CDOT domain joining with a prestaged account?

Installing my first CDOT machine, and when we got to the point of joining the first CIFS SVM to the domain, we hit a snag. It looks like ontap expects to be creating the machine account. In 7-mode, if it finds an account where it wanted to create one, it would ask if we wanted to reuse that. In CDOT, it just failed. I'm checking to make sure it's not something else like credentials or access, but has anyone else tried this? What should happen in CDOT when you join a domain where the computer account already exists? Basil

Everything in a qtree?

Hi, Back about 7 years ago when we purchased our first NetApp systems we hired a NetApp consultant to help us set them up. One of the things he told me was to always put everything in a qtree. Whether it's a cifs shares, nfs export, or luns . . . put them in a qtree. I have followed that practice. I think part of this was that our NetApp systems are for a particular application and we use snapvault for some of the backups (luns and cifs shares). This is all on OnTap v8 in 7-mode. As I'm about to create some CIFS shares for other uses, I'm wondering if this is a good practice. The new shares would be volume snapmirror'ed to a DR site, but no snapvault. Any opinions are appreciated. Failed disks...

Hello all… We have a FAS2040, with 2 shelves, which are not under support… One failed disk on shelf A, purchased disks, but i am afraid that will take about 1 week to receive them. What could happen if another disk fails (there is no more spares)? There is no DATA at all on SHELF B, should i get one disk from shelf B and put on A? If another disk goes bad, is it possible to make SHELF B takeover? Is it possible to destroy the aggr on shelf B and add it to shelf A so we would have 12 spares? What you guys would do ? RHEL Kerberos root

I'm hoping some of you fine folk can help my search for enlightenment. I'm working on getting Kerberos deployed across my environment. Our big stumbling point appears to be RHEL 5 and Kerberos root users. Specifically - RHEL5 hardcodes 'nfs' as a service principal to be used by 'root' for accessing an NFS mount. We've been looking at various different solutions, like creating an NFS user with uid 0, or (somehow) trying to map nfs <=> root on the filer. But was wondering - does anyone have a kerberized RHEL 5 environment? How are you handling root access? We've got RHEL 6 sorted, probably, because it looks like you can simply cut down your keytab to have 'just' root, which is then used for mounting/access etc.

cmod failover group

Hi Folks,Do the failover group get generated by netapp intial install?Somehow I have a group call "0ba_fg" on the node that is called 06b. Looks like someone made a typo.But most importantly: It look like the policy for node mgmt IP only have 1 node in it, is that right? Should the second node be in the policy for mgmt1 for each node?the way it is setup now, will it failover? Hi Folks,New cdot isntall, new NFS vserver. NFS shares can be mounted OK on linnux and solaris clients.I can mkdir and touch files. Copy or move or DD or any I/O operation completly hangs the mount point, the process cannot be Control-C, and kill -9 does not even help

Is it possible to copy a qtree to its own volume?

I'm trying to take a qtree and move it into its own flexvol (7 mode). It has millions of small files, so robocopy or ndmpcopy are taking too long for the final pre-cutover sync of the migration. So far, the best option I can come up with is to use qtree snapmirror to copy it into a qtree in a new volume and share that qtree, however this isn't clean, and qtree snapmirror still has to span the filesystem. My other considered option was to use a volume snapmirror and then delete everything but the qtree that I need to keep on the destination volume once it's been split off, however this still leaves me with a cifs share pointing to a qtree instead of a volume. At least it would be a block copy instead of a filesystem copy, though. Anyone have any ideas? Basil

Lots of low water mark CPs on idle filer

I've got a set of 4 filers, who have all - pretty much concurrently - decided to start racking up the 'low water mark' consistency points. E.g. wafl_susp -w is clocking up quite quickly, giving me as many as 10/sec. I think this may have caused my filers to get into a tizzy and crash, but I have two more that are still doing it. (I'm not 100% sure, because once they 'came up' the problem is gone ... for now). But anyway - these boxes have very little on them - they're not in service yet, so they only have a couple of vfilers and associated vol0s. So there is -literally- nothing happening, storage wise. The only activity is fairly regular ssh polling for performance stats/usual DFM activity. So can anyone give me a suggestion as to how to check why these might be running out of memory? I can stop the performance collection I guess, but that's been running fine for months. (And is also doing so on around another 40 filer heads, so I don't _think_ it's a problem!) They're 2240-4s, with a single shelf in a HA pair. I have 2 'pairs' (4 controllers) and the two that I've rebooted are fine again. The ones I'm looking at are dev, so I've held off doing so because I'd rather figure out what's going wrong instead.

