At first glance it seems like a one-way account migration tool rather than a syncing mechanism. I would need to sync in either direction. Is anyone doing anything using LDAP for authentication? Any chance netapp is woring on that as an option rather than a PDC. I understand its not supported. It was my belief that someone on the toasters list was able to get it to work something UNIX. Actually the latest version of samba is like 99% of the way there. I got my filer talking to it and passing authentication requests from clients to the samba box. it looks like I just have a permissions issue right now. I was hoping there would be some netapp enineers on here that can *unofficially* offer some tips. UDP v. TCP

Kit is 810 filer 12x72GB, 2xSun E250 each connected on private fibre 1GB link, legato Networker to DLT7000 drives attached to the Sun (no NDMP). We've moved on from dotHill SANnet. There's been some discussion I've been following about fast read/slow write (or the reverse). We had our first filer installed in March and whilst performance was OK, backup of 250GB was taking 18 hours or more. Suppliers and NetApp had configured for improved performance but to no effect. Thanks to the thoughts on the list we changed yesterday from UDP to TCP and backup dropped to 5 hours - the expected performance. Daft buggers had optimised performance across the fibre for TCP and not UDP! So all the tuning effort done by the engineers had had no effect. FWIW script is appended for anyone's interest. We're going to get UDP optimised now, because of the reduced overhead - as it is a point to point connection so only the filer and the server are on the fibre. So many many thanks to the list - saved our bacon! Hi all, I've tried to install mrtg on linux box to monitor filer, but *.gif file doesn't appear in the directory. Does anybody in Toasterland have any real-world experience with DAFS and the DAFS Database Accelerator (DDA)? I have a slew of documentation, and I've put together a brief educational overview for a local Unix SIG meeting coming up soon. Samba 2.2.3a PDC

Im sorry if this topic has been beaten to death but searching the archive for weeks I cannot find the info I need. Has anyone successfully gotten Samba 2.2.3a to work as a PDC for OnTAP 6.1.2D3. Or rather, what recent versions of samba and ontap work? I can only find mention of samba pdc dated 1999...was hoping for something a bit more recent. My 2 pence: Let everyone know well in advance and schedule a time when everything front end can be shut down/disconnected. It's more painful and requires more scheduling but it reduces any risk of lost data/corruption if anyone is in the middle of an operations. Remember to check is any backups are still running, we got caught on this last week and took 1/2 hour to check that that all the TSM sessions had been disconnected. Disable autosupport before you reboot the filer each time, and check if it renables after booting. Saves a lot of calls and open support cases from NetApp support. Data ONTAP Upgrade Procedures

We are getting ready to upgrade to 6.2R1 on our F840C's and I was wondering what procedures some of you follow when doing upgrades. I am especially interested in hearing from those with Oracle databases NFS mounted to UNIX servers. Do you shutdown the databases before doing anything? Do you leave everything NFS mounted running as normal during the entire procedure? Do you leave clustering enabled and just takeover-giveback to complete the reboot after the download? Any pros/cons and horror stories are greatly appreciated,

Anybody do any tests of performance increase by adding disks to a volume?

We currently have a couple of Netapp 760 each with a 7x18gb shelf in a cluster config. The best performance we can get out of this is about 10MB writes. So we decided to test out what a gig card would do for us and the best we could get was 16MB writes and 30MB reads. In terms of testing the number of disks in a volume we saw an increase in performance by using a 7disk volume as opposed to a 3 disk volume, but surprisingly we didn't see a substantial increase when we went to 14 disks in a volume. So have any of you been able to test and justify using 14 disks as opposed to 7 disks in a volume? Have any of you been able to get better than 16MB writes? It also doesn't seem to benefit by having one shelf on one FC-AL card and another shelf on another FC-AL card? It seems the entire performance from what I can tell is limited by the nvram size. (16MB, half of 32MB nvram), thoughts? We have determined its not the gig cards in our suns that is limiting it as we can get 100MB sun gig card to sun gig card. Do you also experience strange quota output on a client? Filesystem usage quota limit timeleft files quota limit timeleft /f/admini 0 2147483644 1048576 0 -1 -1 No matter what I put in quotas file, it always appears like that. So far (in 6.1) it looked like: /f/admini 0 1048576 1048576 0 -1 -1 Which is not so misleading. I know soft quota is not meant to work over NFS as over UFS, but at least it could show up nicer. p.

