Let me be the first to say, I could be wrong here, but since 6.0 allows you to offline a volume without rebooting the filer should be able to revert it back without affecting any other volumes. SnapMirror would have the same issue for the initial transfer. Basically the filesystems have to match. But since 6.x can revert, it works. The following is from ryanb regarding the list fun today. I'm forwarding it due to the fact that the toasters list is currently blocking all mail from his domain until I'm sure that things have cleared up. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the mail queues at Mathworks, so I can't clean stuff out... Wheee. That was a total fuxup when moving some stuff around/redelivering locally. I forgot to strip CCs and multiple recipients when modifying the headers -- again, I totally apologize for the goof-up. I'm thinking that somewhere between 30-50 messages got out, but I'm not so sure. Sorry! (Please don't kill me!) K.

Chris, Actually your information is slightly out of date. The current GA release is 6.0.1R3. Not 5.3.6R2. There are other 6.x releases available as well with different features added. I wasn't under the impression it has to revert ALL of the volumes, only the one you were copying. The volume upgrades are done independant of each other, so I wouldn't expect the downgrade to have to be done everywhere. questions on quotas and drive mapping

hi, using ontap 6.01r3d3, nfs, cifs, nt4 domain and nis. 1. our qtrees are now unix style. my quotas file looks like: /vol/vol0/users tree - - /vol/vol0/shared tree - - * user@/vol/vol0/users - - * user@/vol/vol0/shared - - * group@/vol/vol0/shared - - my question is when we convert from unix to ntfs qtree what will be affected? will quotas still work, will we still have to maintain dual entries in nt and nis? any other gotchas? 2. if i do this(file1 is the dns name for the filer, users is a share): C:\WINNT>net use * \\file1\users Drive J: is now connected to \\file1\users. it works fine i do this: C:\WINNT>net use * \\file1\c$ password /user:domain\nlehrer and get System error 53 has occurred. i am substituting in the pw and domain name. will the net use command work when mapping the hidden admin share? thanks. -- regards

Just checked on toasters and for an F740, the "Recommened Release" or "General Availability Release" as it is not called has been 6.0.1R3 for quite a while. The "First Customer Shipped" (previously called "Early Access") releases are 6.0.3, 6.1R1, and 6.1.1R2. cifs file creation date issue

hi, i used find . -depth -print | cpio -pdm /target-directory to copy files from sun box to filer. if i look at the the file creation dates on the filer from an nfs mount they look okay, the same as on the source. but if i look at the creation dates from a cifs connection using dir /tc ~~~~~~~~~~~ C:\WINNT>dir /?|more Displays a list of files and subdirectories in a directory. "quota report" for tree quotas only?

Any plans to include a switch to "quota report" to display only tree-type quotas? I don't see anything obvious in the manual to do this. I have a couple of filers that take can take half an hour to do a complete "quota report" when they're busy, 99.9% of the time looking up and displaying derived user quotas. I have a script that generates HTML quota reports which runs from a central admin host. I'd prefer to run it without requiring a config file listing quota trees, or kludge together some way to see which quota trees are defined (maybe use rdfile? ick...), send multiple rsh commands, collate the results, etc. I've got the data massaging working with the output of a single "quota report ; df ; df -i". RE: F85

We have an F85 and is has worked well for us. We just had an new SCSI card installed because of a recall and a tech. showed up on-site and made things painless. We use mostly NFS, but some CIFS. My only complaint would be that performance suffers when performing backups and restores with the single CPU. EMC touts that the processors run seperate processes for Management and processing. I've never had a problem with this on my F230 or F740s. I don't believe NetApp uses the break signal as a trigger to drop to Prom mode (which is the problem the Suns have). I used to have one ASCII terminal between my three filers that I freely swapped around as needed. For the record, the Suns don't crash, they just drop to the prom mode (ok prompt). We need to move the Wyse terminals few feet, and that will require disconnecting and rerouting the serial cables. I've never disconnected the console while the filer is up and running. Will this crash the filer, or cause any problems? I know that some Sun servers crash when the console is disconnected, and I'd like to avoid that if at all possible. Hi Warren, You don't need to worry. I regularly attach and detach my laptop for use as a console, and the filer doesn't mind. A little off topic, but I just wanted to address this: " I know that some Sun servers crash when the console is disconnected". Actually they don't crash, but the serial driver interprets the disconnect as a break signal, and drops into the prom monitor. If this happens, you can just type "c" and the system will continue where it left off. This isn't usally a problem unless it was in the prom monitor for an extended period of time. I've never had a problem unplugging laptop or console-server serial cables with the filer running. I'm not trying to run an app at all. Just one dumb database for testing. Thanks for the suggestions for the White papers. I'm drowning in tech documents. I'm making progress now at least. I have two SQL2000 servers in a failover configuration with the DB on the filer. The log shipping is working fine.