Has anyone found a commercial insurance package that provides cyber liability and data breach coverage for data located on a commercial service like Salesforce.com? where are folks planning to migrate their storage spending to in the new year?

Happy holidays and 2015! Curious, where are folks planning to migrate their storage spending to in the new year? Here we have new agreements with several cloud vendors - "unlimited cloud storage" - so mgmt's expectation is we somehow stop buying netapp and move to cloud storage. I've had very mixed performance (throughput drops off drastically) and reliability results with initial tests mounting cloud datastores (using rsync to archive server data - anyone had better results?) Given our VMware centric workloads, I'd be leaning towards investing in local, 10G connected server storage with an eye towards VSAN Are there other vendors with a compelling story (SSD/cache) you are considering to migrate to? We are on latest vmware 5.5, ontap 7.1.2 and Dell 620/720 vmware clusters. thanks for any feedback, tips!

Toasters, It appears the following documents conflict with one another when it comes to recommendations for the value of Net.TcpipHeapMax in ESXi. ---------------------------- *How to configure VMware vSphere 5.x for Data ONTAP 7.3 and 8.x* https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=1013275 Net.TcpipHeapMax For vSphere 5.0/5.1 set 128 For vSphere 5.5 set 512 *TR3749 - NetApp Storage Best Practices for VMWare vSphere* http://www.netapp.com/us/media/tr-3749.pdf "While the NetApp best practice remains to set Net.TcpipHeapMax at the maximum value of 128MB, tests have shown ESXi 5 to be less sensitive to depletion of TCP/IP heap memory." ---------------------------- It seems that TR3749 may be out of date (last update 2011) as it doesnt distinguish between vSphere 5.0/5.1 and 5.5. To my knowledge, the 128MB maximum TCP/IP heap size is applicable to vsphere 5.0 and 5.1. I believe 5.5 increases this maximum to 512MB. I assume the current recommendation for vSphere 5.5 against a filer running ONTAP 8.1.4 7-Mode is 512MB. Can somebody confirm? not sure what version you are on, but our fastpath comment reminded me of a entry in the Clustered Data ONTAP® 8.2.1 Release Notes: ---------- Disabling fast path in some networking environments Fast path is enabled by default in all nodes in the cluster. However, you might have to disable fast path in certain environments in which fast path does not function optimally. About this task IP fast path is a mechanism that uses the network interface of an inbound request to send the response quickly by bypassing a routing table lookup. Fast path is enabled by default for all TCP and NFS over UDP connections. You might have to disable fast path if you are working in configurations of Cisco vPC, HP NIC teaming, or asymmetric routing environments. Steps 1. CIFS and NFS file names

Hi folks, We recently copied some netapp volumes to a non-netapp file server via NFS and rsync. Unfortunately we have now converted a lot of file names that were created via CIFS on the Netapp using a variety of character sets, such as Arabic, Cyrillic, Persian, etc. As I understand it, a Netapp keeps two file names for each file/folder. The CIFS filename is 16 bit Unicode while the NFS filename is "literal" 8 bit characters (i.e., not UTF-8). I presume that when a file is created on the Netapp via CIFS that the Netapp creates both the CIFS filename and a NFS filename. When we copied the volumes via NFS and rsync, the NFS names were copied over, so we "lost" the CIFS names. Is there any algorithm or procedure that we can use to convert these 8 bit "NFS" names to their equivalent 16 bit Unicode names? Ultimately we need to convert to UTF-8 which is what the destination file server uses for file names (both NFS and CIFS use the same UTF-8 filename). We have turned off CIFS access to the Netapps, and I would like to avoid turning it back on, but I may have no other way to retrieve the original 16 bit unicode names. The Netapp volumes are Unix security style and were accessed both by NFS and CIFS. Some files were originally created via NFS, some by CIFS. And unfortunately, some CIFS filenames had non-English character sets. Here are some sample NFS filenames. I have no idea what the corresponding CIFS filenames are or what character set. :31K4J00 :44O8K00 :5J0TA00 :8QLDT00 :BQLDT00 :EA0IL00 :FA0IL00 These look like the result of a hash, so there may be no way to convert back to CIFS 16bit Unicode. Time to Update Health Summary on MyAutoSupport

