Hi Toasters: Is it possible to rescan the SCSI bus on an F760 without rolling the filer? We just direct-attached some DLT7000 drives and don't want to suffer an outage to make them work. Dead Disk Shelf for One of The Clustered Filer

Hi, Is it possible for the disk shelf to completely fail? By this I don't mean the power supply or fans because those are redundant and replacable. I thinking more of a board/ic failure or maybe shelf firmware bug that can completely knock out a disk shelf. If there is a remote possibility of this happening, then I figure the partner would not be able to take over the failed filer through channel B as well under a cluster environment. Am I being too paranoid? I'm looking for something like the Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) for the Disk Shelf if available, be it FC9 or DS14. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Hi! Has anyone ever seen a mapped drive, off a nteapps completly vanishing from a PC? We use win2k and map a drive to U:. However, on some machines the users report that this drive just disapears. If they re-run the logon script it reappears, and other CIFS shares stay in place on the machine..any ideas? Hi, we finally bought our CIFS license. :) FILER2> version NetApp Release 6.0.1R2: Fri Feb 9 01:12:44 PST 2001 We _don't_ intend to use a Domain Controller (do we have to?). To the moment, and after some reading I face following problems: - the indicated copy+paste of a crypted password from an unix server to the /vol/vol0/etc/passwd fails, I keep getting an NT_STATUS_WRONG_PASSWORD. Interesting point. IF DFM actually can do the things I can not (disk trending, failure prediction, etc) the tool may be worth something after all, especially if it has a Solaris version avalible. (I don't run any Win boxes). Perhaps I'll look into this further. Any tool I write probly would not go the extent to do things like trending, focusing almost solely on failure detection. As for failure prediction, I could only do a very very basic scetch, and it'd be highly in-accurate probly doing the famous "You have accumulated X number of errors on Disk x.x in the last X hours. Failure is likely" trick. I'll dig around netapp.com and NOW to learn what I can about DFM, maybe I can find manuals. Thanx Brian. It seems to me that a low/no cost alternative should be avalible. Sure it won't be as nice and robust, but work none the less. If I had the (read: ANY) money I'd consider a propritary tool, but the ammount of data suppied from the toaster is so profound that it's hardly a task to simply write your own. What, if anything, does the proprietary tool buy me anyway? Possibly the ability to "graphically manage your raid groups and volume. Make changes with just a click!" (I can see the ex-cheerleader spokeswoman now). However, OnTap is cozie enough for me, so I opt to leave these forms of GUI management for thoughs who need it. BTW, some comments were made about BB being a possibile solution, however I'm avoiding it because it is, IMHO, a cludgey tool and has the worlds most pathetic CGI interface ever. Even though these issues could actually be hammered out by a couple tactful hacks, I think there are enough people who currently enjoy BB that I'd be forced to fork the code base, and I don't recall them being under GPL. In any case, BB is out as a possiblity too, despite the fact that it's pretty close to what I need. Monitoring Tools for Failure Detection

Hello Masters of Toast, I'm looking for some input and suggestions on something I'm preparing to take up, any suggestions or comments are appreciated... There are several tools avalible (namely MRTG and Cricket) for monitoring Filers (and I suppose NetCache's too), but I've not found these tools adiquate. The problem is that these tools are best at graphing statical information over a period of time, which is important to most of you for reporting and monitoring the performance of your Filers. However, in my case, I'm not really interested in the performance of the filers. What I am interested in is general health and failure detection. At one point the filers were monitored by logging in each day and manually checking via sysconfig -r, then (unwilling to log into every filer for quick checks) I decided to implement a small tool which could via SNMP do basic checking and reporting of filers basic vitals via a single command. I'm now becoming unsatisfied with this tool, and preparing to build a much more complex tool that can do more than simply look for failures in componants, but also do analysis on networking and fibre channel statistics, automated failure detection to a paging system, as well as offer both CLI and CGI interfaces. A later version would probly grow to include trapping. So the question is this. Am I wasting my time? Is there already a sutable tool to do this? Igor, I believe that the NTP protocol recommends 3 time servers as part of the algorithm calls for checking for network latency, and keeping in mind that the "authority" time server may drift as well. If you think that your 740 is "more stable", add that to the list of time servers (I think that the filer will allow a query), then it will get even more interesting. I know that on unix servers, it is suggested that localhost be added as a low priority host - that way, just in case the network bogs down, it can rely on the local clock without having to reset it all the time. Paul, I use 6.0.1R3 and noticed this as well when I started using user quotas. Here's the issue - the user quota is for the user on the partition NOT the home directory itself. So, for instance, I have users who own files in other users' home directories. Doing a 'du -k' (I only use our filer for NFS/Unix, not for CIFS/NT) of that other user's home directory will report much more than what the quota report shows. This is exactly what you are seeing. Discrepancy between quota report and actual quota size

Running a 740 filer with 6.1.1R2P1. Just recently implemented user quotas on the home directories. Now when I bring up a quota report, the home directories show up but the amount the report is showing does not match the actual amount of data in the folder. I'm not talked a few K, but in one instance the report shows 4M of data when actually it is 1.2G. Thoughts? I created a share on an F740 (Ontap 6.0.1R3) and am trying to map a drive from a CIFS client (Windows 2000) automatically at logon point. I have no problems mapping the drive once I am logged on but would like it so that when a user logs onto the 2000 machine the drive gets mapped automatically. I have followed the microsoft suggestion which is copying the autoexnt, instexnt and servmess.dll files to the winnt/system32 root. I have also created a batch file whcih contains the following line 'net use j: \\filer\x03. I have tried the starting the service with the local account and also the administrators account but still nothing. I have also added another command to the batch file (md test) and when the service is started it creates the directory test but does not map the drive. Does anyone have a base line transfer speed using NDMP copy from one filer to another using 100 Full? I know there are a not of network variable that can fluctuate the speed. I am just trying to get a base line. Thanks

62R1 and NDMP copy

I am in the process of planning a upgrade of a F7XX Filer to version 6.2R1 has anyone done this from version 5X? I am also wanting to try out the NDMP Copy built into 62R1. Does anyone have any good things or bad to say about it? I tried it in the past using a older version and a UNIX host and it sucked. Have they really made it better by integrating it into the OnTap code? Thanks for you help in advance

Is the 'administrators' account you mention a domain account, or a local account? The service has to start as a domain account. Unless the local W2K account (admin or otherwise) exists on the Filer w/ the same username and password, you're hosed. You didn't say what you were trying to map it for, but you could set it up in User Manager for Domains as the home directory and have it map that way. If you plan on having more than 1 mapping now or down the road, I might suggest you look at s product called Scriptlogic.
