NFSv4/krb against an AD without a CIFS license

Trying to configure NFSv4 and Kerberos - have managed it several times now with boxes that are on the domain, but for various reasons, this one doesn't have a CIFS license. I'm getting an error: "unable to setup kerberos for NFS could not set up active directory KDC" After entering my administrator account in "nfs setup". Can anyone point me in the direction of what I'm missing here? (Am wondering if it's some variant of needing a machine account created to act as a service principal, or something else is going wrong). Thanks, Ed.

All Flash FAS?

Hi Toasters, Curious if anybody has experience with an all flash FAS deployment? We currently utilize Flash Cache and Flash Pool backed by SAS 15K and 10K drives but are considering an all flash FAS solution for our next system. What prompted you to go with an all flash config versus leveraging flash as a cache tier? What size SSD's are you using? Not interested in an E-series array as we depend upon the features of ONTAP. Also not interested in fronting an E-series array with an ONTAP system. I am aware of the 96 disk per stack limitation that goes along with FAS and flash. Cheers! -Phil

Flexscale lopri_blocks

I'm currently contemplating caching on my filers. Specifically - setting those 3 flags on a flexscale cache appropriately. I _think_ given the workload I'm putting through one of my set of filers, enabling lopri_blocks is beneficial When I do, a 'stats show -p flexscale-access' gives me more disk reads replaced, and a better cache hit ratio. However I'm also looking at wafl:wafl:read_io_type and seeing that mostly - my cache module is only servicing about 10% of the IOPs going through my system anyway. Of the remainder, it's a pretty even split between disk/cache. And with 'lopri_blocks' set to on, my cache is churning data faster - but with it off, hit rate drops to <10%. I'm wondering if anyone can offer suggestions as to a good way to compare the two states - filer side. Are there any metrics I _should_ be looking at, that I'm not? Primarily looking at: - total IOPs (there's only one volume on this filer) - response time. - Disk utilisation (definitely increases when lopri_blocks is off). - cache stats as above. CP types - mostly this system is doing log_full CPs, and is getting a fairly steady stream of RW IOPs. Most IOs are NFS getattr and lookups though, which are mostly metadata. Of 100K iops, it's about 90% non-RW and 5% read, 5% write. I think I'm right in saying that these metadata IOs are going to be fairly small and thus served out of RAM (mostly) anyway. I'm also (re) reading TR-3832 - Flash Cache best practice. This is a little more vague than I'd like on figuring out whether 'lopri_blocks' will actually be useful. I _think_ they are based on a better hit rate, and a better reads-replaced rate. Any read replaced is one that's served from a faster tier, and is therefore 'better' objectively, right?

Yes, I had problems with OnCommand Host, ie my VMware backups stopped, when I disabled SSLv3 last week. Since it's no longer supported I just re-enabled it again. My guess is it's related to old Java? Also, while looking at it I noticed that the SSL certificates had expired some years ago but nothing complained or stopped working. My apologies if this has been discussed. I searched the archives and didn't come up with anything. Customers are asking about disabling SSLv3 due to the POODLE vulnerability. Looking over the kb articles, NetApp's guidance is rather sparse. Has anyone disabled SSLv3 in their storage environment and if so, what did you see? I have a preliminary report that the vSphere side of things has some issues when SSLv3 is disabled but I don't have reliable details yet. Best to all, RM

Hello, I'm currently working on implementing DR for Symantec Enterprise Vault (EV), all EV data partitions are on NetApp filer (EV's SQL instance is out of the scope here), being accessed via FCP. I was hoping there was EV plugin for NeApp SnapManager, but it's not the case, also Symantec don't provide anything in that regard. I wonder if anybody looked at EV + SnapMirror integration? What were your approaches? My idea so far: 0. Setup SM jobs for EV volumes. 1. Set EV into 'backup mode'. 2. Trigger SM update for the EV volumes. CDOT CIFS shares import?

Does anyone know of a clean way to import CIFS shares? In 7-mode, I'd manipulate the /etc/cifsconfig_share.cfg directly if I ever needed to, but in CDOT, there's no such thing. I'm trying to plan a cutover from an EMC NAS to a Netapp SVM, and once we've got the shares on the Netapp configured and have done our final robocopy, I need to unjoin the SVM from the domain and rejoin it with the computer account of the old EMC. Doing this causes all the shares to be deleted. If there's no clean way to do this, I'll be building a command file of vserver cifs share create commands, but I'd really prefer not to have to. Shelf recognition problem with DS14s

