RAID checksum revert process

Okay, after creating 16 volumes on 6.1 machines for snapmirror from 5.3 machines, can I say that there really needs to be a "vol create" option to say "-checksums old". It has been a pain to create all these volumes just to wait for checksum reversion. Installing the filer on 5.3 and upgrading after the initial snapmirror isn't an option either - the destination already has other production volumes - besides, thats a kludge. Beyond that, has anyone else noticed that checksum reversions seem to be "single tasked"? For instance: Thu Sep 13 15:46:17 PDT [reactor: worker_thread:error]: A snapmirror transfer from vol0 to vol0 has found that the two volumes have differing checksum states. Data ONTAP is aborting the snapmirror transfer and reverting the checksum state for the destination volume vol0. After Data ONTAP displays a message showing the revert is complete, you can retry the snapmirror transfer. You can use the vol status -c command to see the progress of the reversion. Thu Sep 13 15:46:31 PDT [reactor: worker_thread:error]: A snapmirror transfer from vol0 to vol2 has found that the two volumes have differing checksum states. tarring files off netapp attached tape devices?

hmm ... i must be missing something simple here. i've got a DLT7000 in a library attached to one of my F520's, and i want to grab a couple of tar files off tape. tar fails with this error: sif /tmp# tar tvf poplar-1:nrst0a tar: poplar-1\:nrst0a: Cannot open: Input/output error tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now where poplar-1 is the netapp. -- michael

Backup questions...

I've been having trouble with backup/restores since day one and I'm hoping someone can help me out. Our enviornment is a clustered 840 with ~3Tb of raw disk running 6.1.1R1 in a mixed environment. The backup unit is a storagetek L700 hooked to a Solaris 8 system with Netbackup 3.4. Each filer in the cluster is direct scsi connected to 4 drives (2 drives per scsi card). The library robot is attached to the solaris netbackup box, which is also the admin host. We are using NDMP. Here are the issues: - First the backups work. We had some issues where backups would not run and found that by default the OS does not have a dumpdates file. This prevented ndmp from backing up. We simply touched the file. - I can't restore anything. I get a Permission Denied error from netbackup. I don't know if this is permission denied accessing the filer (although I can't see how... I can rsh from the box -and- backups do work) or permission denied writing the files. The restore request is for a simple directory on a mixed tree, the data has no acls. Root can mount the filesystem and do what it wants with the files directly. This is by far my biggest problem... can anyone help? - After every backup there is a file structure left at the root of *every* volume. Every volume has an /etc directory with two subdirectories, /etc/oldmaps and /etc/tmp. There are subdirectories below these , Is this normal? - Netbackup does stream backups. It sequentially backs up every volume. We have four drives per filer but it will not start the backups in parallel. I can force this by creating a seperate class for every volume. Is this the way to do it? Is there any netbackup / netapp white paper? THANKS!!

I do not have gtar on this machine. I am not sure what you mean by touch /location/filename.bak. The file cannot be copied in the 1st place to create the filename.bak. No, the target location is not empty it does have other files in it. When I copy I am copying the files to another name. We shutdown our database and then run a manual snapshot of the our volume running Oracle (kind of a bummer to start you can't snap qtree's). Then we restart our database. The problems occurs when trying to copy the Oracle files out of the snapshot directory to another location on the filer. We need to do this to test recovery procedures. I'm not aware of any reason to avoid links to files. However, current CIFS security does not allow CIFS clients to follow links that leave the share on which they originate, so that it is not possible to follow a link to another volume (unless that link is to another share, which is why it works for homedirs). This is being tracked by BURT 15808. If you want multiple volumes (or filers) to be accessed from a single point, you can use DFS to achieve this for CIFS clients. How to zero hot spare disks

I have some hot spare disks that were part of volume I destroyed. When I add disk to new wolume zeroing is started and it takes some time. I would like to zero disks on my time, but can't find the command. Uros

