from netapp buglist i am f760 ontap 6.1.1r2 does anyone know anything about this: "there are two issues with restoring ACLs via the filer's NDMP Local Direct Access Restore capability. First, you need to set the NDMP Client Environment Variable "EXTRACT_ACL" to TRUE. The variable currently defaults to FALSE. I am using snapmirror over a T1 to transfer to volumes between a 760 and an 840 both running 6.1.1.r2. The 760 is GigE and the 840 is 10/100, when I look at sysstat I am only getting about 160kbs. Is any else seeing these type of results with snapmirror over a T1. If not any ideas on increasing transfer rate of the snapmirror. Thanks -- Steven N. rsh and uid

Does rsh to a filer require that the real uid be root or just the euid? I am scripting a little snapmirror update for some developers and can't get it to work when it's suid. But if I put a c program in front that sets the uid it works. However, it only seems to work when the real uid is 0, not just euid. Slow CIFS Write Performance

Hi All, I am in the process for migrating user home directories from the current PDC to the filer. Copying 4GB of data took 4 hours to complete. Both the filer and the server running on Gigabit interface. Search the archive and there was suggestion on the smb block negotiation. Any other hints to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated. Filer - F740 with 1000sx interface PDC Server - Compaq ML530, 2 Xeon 1GHz Processor, 1128 MB of RAM, Gigabit Network Card TIA Weng-Kiam Lim

I spent most of October with netapp on this one. For me, it was fixed in 6.1.1R2. I suggest you upgrade. See bug id 54265. I apologize in advance for such an open-ended question. Also, I recognize that this subject is probably as much art as it is science. Nonetheless, I would appreciate any insight that can be offered. I am looking for guidance on the subject of test lab requirements. Specifically, if an organization has multiple filer models in production, is it sufficient to maintain a single filer model in the lab for testing? More generally, can anyone point me to resources on the general subject of designing a data center test lab? A cursory search of the web was not helpful (probably because I am having some difficulty adequately refining my searches). Jeff Browning's paper (TR3055 Creating a UNIX-based Database Software Testing Environment Using a NetApp Filer, http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3055.html) is instructive from a software testing perspective. I'm interested not only in that, but also h/w and s/w compatibility/interoperability testing, as well as performance testing. Thanks in advance. subst cmd problem - more

toaster folk, mark muhlestein was gracious enough to read my pktt traces. it seems eventhough i am pointing directly to a dir with subst: subst h: \\filer\users\a\adam the command tries to get attribs from \\filer\users\a. so eventhough i had cifs.bypass_traverse_checking on and even an X perm on \\filer\users\a subst got mad. putting some level of read on \\filer\users\a seems to correct it. subst h: \\filer\users\a\adam then works. right now i have R,X on it. any comments? thanks -- regards

hi, our homedir structure is /vol/vol0/users/a/adam we want to use the subst cmd instead of 'net use' because we go below the share. and since we have the first letter of the userid in there we can't use the ontap homedir option. however, we can't get subst to work as a user. C:\WINNTSRV>subst q: \\filer\u7\k\kusr1 Path not found - \\filer\u7\k\kusr1 subst works fine as admin. u7 is an ntfs qtree. kusr1 has full control over its dir. cifs.bypass_traverse_checking on is set. i also gave kusr X rights on u7 and u7\k. no diff. filer is 760 with ontap 6.1.1r2. volume is unix style. anybody ever get this to work? any suggestions? thanks. -- regards

When it's introduced into our production environment next month, it will operate in an unclassified (but sensitive) environment. If a user inadvertently saved a document classified "secret" to the filer, what is the DoD-approved method to completely wipe the file from the volume? Thanks in advance for the help!

Not a direct answer, but a related subject... If your environment is subject to DoD restrictions related to data classification, then you may wish to ensure you have the warranty uplift for non-returnable disks. NetApp cannot accept returned disks under warranty that have been degaused or otherwise modified to purge data to satisfy classification requirements, as this will nullify their warranty with the OEM manufacturer (it is well known that NetApp is a software company and their disks are - or at least were - all Seagate or IBM). You will be charged for replacement disks, if you do not purchase this uplift. Hope this is useful, even if it does not directly address your question. We too have experienced similar performance issues on the same OS version. However, our users are using Trend OfficeScan for virus scanning, not NAV. We have an open case with NetApp, but so far they have provided us with no information. If this is a widespread problem with this OS version, I would like to know when a patch is expected, if anyone knows. Thank you. David, Exactly what kind of issues are you seeing. I have the exact same setup except I have Gigabit instead of 100Mb. The issue primarily seems to be opening Office files from a share can take 30+ seconds. Other files types don't seem to be such an issue although I've personally seen a tiny text file take 20 seconds to open in Notepad. I've been the lone voice in the wilderness claiming it's not a Filer problem although it sounds like that might not be entirely true. We did see that running NAV with network drive checking enabled significantly made file access slower. We've done extensive testing and trouble shooting with the local NetApp folks. They discovered the NAV problem. The biggest reason I've not been looking at the Filer as a source of the problem is we've experienced the exact same behavior when accessing files from a share on an NT server. That in conjunction with some packet captures we've done seem to point to a problem with NT's TCP/IP stack. The stack starts out using very small packets and takes forever to ramp up to a decent packet size (Win2K is much faster - in tests a Win2K box on 100Mb ran laps around an NT server using Gigabit). We also use NIS as our primary means of authentication on the Filer and we still haven't ruled this out as an issue. I'm certainly interested in learning more about your problem and everything you learn/hear. This has been made a "top priority" for me to resolve and it's been frustrating because there doesn't seem to be a "smoking gun" and in the meanwhile management and users are cursing the good name of NetApp. Michael Cope Unix Systems Administrator Isis Pharmaceuticals mcope(a)isisph.com

Bug in /etc/sysconfigtab (ONTAP 6.1.1R1)

Hmm, just noticed (after returning home after a service window) that the filer I just installed another FC card (X2030B) in slot 2, didn't like the card in that position. The error message in the autosupport mail was: sysconfig: QLogic ISP 2100 32-bit Fibre Channel card (PN X2030B) in slot 2 must be in one of these slots: 8,7,6,3,3,1. It didn't hit me untill I spent 10 minutes talking to someone at the frontline of NetApp Support, that I did install the card in the correct slot (I did verify with the system configuration tool in NOW before installing). I blame the time of night, but as more time spent looking at the error message, I still could not shake the thought that something was wrong with the pattern "8,7,6,3,3,1" According to the lady, (and BUG 54796) the work-around was to ignore the error (slot 2 is supported) or move the card and wait for the next release of ONTAP. I edited the sysconfig instead to read allow F740 X2030B 3 8,7,6,3,2,1 1 and 'voila', sysconfig -c did not complain anymore. RE: Upgrade from F740 to F840

Fairly straight forward. There is documentation out there if you search the NOW site. I have it but, it's on my other PC. I'll send it to you when I get a chance. Basically, all you do is an OnTap upgrade. Just unzip the new system files, not the boot disks, in the /etc directory, enter "download", halt the Filer. Swap heads and boot up. Be careful about things like NIC slot numbers, hostnames, netbios names, ip addresses, DNS, NIS and things like that. Other words, if you're using the onboard ethernet on your 740, its name is 'hostname'-e0. If you go to Gb-E or even another 10/100 port on the 840, your host name will change to 'hostname'-e8 or something.... This may screw up your DNS and possibly NIS. So, my point is, review the entire config and think about what may change and the possible ramifications. I will only swap heads and keep the disks. I can't seem to find document describing this procedure. Any body done that? How do you change ONTAP from Alpha to Intel version? Regards, Uros