Greetings, My apologies for the long email but I'm trying to put in as many details as possible. I have some DS14 shelves attached to some 6290s running 8.1.2P4 7-mode. I've run into an odd problem that I think will require a takeover/giveback, but wanted to see if I've missed anything. I'm pretty sure the problem is not the shelf IDs :-) Controller A sees all disks and shelves through the loop just fine. Controller B sees both paths, but for the shelf number and bays, it only shows question marks for those. All connections are on PCI HBAs, nothing is using the onboard ports. Here is an example of the storage show disk -p command from Controller B: 9d.82 B 8d.82 A ? ? Here is the same path on controller B using a sysconfig -a: 82 : 0.0GB 0B/sect (Startup failed.) As you can see, it sees device 82 down both paths, but it can't identify the shelf or the drive bay. When I look on controller A, it has valid information. If I at a disk from controller B, it won't see any information on the disk like serial number, disk size, firmware, etc. Controller A sees everything just fine and does not have any Startup failed messages. If I do a storage show disk -n, controller A sees 84 drives, but controller B only sees 4. Those 4 don't show correctly either. If I manually pull a drive and reseat it, it will show up as an unowned drive with no valid shelf or bay slot. It will show up correctly in the sysconfig -a output. Here are things I've tried with no luck. 1. New FC ports on the filer side. 2. Reseating the shelf interface cards on both shelves 1 and 6 where the FC connections come in. 3. New fibre cable between shelf and filer. 4. Swapped controller A & B connection in shelf #1. Controller A sees everything correctly down the same path that controller B doesn't. Controller B doesn't see anything correctly down the path controller A was using and seeing everything. 5. Manually pulled a drive from a shelf and plugged it back in. 6. Verified I am not at any maximum number of drives or shelf count per cluster limit. 7. Verified both heads have the same shelf/drive firmware and qual_devices packages. The only thing I can think of is somehow the registry or something on controller B has corrupted. Since I have a head in an odd condition for this loop of disks only I'm a little reluctant to do a takeover and giveback. CDOT snapshot thoughts

So, I have a user who want me to turn of snapshots, and delete the old ones, across about 100 areas, all of over 10TB in size. No problem says I….. then my poor brain starts to think about how I could do this using the available policies. A colleague suggested altering the specific protection policy applied to these areas, so that the policy has zero snapshots kept, with the thought that it would slowly ‘age them out’. Turns out not, or that’s the way it looks at the moment. So, I’m left with a couple of options, basically, manually delete all the snapshots via script, and turn off snapshotting completely on those areas, and reduce the snap reserve to zero…..or hope the policy will do some magic for me overnight. I have installed and used showmount plug-in in the past.But it does not work on new cluster and SVM'sI guess I forgeting a step..I am asuming it is using ssh/http/https connection?I see a difference in the ports between working and notAm I correct? sanlun on Windows?

Guys, Trying to map LUNs presented to a Windows host back to the source Netapp Volume/Lun using something equivilent to the 'sanlun' command I can use on Unix systems. I tried installing the Windows HUK (Host Utilities Kit) but burried in the release notes is a cute little statment that 'sanlun' isn't available on there. Is there *any* tool which I can use from Windows to show me the Netapp volume and lun name from the Windows side of things? Thanks, John

If the volume is snapmirrored be careful about wild cards, and forcing deletion of all snapshots. DS2246 PSU removal unnoticed

Hi All, I've been testing a few monitoring scripts for cDOT and had to pull out some physical components on heads / disk shelves, I noticed the following: when a PSU removed from a DS2246 disk shelf, this fact is not visible for CLI tools like "alert" or "system health". Also Zephyr API calls of 'ses' category don't seem to have visibility on that. So currently there is one disk shelf running on a single PSU and cDOT is quite happy about it. The disk shelf has an amber light on and there was the following event log entry once the PSU was removed: 12/19/2014 11:05:15 na101node-1a WARNING ses.status.psWarning: DS2246 (S/N SHFHU1427000371) shelf 24 on channel 0b power warning for Power supply 1: not installed. Adding disks to existing aggregates

Hello toasters, A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to destroy an aggregate in order to consolidate capacity. I started off with two aggregates, each with two RG and both aggr were 600GB drives only the older drives were FC/15K whereas the new aggregate is SAS/10K (I know you can mix RPMs and I'm ok with that). What I'm not ok with is what happened when I attempted to add 8 drives to the new aggregate. The current RG size was 12 and there were 12 drives in the first RG and 11 in the second, I then changed the RG size to 16 and added the drives to the aggregate (expecting to add 4 in each RG). But what really happened is that OnTap added 5 drives to RG1 and created RG2 with the remaining 3 drives. Support couldn't find any documentation on this and (I knew this) that it could only be corrected by destroying the aggregate. Have any of you experienced this? Multiple vCenter VSC installations facing the same storage targets?

Supported configuration? We're carving off a dev VMware environment that will continue to leverage the production NetApps. This new dev cluster will have its own vCenter plus VSC. Can multiple VSCs point to the same storage targets? RM