We want to do someting smart to limit the number of mountpoints for our Netapp users, and to make admin more easy. Question is: "Is there a way to let the filer tell cifs and nfs -boxes to follow links pointing between volumes ,in the same way as they do concerning homedirs? " On our Netapp 760 running 6.1.1R1 we have 2 big volumes for projects : /vol/vol0/proj1 -access=eto-hosts,root=grimstad1:bagri1 /vol/vol1/proj2 -access=eto-hosts,root=grimstad1:bagri1 the same volumes are also cifs shares: PROJ1 /vol/vol0/proj1 Prosjektkataloger (PROJ1) everyone / Full Control PROJ2 /vol/vol1/proj2 Prosjektkataloger (PROJ2) Tried this experiment to limit the users to mount just /vol/vol0/proj : Made a /vol/vol/vol0/proj directory, containing links : # ls -l /fagri2/vol/vol0/proj/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 19 Aug 9 15:59 adm -> /vol/vol0/proj1/adm lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 20 Aug 9 15:59 alex -> /vol/vol0/proj1/alex lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 19 Aug 9 15:59 aps -> /vol/vol0/proj1/aps . . . and a new cifs share: proj /vol/vol0/proj everyone / Full Control Mounted /vol/vol0/proj on a unix workstation, and it sees only links , win2000 and NT doesnt even understand what to do with a link.... ....so this is probably not the way to do it... -any good ideas? max capacity

I was reading one of the NOW documents to get some background on expanding our filer. I'm a bit confused as to what the max capacity limit is based on. I found a table for the 740. From looking at the table it would appear that the max capacity is limited to 1,008 GB regardless of the size of the disks used. However, the text indicates that the limitation is a function of the number of disks supported (which is contradictory to the table). The table shows that I could have 28 disks x 36 GB. Does the fact that I have 36GB disks installed limit me to a total of 28 disks? I have seven 18GB disks that I plan to keep using as well. NDMP backups and tape retention

I am trying to find information on how other companies are backing up their Filers and how long tapes are retained. We are using a F840 Filer for Oracle databases and CIFS file services. We use CommVault Galaxy to back up the data. However, it is impossible to set up a GFS-type of rotation in Galaxy for NDMP clients. Do other products also have this limitation? If so, how do you get around it. Is a GFS-style rotation needed any more with the Filer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am seeing the same error when doing a snapmirror to tape. This one's pretty harmless.. It's a condition that usually arises when it finds an EOM marker on the tape. It's important to note that everything should be working as expected. This message is just "informational". There is a KB article on the http://now.netapp.com site, ntapcs1891. You could see this on an ordinary, non-NDMP dump or other tape operation as well as any NDMP-initiated tape operation. I hope this explanation helps. Registry entries

Hello, I have a filer (740) running 6.1R1. In my /etc/registry file I have entries for options.if.e0.dhcp.* I can find no info in the documentation relating to DHCP. I can also not find where these values get set. Any ideas? I ask because the dhcp.ip and dhcp.dns_servers have bogus ip values. We are running 6.1R1, and we are seeing the following symptoms ever since installing Veritas Netbackup and a new Qualstart AIT tape library. The errors occur when a tape change occurs in the middle of a backup. The 'solution' below seems to say that Veritas is timing out waiting for NDMP to load the new tape. Does anyone know how to increase this timeout in NetBackup? My company is a reseller of NetApp.I will deploy an F740 (6.1R1) for SAP , Lotus environment at a customer. Firstly I did the demo there and connected an RS6000 to the filer directly via gigabit interface. For better performance I wanted to enable jumbo frames and enabled it as manuals described and the customer did the configuration on the IBM side. But it did not work. because of the performance over gigabit(1500) and the functionality of the filer (snaprestore indeed) they decided to buy the filer. I will install it to their live environment where the servers will be connected to the filer via cisco gigabit switch. If anybody enabled jumbo frames in such environment the configuration of IBM will be very helpful.
