STK libraries, with Auto Clean enabled, will present status to the backup application that a drive is being cleaned. The drives all present to the library that they need to be cleaned and the drive vendors like this because drives should only be cleaned when necessary - prevents excessive head wear. With Auto Clean enabled in a library a clean will occur when the drive tells the library that it needs to be cleaned. This means that a clean operation could occur in the middle of a multi-volume backup causing problems for the backup application. None of the backup applications make use of the status the library presents to say that a clean operation is occurring, they all have different methods of cleaning drives. Some base cleaning on number of mounts and some on hours of use - drive vendors don't like either method as they only want a drive to be cleaned when they determine that it is necessary. Because the backup apps don't make use of the library status notification we usually suggest that customer's let the backup app determine when to clean a device. This means that a clean will occur when the backup app wants to do one, this way you don't encounter cleanings during multi-volume backups. Veritas NetBackup put out a big patch recently that addressed this cleaning issue (and other issues), I think in patch 3.4.1 - you will have to check the Veritas site. NetBackup will now detect that a drive is being cleaned and 'wait' for this to end. I'm having trouble getting my carrier scan server to register with my filer when using a service account. When I change the service account to a domain admin account, things work fine. I therefore conclude that my install/config is correct, with the exception of my service account permissions. Have done the following: - created a service account in the domain - added the service account to the local "Backup Operators" group on the netapp - added the service account to local admin group on win2k machine (so it can run as a service?) Any suggestions? Thanks.

I guess what I am getting at is make sure you get it in writing. I agree with your take on NFS file locking, but I have been in situations where support engineer A promised something that support engineer B would not support. If you can point to a Veritas document that states they support the database over NFS, your are in favorable situation. I had the same problem. It turned out to be a bug in ontap. I noticed that disabling the virus scanner on my pc fixed it. I reported the problem to netapp and its fixed in 6.1.1R2 .... my suggestion is to upgrade. Hi, I have this weird issue with file access to a particular file on our filer. When you click on the file it hangs the Windows Explorer for a good few minutes before it returns control. If I attempt to copy the MS Word file (1.7mb) it takes an extremely long time (up to 5 minutes). Other files of the same size or larger copy fine from Filer to Windows 2000 Server or Professional. Hi We actually use a F85 filer as NFS server only but we are palnnig to use it also as a CIFS server for our PCs , I wonder if I could safely use a Samba server as a domain controller in combination with the filer as a user data server ? I'm looking at adding some additional space to our F840's and I'd like to shop the used market if the price break is worth it and the support is there from Netapp. Also, does anyone have a vendor they'd recommend for used Netapp gear? We are using NFSV3, TCP/IP and ONTAP 5.3.5 The symlinks we removed were pointing to another machine and path so the only IO on the F740 (for the 1/3 of our writes that are affected) was the symlink lookup. From our observations the symlink caused a 60% load on the F740 for less than 10% of the NFS operations. Mainly because all of our developers have paths on that filer sourced in their profiles in their unix shells (/usr/local/ and home directories for instance) their shells get REALLY REALLY slow all of the sudden. I think I may need to rethink my storage architecture if heavy reads/writes are going to the filers performance this much. Basically, I guess I should balance it between my 2 filers that the one with the highest traffic is not where the home directories and /usr/local sit. This is on my older f720, and I just got a f740. Assuming you are talking about NFS access, this is likely not an issue with ONTAP. NFS clients have to look up each component of a path as it is parsed, regardless of whether it is a symlink or not. But if it is a symlink, you have to read then look up each component of the symlink, so that adds to the total lookup load, perhaps significantly, depending on the number of components in the symlink. In your case, where you are doing relatively small I/Os against a large number of files, path lookup will probably dominate the mix. Removing symlinks will reduce the lookups, so you would expect a benefit. But I would not expect this to be something that would be affected much by changing ONTAP, since it is a fundamental property of your load. I think I may need to rethink my storage architecture if heavy reads/writes are going to the filers performance this much. Basically, I guess I should balance it between my 2 filers that the one with the highest traffic is not where the home directories and /usr/local sit. This is on my older f720, and I just got a f740. In our environment we are doing 1-2MB/s write and 2-3MB/s reads, on many small files. 1/3 of our writes were going through symlinks. When looking at the stats for one of our systems, lookup was the highest on the list of operations. When we changed our software to avoid the symlink the CPU load dropped about 60%. Legato Networker NDMP backup of Filers

Are there any other brave souls out there using Legato Networker's NDMP software to backup a Filer? I know most everyone uses Veritas but the locally Veritas has some customer support/satisfaction issues. I'm running Networker 6.1 build 186 backing up Filers running DOT 6.1R1. The problem I'm having is restoring files using their Direct Access Restore (DAR) which they crow so loudly about as THE feature that puts them ahead of the competition. For restores from multi- tape backups the restore fails when trying to find files on the second or third tape. I've applied their unreleased patches for nwrecover and recover which made some improvements but I'm still getting failures. I starting to feel like I payed to be a beta-tester for them. Is there anyone else using Legato's NDMP backup that has any info, tips, war stories to share? RE: Upgrade from F740 to F840

It's pretty easy. Go ahead and download the version of OnTap you want to use (Intel of course). Grab the disks and make them, too. Extract the new OnTap (Intel) to the 740 that's in place using the standard OnTap upgrade procedure. Down the original 740 and swap heads. Boot with floppies on the 840. When normal boot is complete, log in and run "download" command. Reboot again without the floppies and it should be good to go. Did this 2 months ago.
