swap broken disk/still broken status

Hello all, I have a F760 running Data Ontap 5.3.6R1. Recently, one of the disks has entered into a broken status. I received a replacement drive and proceeded to swap out. I gave the filer plenty of time to recognize the drive pull. However, when I pulled the drive, I received no notification on console or in the messages file confirming a drive pull/empty slot. Of course placing the new drive in, results in an unchanged broken status. sysconfig -a reports the drive as unloaded. Is "Unloaded" the correct status for broken disk? 16: SEAGATE ST318203FC NA05 17.0GB (Unloaded) Any ideas? -- Kris Haislip <khaislip(a)interliant.com> UNIX System Administrator Interliant, Atlanta

Robert, Per the system admin guide: Host no buffer: The number of times the driver could not allocate a buffer and a packet is dropped. This might happen when the filer is very busy. If the count increases continually, it might indicate that a software component is not returning buffers. I assume you have a call open, since you have changed the NIC. Please work with the support centre on this. Questions that occur to me are: Which ONTAP release are you running? Is the filer running at very high CPU when the network problem occurs? Are you monitoring the filer with MRTG or similar to see patterns of CPU and network usage? You dont need spares to do it. You can copy the /etc directory to another volume and set it as root. Farid, Have you considered our own "options cifs.home_dir" feature? This feature enables you to share automatically, in case you already have home directories that are called like the user. Eyal. The argument for the option is a comma-separated list of existing directory paths that are searched in order. If no list is supplied, the current list is displayed. The directories under these paths should have the names of users as their names. When a user connects to the filer using CIFS and there is a directory name that exactly matches the user's name, they will see a share with their name. That is their home directory. Only that user can access the home directory using this share. No other user can see that share name since other users are logged in under a different user name. The default value for this option is the null string. To set this option to the default value (a null string), use a pair of double quotes ("") as the argument. cifs.home_dir_namestyle Specifies how the name portion of the path to a user's home directory is determined. If no argument is supplied, the current value of this option is displayed. Valid values for this option are: a null string, ntname, mapped, or domain. All user home directory paths begin with one of the paths given by the cifs.home_dir option, followed by a slash and the user's name. If this option is set to ntname then a user's Windows login name is used and only downward symlinks (in the directory hierarchy) are followed. If the value of this option is mapped then the user's UNIX name is used. The UNIX name is obtained by mapping the user's Windows login name using the file /etc/usermap.cfg. If this option is set to domain then the user's name includes both the user's domain and Windows login name separated by a slash. Robert, Can you elaborate on what you mean by dropping? Are you losing connectivity from the client side? If so, what OS are you running? What type of switch are you plugging the Gigabit interface into from the Netapp end? What are the settings on the port on the switch? drive mapping issues

we are ontap 6.01r3d3, nfs and cifs. clients are winnt 4.0 sp5 using sun nfs client sw and native winnt cifs. filer dns name = file1 filer wins name = joe users is the nt share if i do net use * \\joe\users i get a cifs connection if i do net use * \\file1\users i get an nfs connection if i try to map a drive from the explorer gui to \\file1\users i get network path not found. our normal syntax to map drives using nfs is net use H: sunbox:/usr/local/h is there anyway to get a cifs connection using the dns name on a client that has both nfs and cifs on it?? we want to migrate from nfs to cifs. we want to use the dns names, and we can't [easily] remove the nfs client. thanks. -- regards

I've got a bunch o' data that would function fine on a RAID-0 type volume... (SAS Tempfiles, holding tank for data transfers, etc...) I didn't think it was possible... ONTAP currently maintains 4 times: * atime, updated when the inode is accessed (unless you have disabled that on the volume), * mtime, updated when the file is modified, * ctime, updated when the inode is changed, and * crtime, which is set when the inode is created. Probably what is happening is that the Unix client is displaying the "mtime", while the Windows client is displaying the "crtime". The CIFS protocol has calls to retrieve the ctime, but I don't know of a way to get the ctime using the Win32 APIs. Also, the crtime is not available to NFS clients until NFSv4. So it looks like you're ok if mtime works for you; just use dir/tw from NT. Yes, the disk firmware process will automagically happen when the filer is first booted into ONTAP 6.1.
