volhome1/users2/

RE: disk scrub time

>From the looks of your syslog messages, it appears that you are running 6.x. The good news here is that when the time expires under 6.x, the disk scrub picks up at that point on the next disk scrub. So you may not be scrubbing every sector every week, but you will be scrubbing every sector every 2 or 3 weeks. Just some info to add to your options. Virus Scanning
