Paul, I use 6.0.1R3 and noticed this as well when I started using user quotas. Here's the issue - the user quota is for the user on the partition NOT the home directory itself. So, for instance, I have users who own files in other users' home directories. Doing a 'du -k' (I only use our filer for NFS/Unix, not for CIFS/NT) of that other user's home directory will report much more than what the quota report shows. This is exactly what you are seeing. Running a 740 filer with 6.1.1R2P1. Just recently implemented user quotas on the home directories. Now when I bring up a quota report, the home directories show up but the amount the report is showing does not match the actual amount of data in the folder. I'm not talked a few K, but in one instance the report shows 4M of data when actually it is 1.2G. Thoughts? automatic drive mapping from a cifs client to the filer...

I created a share on an F740 (Ontap 6.0.1R3) and am trying to map a drive from a CIFS client (Windows 2000) automatically at logon point. I have no problems mapping the drive once I am logged on but would like it so that when a user logs onto the 2000 machine the drive gets mapped automatically. I have followed the microsoft suggestion which is copying the autoexnt, instexnt and servmess.dll files to the winnt/system32 root. I have also created a batch file whcih contains the following line 'net use j: \\filer\x03. I have tried the starting the service with the local account and also the administrators account but still nothing. I have also added another command to the batch file (md test) and when the service is started it creates the directory test but does not map the drive. Does anyone have a base line transfer speed using NDMP copy from one filer to another using 100 Full? I know there are a not of network variable that can fluctuate the speed. I am just trying to get a base line. Thanks

62R1 and NDMP copy

I am in the process of planning a upgrade of a F7XX Filer to version 6.2R1 has anyone done this from version 5X? I am also wanting to try out the NDMP Copy built into 62R1. Does anyone have any good things or bad to say about it? I tried it in the past using a older version and a UNIX host and it sucked. Have they really made it better by integrating it into the OnTap code? Thanks for you help in advance

Is the 'administrators' account you mention a domain account, or a local account? The service has to start as a domain account. Unless the local W2K account (admin or otherwise) exists on the Filer w/ the same username and password, you're hosed. You didn't say what you were trying to map it for, but you could set it up in User Manager for Domains as the home directory and have it map that way. If you plan on having more than 1 mapping now or down the road, I might suggest you look at s product called Scriptlogic. Hello; Check out Microsoft QArticle 250267, which talks about using some resource kit utilities; getsid and subinacl. Using these utilities, there isn't a problem migrating local security group ACLs from one server to another. We utilized this procedure when migrating data to our filer, and worked well - though it can take a long time, depending on the amount of data. Is a good idea to run one process per group at the same time, and not do them one after the other. Only problem with ROBOCOPY comes to bear when migrating data where LOCAL groups are used in file level ACL's because the SID is different across filers. Linda is working with me to explore the requirement of our users for an Independent NetApp user group in the UK. The process so far has been to meet and discuss with 8-10 customers who expressed an interest in being involved in an Independent group. From this it was agreed to survey broader customer base to determine broader interest. And dependent on results to build a user event to kick-off User group. Cluster failover and SIGLOST

When failing over between machines in a cluster, how transparent will this be in the area of NFS locks? Does the NetApp notify the client machines and ask them to reclaim the locks (potentially generating SIGLOST), or is the locking info synchronised between machines in the cluster so that it doesn't need to do that? Good morning, all, We're trying to do a quick evaluation of SRM products for some Win2K servers that we have and Wquinn's Storage Central/Quota Advisor is being mentioned. They list NetApp as a strategic partner on their website, although they don't list any products specifically for NAS. Does anyone have any experience with this software as it applies to NetApp's and/or Win2K environments? Also, any recommendations for other products that work with NAS and Win2K servers? We're primarily looking for quota enforcement and basic reporting across maybe 90 Win2K servers and 12 NetApp boxes. Many thanks in advance. home dirs can not be found for ftp users who are authenticated by NIS

Hi all, I use NIS to authenticate UNIX users, of course the users' home dirs are on my F840 filer, which look like /mount point/user name. However, my users request to access the filer via ftp, this time I also want to authenticate users by NIS, but only to find the users can not find their home directories. I know I have to configure their home dirs like /vol/vol0/home/..., but I don't think it is possible to do that at my NIS server. Is there another way to do that ? Could anybody give me a piece of good advice ? Thanks advance.

DISCLAIMER: Non-engineer speaking -- alarm bells should be ringing... It was my understanding that CIFS will preserve standard Unix Read/Write/Execute file permissions. However, does the filer even support Solaris ACLs? Not sure which other flavors of Unix have similar features (at least AIX does, and I would suspect essentially all do; different implementations, though). Previously ONTAP did not support Unix ACLs, because of their diverse implementations. However, I thought newer versions of NFS were supposed to address this. I heard that I may have phrased this badly, and now that I read it I agree. Let me try again. If you CIFS at your site, then the NT permissions may be important to you. If you back up over NFS, you will not capture the NT permissions on tape. Of course, if you back up over CIFS, the UNIX permissions are not captured. Can I watch/check progress of reconstructs?

Hello Toasters. I've got a volume that is reconstructing, but I would really like to be able to make estimate on it's time of completion. Generally just a "blah blocks out of blah done" works, since I can do the math to make a logical rough estimate as to the completion time. All I know to do for status during a reconstruct is to use vol status. Is there a better more verbose way that can be issued at will? I suppose you can just watch syslog too, but I'd prefer a command. Btw, I'm open to using a SNMP OID to get the info too, if I knew which IOD is was, and I don't recall any IODs that would tell me.
