Try setting the link options on the filer to 100/full. Cisco switches are very vulnerable in that department. On the switch (when in enabled mode): 'set port mod/port speed 100' 'set port mod/port duplex full' On the filer: 'ifconfig interface mediatype 100tx-fd' Don't forget to change the ifconfig line in the rc file also... I've seen it happen more than once that synch-negotiation problems deteriorate performance very noticeably... Hi all, Unit 720 with on-board 100BaseT, DataONTAP 6.1, NFS over UDP 32K, all Sun clients. Performance degradation was obvious after the switch was upgraded to the Cisco 6050. Had been testing with the TCP changes and changing the UDP datagram size to 8K but no significant improvement. Is there any tweaking I can try before I attempt to add a quad card or gigabit card? What can I deduce from the ifstat below with regards to the list overflow, underflow value? I'm not sure whether it is an acceptable amount of errors or an obvious performance issue given the amount of data transferred. Another query I have is the "high" misses of the NFS cache reply stats. two nics on same subnet

Having atm and fe I wanted the latter to serve as a backup in case atm fails. So I configured atm to be .7 and fe to be .6 in the same subnet. It gave me a warning: ifconfig (warning): route already exists (probably due to another interface on the same subnet.) but that I (almost) expected. However, when I test it and pull out the atm, fe doesn't respond to me (quite successfully destroying my concept of backup/load balancing/automounter). That's not what I expected. Any thoughts? p.

I have 14 qtrees and wanted all of them to be in cifs.home_dir option, started from /vol/vol0/stud1994/%u/NT... and it said error: option value length too long so i renamed qtrees to shorter names, like s94, renamed vol0 to v and now it fits. But what if I have more qtrees? Any way to enlarge space for it? (I thought of /vol/vol0/*/%u%/NT, but didn't work) p.

OnTap SNMP Traps

Hello Toasterites, I've been (trying) to experiment with SNMP traps with a test filer I have. However, I've run into a road block, or so I think. Is it not true that OnTap should have a series of predefined traps? In the documentation it suggests using default traps by loading "/etc/defaults/traps", however a /etc/defaults directory doesn't exsist on any of the filers I have. Does this actually mean that if I want to add traps I should be placing them in /etc/default/traps instead of another file? I find it odd that OnTap would make me custom define _all_ of my traps (minus the standard traps defined in RFC1213). I'll even note that on page 563 of the OnTap 5.1 users guide it mentions there being Builtin traps as defined in the MIB for diskFailedShutdown,etc. So far, the only traps I've been sent from my test filer is "coldStarts" after I initialize SNMP traps (snmp init 1). I'm not to sure if this is the beginning of a failed disk or what. FC Actions (was RE: FC Link Stats)

Toasters, This might be a descent time to ask. What actions are taken to resolve "Link Failure" and "Loss of Sync". Both Underruns and Invalid CRCs aren't really a concern since it should generate a resend, or at work a loop reset to clear any blockage. However, I'm curious what happened after a Link Failure and Loss of Sync. On most systems I'd assume this would result in a LIP. I suppose you could respond to a Link Failure with a full loop reset (rather than LIP) but I'm not sure how their being handled. Is there comeone familiar enought with FC on the Filers to comment on which actions are taken to resolve each of these states at the FC level? Thank You. Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I've already tried without much luck. I thought perhaps more users on this list were sucessful in getting something other than Windows to work as a PDC. Its looking more and more like they are just rumors. Everything Ive heard so far starts with, "I haven't tried this but..." or "you should be able to...". Is there anyone at all with some personal experience (or even second hand experience) on if this even works? At first glance it seems like a one-way account migration tool rather than a syncing mechanism. I would need to sync in either direction. Is anyone doing anything using LDAP for authentication? Any chance netapp is woring on that as an option rather than a PDC. I understand its not supported. It was my belief that someone on the toasters list was able to get it to work something UNIX. Actually the latest version of samba is like 99% of the way there. I got my filer talking to it and passing authentication requests from clients to the samba box. it looks like I just have a permissions issue right now. I was hoping there would be some netapp enineers on here that can *unofficially* offer some tips. UDP v. TCP

