Well, I wasnt specifically referring to backups. However, I had problems sharing the snapshot dir as a hidden share for faster restores from snapshot. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it will not let you copy the file out with a share error. So, if both filers in a partner pair retain their identities, does this suggest that in performance sensitive environments you would be better off with many small filer pairs than a few large filer pairs? I'm concerned with hotspots and the like. Also, how are disks handled? Can you have asymmetrix configurations with one filer seeing some disks that the other filer doesn't see? For instance filer A would see disks 1-10, and filer B would see disks 6-15? And if this is possible how does one compute the complete disk capacity for a cluster? Can you use the NodeWWN from sysconfig? How could a unique sum of all disks based on the output of sysconfig be done? And thanks again for all your help. That would be nice, wouldn't it? Freeing up 2 36GB drives would be awesome. $5 says it just replaces the floppy disk as a way to boot/load media Just got word our 880 is on the dock. We're leaving tomorrow to steal 3 FC9s from an existing implementation and plug 'em in to the 880, along with 1 DS14 shelf. Can't wait to see the DS14; fiber all the way, baby! Any recommendations where I store the root volume? FC9 or DS14? I'm inclined to store it on the FC9, as it's the most legacy. Come to think of it, am I supported on what I plan to do with my 880? I am interested. Would like to know more about the specific config. #disks/RAID config/# file systems/any tuning/ etc... This could be useful, considering the previously standard benchmark for Unix performance (SpecSFS) has been retired, and the previously published results are supposed to be a poor basis for comparison due to three identified problems. Hmm. We don't do anything special with hidden shares. The only thing that makes them "hidden" is that the clients don't display shares that end with "$". The server doesn't do anything different. If this happens again, please take a packet trace of the failure, and open a case with customer support. I am having problems with lots of files being deleted. No harm yet, thanks to snapshots and backups (thank god for netapp and veritas) As of yesterday we were almost totally certain that the problem was with mcafee virus scan for linux gone haywire. I am fairly confident that the help desk guys have got the latest virus scanners on all of the windoze workstations. However, I want to be sure that this problem is not going to happen again. I know that there is a CIFS access auditing option, but it is somewhat buggy before version 6.x. : The problem with rc_toggle_basic is that you have to remember : to execute it in pairs, to leave the filer in the same mode. : : Is there a better command? The most reliable way to run advanced commands via rsh is with rsh -l root:{password} "priv -level secret; {command}" The "priv -level secret" works for ONTAP 5.3 and later, including ONTAP 6.x. It sets the privilege for the current rsh connection, regardless of whether the console is currently in privileged mode or not. In ONTAP 6.x, "priv -level secret" is equivalent to "priv set advanced". Hope this helps. - Brian

Thanks for the quick reply to my previous question. I have one more likely simple question What versions of OnTap can you use {priv set advanced} over rsh, and which do you have to use {rc_toggle_basic}? If using rsh to execute commands, i have seen old versions which require rc_toggle_basic and other versions which you can use priv set advanced. I was hoping that some one out there may be able to shed some light on the following log entries that we have started seeing on our CIFS only Netapp 840. Commands on Partnered Filers

Are filesystems and interfaces local to each filer, even when clustered? Or, when clustered, does each filer shares the filesystems? Specifically, if I have filers A and B, and I run "df" and "ifconfig" against each filer: Do they return the same outputs? Or, does each filer retain its identity when clustered? So, /vol/vol0 and all other filesystems on filer A is different than /vol/vol0 and all other filesystems on filer B? Does it matter what mode I am in? Takeover, Cf Disabled, etc? So essentially, what I am asking is: Is each filesystem identifiable by it's Filer Serial number AND File system name? Or, by it's Cluster and File System name? If you have NT security, the ftp users, which are Unix based, have to be successfully mapped to NT accounts. You can tell if that is happening by using the "wcc -u <ftpuser>" command. For example, if you are attempting to use a user "ftp" to access a file you have to be able to successfully run "wc -u ftp". That will show the mapping and groups for that user. If you turn on the cifs.trace_login option it will show step-by-step the mapping process. Of course, you also have to give enough rights to the mapped user to be able to access the files in question. CIFS permissions problem on restore

We are testing a restore from tape on to our non clustered 820. We are using Veritas Data Center 3.41 and the security seems to get lost on the restore. Currently we are using CIFS exclusively on this filer, and we are running ONTAP 6.01 r3. The backup an restore are initiated by our backup server which is running Solaris 2.8 64 bit and we are using NDMP. We are licensed for NIS, but currently are not using this feature. Any ideas? Hi Dave, I tried to configure ftp for our cifs only server. It seems to work only on volumes with security-style unix and a qtree within that volume with secstyle unix.