Toasters, After initiating a manual "WEEKLY_LOG" autosupport, how long does it take for your MyAutoSupport site to update? Specifically, the "Health Summary" section that includes the High (red), Medium (amber) and low (yellow) status indicators. The Health Summary section of MyAutoSupport is really helpful. We regularly use the Health Summary to determine when we need to perform disk/shelf firmware upgrades. However, after performing a disk/shelf firmware upgrade the Health Summary section only appears to get updated on Sunday. Even performing a manual "autosupport.doit WEEKLY_LOG" doesnt seem to update the Health Summary section w/in 24 hours - we have to wait until Sunday to see the updated Health Summary. Just wondering if this is similar to your experience as well. Thank you! Phil

SnapLock Compliance question

Has anyone worked much with SnapLock Compliance license? Because our purchase cycle may take a bit longer than planned, we are considering creating our SnapLock Compliant aggregate/flexvol using a 30-day trial license, and then add the full purchased license later. My question is whether the compliance clock and/or the WORM state of the data would be impacted once we remove the trial license key and attempt to add the full license key to the filer? I'm suspecting there should be no impact, but wanted to verify with all of the SnapLock gurus out there. :) I found KB 3010993 on the NOW site which only addresses the removal of a SnapLock license, which does not entirely cover the scenario I describe.. Maximum Total End-to-End Distance for SAS Copper?

Hello, Does anybody know if there is a maximum end-to-end/point-to-point distance for *SAS copper* cables in a stack? The Universal SAS Cabling Guide provides the following maximum distances for SAS optical but makes no mention of a maximum distance for SAS copper. *If you are using SAS optical multimode breakout cables, the following parameters apply:* *• The point-to-point (QSFP-to-QSFP) path of any multimode cable cannot exceed 150 meters* *for OM4 and 100 meters for OM3.* *• The total end-to-end path (sum of point-to-point paths from the controller to the last shelf)* *cannot exceed 510 meters.* Just wondering if there is also a maximum for SAS copper. NDMPcopy on 7.3.4p4

Hey folks, I have an old filer that I can't do a firmware upgrade on (it's being replaced in the next 6 months) where I need to move data from a qtree to its own volume. I would like to investigate the ndmpcopy command for this, however when I do this, the one CLI interactive session that the filer has is taken up. We can't do any more interactive commands on the filer, and if we press ctrl-c, the ndmpcopy is killed. I don't want to test this on my prod box and my nonprod boxes are all running newer firmware, but does anyone know whether we can kick off an ndmpcopy using a non-interactive command? Would we be able to cancel it after starting it? Thanks, Basil

How widely is the MetroCluster construct used outside the DACH region?

NetApp MetroCluster, and the SyncMirror component in particular, is a construct mainly demanded by companies in the DACH region, as I was told by NetApp. We are a Swiss company and our management often demands synchronous data replication between two datacenters on the storage level, hence we have quite a couple of MetroClusters running. How many of you outside the DACH region are using MetroClusters? And for those who don't, how do you deal with synchronous replication of data? Do you solve the problem on higher layers (OS, application, etc.) or are your requirements simply less strict, so that e.g. snapmirror asnyc is sufficient? Wolfram

Need Working Nexus 7000 Config for cDOT - 2 scenarios

Hi toasters, I'm looking for a working Nexus 7000 config for the following 2 scenarios - Single mode 10g ifgrp (2 interfaces) with 2 vlans 2 switch vPC for a two interface 10g ifgrp with 2 vlans If we bring the single mode ifgrp (e0b and e0d) up with no vlan tagging, it works fine for each sub-net. As soon as we add vlan tagging on cluster nodes, we can't ping the gateways. Require the vlan tagging to support our failover groups. NetApp 3170 and drive array ds14_NOT_mk2??

So I seem to be the place old NetApps go to die locally. This one is a v3170 which powers up fine but this drive array (DS14 version 1?) is a bit puzzling because documentation is hard to find. The person that brought it to me just provided the black (termination?) cables but wasn’t sure if they are hooked up right. Also it looks like i have two different types of fiber between the drive shelves and 3170,(SC and LC?) so not completely sure these really went together in their previous lives in production.