Kit is 810 filer 12x72GB, 2xSun E250 each connected on private fibre 1GB link, legato Networker to DLT7000 drives attached to the Sun (no NDMP). We've moved on from dotHill SANnet. There's been some discussion I've been following about fast read/slow write (or the reverse). We had our first filer installed in March and whilst performance was OK, backup of 250GB was taking 18 hours or more. Suppliers and NetApp had configured for improved performance but to no effect. Thanks to the thoughts on the list we changed yesterday from UDP to TCP and backup dropped to 5 hours - the expected performance. Daft buggers had optimised performance across the fibre for TCP and not UDP! So all the tuning effort done by the engineers had had no effect. FWIW script is appended for anyone's interest. We're going to get UDP optimised now, because of the reduced overhead - as it is a point to point connection so only the filer and the server are on the fibre. So many many thanks to the list - saved our bacon! mrtg and linux

Does anybody in Toasterland have any real-world experience with DAFS and the DAFS Database Accelerator (DDA)? I have a slew of documentation, and I've put together a brief educational overview for a local Unix SIG meeting coming up soon. Samba 2.2.3a PDC

Im sorry if this topic has been beaten to death but searching the archive for weeks I cannot find the info I need. Has anyone successfully gotten Samba 2.2.3a to work as a PDC for OnTAP 6.1.2D3. Or rather, what recent versions of samba and ontap work? I can only find mention of samba pdc dated 1999...was hoping for something a bit more recent. My 2 pence: Let everyone know well in advance and schedule a time when everything front end can be shut down/disconnected. It's more painful and requires more scheduling but it reduces any risk of lost data/corruption if anyone is in the middle of an operations. Remember to check is any backups are still running, we got caught on this last week and took 1/2 hour to check that that all the TSM sessions had been disconnected. Disable autosupport before you reboot the filer each time, and check if it renables after booting. Saves a lot of calls and open support cases from NetApp support. Data ONTAP Upgrade Procedures

We are getting ready to upgrade to 6.2R1 on our F840C's and I was wondering what procedures some of you follow when doing upgrades. I am especially interested in hearing from those with Oracle databases NFS mounted to UNIX servers. Do you shutdown the databases before doing anything? Do you leave everything NFS mounted running as normal during the entire procedure? Do you leave clustering enabled and just takeover-giveback to complete the reboot after the download? Any pros/cons and horror stories are greatly appreciated,

Anybody do any tests of performance increase by adding disks to a volume?

We currently have a couple of Netapp 760 each with a 7x18gb shelf in a cluster config. The best performance we can get out of this is about 10MB writes. So we decided to test out what a gig card would do for us and the best we could get was 16MB writes and 30MB reads. In terms of testing the number of disks in a volume we saw an increase in performance by using a 7disk volume as opposed to a 3 disk volume, but surprisingly we didn't see a substantial increase when we went to 14 disks in a volume. So have any of you been able to test and justify using 14 disks as opposed to 7 disks in a volume? Have any of you been able to get better than 16MB writes? It also doesn't seem to benefit by having one shelf on one FC-AL card and another shelf on another FC-AL card? It seems the entire performance from what I can tell is limited by the nvram size. (16MB, half of 32MB nvram), thoughts? We have determined its not the gig cards in our suns that is limiting it as we can get 100MB sun gig card to sun gig card. quotas on 6.2

Do you also experience strange quota output on a client? Filesystem usage quota limit timeleft files quota limit timeleft /f/admini 0 2147483644 1048576 0 -1 -1 No matter what I put in quotas file, it always appears like that. So far (in 6.1) it looked like: /f/admini 0 1048576 1048576 0 -1 -1 Which is not so misleading. I know soft quota is not meant to work over NFS as over UFS, but at least it could show up nicer. p.

Hello All, Thanks your all of your help. The problem is that the DLT drive is and SE interface while the F760 is a Fast Wide Differential interface. Now for the next question. How would I get this thing to work with my F760. Is there another card I can buy for the Net App? The NDMP message send to the Filer (NDMP_DATA_START_RECOVER) specifies a field named nlist, which is an array of filenames to be recovered. Therefor the maximum number of nlist entries restricts the number of files that can be recovered per message. Please note that this is the NDMP protocol. A clever backup application can get around this limitation but it looks that there are very few (or no) clever backup applications available.