I set the loaders SCSI ID to 0 and the drive to 1 and I have also tried other combinations also, keeping in mind that the SCSI card in the F760 uses ID 7. When I boot the filer up it just hangs after it checks the memory. If I unplug the autoloader it boots up with no problems. The autoloader is terminated and all connections are good. The NDMP message send to the Filer (NDMP_DATA_START_RECOVER) specifies a field named nlist, which is an array of filenames to be recovered. Therefor the maximum number of nlist entries restricts the number of files that can be recovered per message. Please note that this is the NDMP protocol. A clever backup application can get around this limitation but it looks that there are very few (or no) clever backup applications available. I have the last inum that was being written before the failure, so I attempting to run a find in the directory it was working on. However that fails too. The veritas guys were not clear on how this command should be run. I am currently using a mounted directory on a Unix client. Will this be able to find a specific inode on the Netapps? However, it is possible and entirely legal to create directory structures that are so deep that the absolute path name to a file is longer than 1024. To get around this, you usually "cd" down into the directory tree and use relative path names. But many dump utilities insist on listing each file as an absolute path name, and this is usually limited to 1024 bytes. Evidently "find" is also unhappy about your long file name. If you have any deep directory trees, or any directories with long names, then I suggest that you cd into the directory and run find . -inum ... from there. It's possible that someone may have inadvertently created a very deep directory tree due to a programming error of some sort. It very easy to do: while :; do mkdir trouble cd trouble done This will create trouble/trouble/trouble/trouble/ ... until the user hits a disk quota or the file system runs out of resources. Multistore/vfiler experiences?

Does anyone have any real-world experience with vfilers (the "MultiStore" capability in 6.2) they can share? I have an opportunity to consolidate a bunch of older F740s onto a pair of clustered F840s, but I'm not sure about putting all my eggs (well, half my eggs) into one basket. It isn't quite possible to get 100% availability with Netapps yet, and it's been nice in the past having a handful of discrete clustered F740 systems for limiting the effect of downtime. Filer takeover

Hello, I fail to understand the following sentence: "When you configure virtual interfaces for takeover, you must specify the interface name and not the IP address." I have one vif in each filer, separate ones, trunk1=192.168.1.103 on 1st filer and trunk1=192.168.1.104 on 2nd filer. Does the previous sentence mean I have to put: ifconfig trunk1 192.168.1.103 mediatype 100tx-fd partner trunk1 ? That doesn't make much sense. Tried also ifconfig trunk1 192.168.1.103 mediatype 100tx-fd partner 192.168.1.104 but keep getting partner 192.168.1.104 (not in use). This is a step change that I've been waiting about 18 months for * tape is much shorter therefore read times much faster * silicon head gives much closer tracks (and is less susceptible to alignment errors due to heat expansion) * tape is native 600GB capacity * 64MB per second transfer * third generation product is predicted at 2.4TB per tape, and 256MB per second <g> Obviously still to get here, but if (like me) you have a large DLT platform and were thinking of using SDLT as a compatible upgrade, it might be worth hanging on with DLT8000 drives, and change to O-MASS in a year or two. The battle of the tape format is continuing day by day. Many vendors are pushing people away from current DLT technology saying it's doomed, and that AIT isn't far behind. The big pushes are on LTO's and newer drives. I've had my eye on StorageTek for awhile now because they are doing some really neat things, namely FC to the drive in their T9840B drive. The T9940's are nice two with 60G native and 120G 2:1 compressed. But then it all comes down to your stratagy. If you have a small enviroment and you only want to back up, say 1-2TB, then you might like some of the 20slot AIT2/3 arrays from ADIC. SDLT is looking good with native capacities for 110G and higher with compression plus descent speed, however a key factor between DLT and AIT right now is also physical size. If you have a cramped facility you may not have adiquate room for DLT robots, which is where the nice and tiny AITs are handy. There are alot of choices. Currently I'm still liking LTO because it has 15MB/sec sustained rates per drive plus a 100G native capacity, but right now it probly comes down to cost more than anything. In which case, if you buy a robot, buy bigger than you need to so you can scale later. As for which is best specifically for a Filer, I know that you supposedly can put a robot directly onto a head, but I haven't seen anyone do it, and probly would opt to use a seperate gig-network with a dedicated backup server and anything I wanted on the back end of it.
