I am having problems with lots of files being deleted. No harm yet, thanks to snapshots and backups (thank god for netapp and veritas) As of yesterday we were almost totally certain that the problem was with mcafee virus scan for linux gone haywire. I am fairly confident that the help desk guys have got the latest virus scanners on all of the windoze workstations. However, I want to be sure that this problem is not going to happen again. I know that there is a CIFS access auditing option, but it is somewhat buggy before version 6.x. : The problem with rc_toggle_basic is that you have to remember : to execute it in pairs, to leave the filer in the same mode. : : Is there a better command? The most reliable way to run advanced commands via rsh is with rsh -l root:{password} "priv -level secret; {command}" The "priv -level secret" works for ONTAP 5.3 and later, including ONTAP 6.x. It sets the privilege for the current rsh connection, regardless of whether the console is currently in privileged mode or not. In ONTAP 6.x, "priv -level secret" is equivalent to "priv set advanced". Hope this helps. - Brian

Thanks for the quick reply to my previous question. I have one more likely simple question What versions of OnTap can you use {priv set advanced} over rsh, and which do you have to use {rc_toggle_basic}? If using rsh to execute commands, i have seen old versions which require rc_toggle_basic and other versions which you can use priv set advanced. The problem with rc_toggle_basic is that you have to remember to execute it in pairs, to leave the filer in the same mode. Commands on Partnered Filers

Are filesystems and interfaces local to each filer, even when clustered? Or, when clustered, does each filer shares the filesystems? Specifically, if I have filers A and B, and I run "df" and "ifconfig" against each filer: Do they return the same outputs? Or, does each filer retain its identity when clustered? So, /vol/vol0 and all other filesystems on filer A is different than /vol/vol0 and all other filesystems on filer B? Does it matter what mode I am in? Takeover, Cf Disabled, etc? So essentially, what I am asking is: Is each filesystem identifiable by it's Filer Serial number AND File system name? Or, by it's Cluster and File System name? If you have NT security, the ftp users, which are Unix based, have to be successfully mapped to NT accounts. You can tell if that is happening by using the "wcc -u <ftpuser>" command. For example, if you are attempting to use a user "ftp" to access a file you have to be able to successfully run "wc -u ftp". That will show the mapping and groups for that user. If you turn on the cifs.trace_login option it will show step-by-step the mapping process. Of course, you also have to give enough rights to the mapped user to be able to access the files in question. CIFS permissions problem on restore

We are testing a restore from tape on to our non clustered 820. We are using Veritas Data Center 3.41 and the security seems to get lost on the restore. Currently we are using CIFS exclusively on this filer, and we are running ONTAP 6.01 r3. The backup an restore are initiated by our backup server which is running Solaris 2.8 64 bit and we are using NDMP. We are licensed for NIS, but currently are not using this feature. Any ideas? If you're so inclined, you can also do this in the filerview GUI if you have (I believe) version 6.x. So, does anyone out there do backups via a share? What I've been doing is mapping a drive to the appropriate place, then backing up from the ~snapshot/nightly.0/ directory. Then I found out that this is quite a pain to restore, since my backup software (Backup Exec) insists on either using an identical tree structure (which fails, because ~snapshot is read-only) or no tree structure at all (as far as I can tell). When I try to bring up another network card on a seperate network, the filer tries to register the new ip with the WINS server on the first network. That operation barfs, then it looses communication with the DC (you can ping the DC, but "cifs testdc" fails) If I shutdown the new interface, communications with the DC resume. Everything seems to work fine during the period in which it is out of communication with the DC. I don't want it to register the new IP with the WINS server or DC (Can I stop that?). Solaris ACLs on NetApps

A couple of quick thoughts: When installing CarrierScan, make sure to select CarrierScan RPC during the install process. If you just accept all of the defaults, it is NOT selected and the AV scan machine won't be able to "see" the filer. And, as has already been mentioned, make sure that the service account is a member of the filer's local Backup Operators group. I have set up CarrierScan and it has been running since April. I have it running on NT 4 not 2000 but I have never put the CSS servers IP address in my Host or Equiv file. What I did was create an account in my domain, placed that account in the Backup Operators group locally. I enabled VSCAN on the Filer then during the install of CSS it asked for the Filer (host) and I entered the Filer. I needed to tweek some setting within CSS for what I wanted but other then that there was no real major changes to files (host, equive or usermap.cfg). Syamantec and NetApp are still working on some open issues I have but overall I think it is a good product. One suggestion for anyone implementing CSS would be to set the following hidden option. vscan options mandatory_scan off If you do not set this and lose the scanning functionality it will lock all the files (doing SCANREPAIR). Everyone coming into the Filer via CIFS (volume, tree, etc) will get a message to the affect that there is a network error when trying to access files. Of course this is an erroneous error which I have also spoken to Symantec and NetApp engineering about. If anyone has any questions I can help with feel free to contact me. Hi Dave, For anonymous ftp access, then you only need one entry in the filers' /etc/passwd file, namely the "ftp::65534:65534::/path:" entry. You should use a Unix qtree, since the files accessed must not have ACL's on them. However, you do not need an NFS license. Rahul, If you backup a filer over NFS - you will lose CIFS ACLs. If you backup a filer over CIFS - you will NOT lose NFS permissions, since we have a patented (or patent pending, excuse me but I'm not sure) to include NFS permissions in the CIFS traffic itself transparently, and restore it transparently. Thus, if you have a qtree with both filer with NFS permissions AND files with CIFS ACLs you can backup using: 1. NDMP - Since it's filer native format of dump, it backups all special attributes 2. CIFS - Like I explained above 3. NFS - With the notion that you will lose ACL information There are historic threads on this issue by the way. Hello Todd, NetWare can not be run on a filer nor does the filer support NCP. You can, however, integrate the filer into a NetWare environment by configuring the client machines with dual redirectors (NetWare and CIFS).
