There's a flawless boot disk at http://www.bovistech.com/detect.htm . It will autodetect most network cards. We use it for GHOSTing our client PCs. On a similar note, we have severe problems _sending_ and image to the filers from any NetBIOS boot disk. I've read that it's DOS limitations to NetBIOS, but am not sure. Presently, I use a NetBeui boot disk to send the image to an NT workstation and then copy it to the filer... Works, but is a kludge. Sample outputs? (Please help!)

Could some nice souls send me outputs from running "sysconfig; df; ifconfig -a"? If you're feeling very nice, "sysconfig -v;df;ifconfig -a;exportfs;cifs shares;vol status"? And if it has a partner, run the same commands against the partner? I'm trying to fix some perl scripts which keep breaking, so I can finish a customer implementation. Anything would help, but ideally im looking for __partner pairs, vifs and trunks__ and any weird config's you can think of. Feel free to obfuscate the files if you need, such as change IP addresses to another subnet... however, I won't use them for any purpose but testing. Thanks! We are performing this exact process at our site. We actually do our Windows 2000 automated server loads from our filer using a boot floppy. Are you using a standard type of boot floppy created using Microsoft's Network Disk Creation utility that gets loaded with NT Server 4.0? As long as you specify the WINS servers (and the filers have WINS entries) in the protocol.ini, you should be able to map drives straight away. Are you able to get on the network at all with your floppy? Are you authenticating to the domain? Hello guru's We have several workstations which we want to take ghost image of, and store it on the filer, but when i try to access the filer from a boot floppy I'am not able to access the filer. I have tried to map network drive to a unix and ntfs style volume but nothing helps. I have changed the user rights for the volume, but it did not help. I can map network drives to other nt servers we have, but not to the filer. Is it possible to do this on a filer? I hope somebody can help me out here. Yes, the only other thing is the NIC card. You can add a hot standby NIC on each filer, or you can configure the cluster to share each existing NIC card in failover situations. But you don't need any other software. Ontap needs only to be licensed for clustering. You will also need a second fibre channel FC-AL card for each head so you can daisy chain to your shelves as well as the partners shelves. So you will need; Cluster kit which includes the cards, cables and software for each head. Second LRC's for each shelf (FC9 or FC8) FC-AL card for each head. Paul, Here is my two cents worth ...with Veritas Netbackup /w NDMP option (as of version 3.4x) you can not share tape drives assigned to NDMP Servers (Netapp) even with the Shared Storage Option. Note: I am sure I will get some feedback from Netapp engineering on this as not being supported since you are setting up zoning but here goes....I would setup a separate zone on the Fibre switch which includes only the Netapp HBA and the ports on the Fibre to SCSI router with the tape drives the Netapp will use (Note: I would make sure only the drives which the Netapp needs to use are on the Fibre to SCSI router ports included in the zone). I would then zone each Media Servers HBA and the Fibre to SCSI routers ports which include all the other drives into a separate zone. This will save you the headache of trying to find out which luns (NDMP tape drives) not to use when you configure the Media Servers lun mappings. One reason for restricting the rsh-ability of some commands is a concern about potential problems due to simultaneous invocations (via multiple rsh sessions). Well, hostname may seem innocuous until you use it to change your hostname. And ifconfig may seem innocuous when you only use the -a flag, but what if you take down your primary interface, you know, the one you just rsh'ed in on? I can't and don't speak for the engineers, but I think the logic behind this is that by making you put the advanced mode in front of the command on an rsh, you're make a deliberate decision and hopefully avoiding a costly error. Again, speaking only for me here, as an appliance, we walk the line between lots of cool features and safety and stability. To use the old rope analogy, we don't just sell rope. Rope can be very useful. So we sell pre-configured rope that while it can be formed to do neat things, it is special rope that (hopefully) won't form a neuse. Advanced mode is one of those compromises. Most people don't use it and hopefully have no reason to use it. But for our more experienced rope-handlers, we try to provide a way to help those who say "I know I can handle my rope being more flexible and I understand that if I'm not careful, I might make a neuse or accidentally lasso myself". :) Anyway, enough rope talk. My organization is using CommVault's Galaxy. It narrowed down to that or SyncSort. If you are and NT shop with Exchange, CommVault is the way to go from a price/feature perspective. We have thus far been very pleased with our choice. Uniquely identifying a cluster, and cluster behavior

How does one uniquely identify a cluster? I am trying to write some utilities that will tell me filesystem usage and the like, and would like to uniquely identify filers and clusters. I could use the system ids, but wouldn't it be impossible to determine the system id of a failed partner? Ideally, I want a single text string that identifies the pair as a whole. I am about to migrate 100GBytes of data from vol0 to a new vol1 that I just added to my F740. In the past I have always used tar | tar or dump | restore. I have not done this in quite some time. Are there better/faster ways to do this? Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. Also the 100GB that is being moved is a single qtree. I don't know if that makes a difference but I thought I would mention it. Thanx...

Is there a general consensus on backup software for the files? The choices for backing up via NDMP seems to be growing and I'm curious what others are using. I've started looking at syncsort's product, bakbone's netvault, veritas, and time navigator. Each of the packages so far seems to have a pretty good mix of good and bad points. barry

The filer will always try to use the smallest disk possible to replace a failed disk. In your case it will grab the 36GB drive. It will only use larger drives if they are the only spares on the system. Hi All, I am curious to know what to do in mixed FC environment when a disk fails. I have 36GB and 72GB disks (all are FC) on a F760. I have volumes with 36GB drives also a seperate volume with 72GB drives. I have one 36GB and one 72GB drive as hot spares. Now one of my 36GB FC drive is logging errors excessively. I want to replace this disk with a spare one. I believe, i have to do "disk fail <diskID>" to fail the erring disk so that it can pick up one that is a hot spare. My question/worry is that i do not want the 72GB disk to be replaced for a 36GB. How can i ensure that only 36GB drive is picked up for a 36GB drive that is failed. Thanks and regards.
