CIFS permissions

I have a share (mixed security style) with several subdirectories. Most of the directories are NT style permission. One directory has continually had bizarre permissions problems (files seem to go back to Unix style permissions even when the "allow inheritable permission to propagate" flag is checked). I can go into more detail if necessary, but I think I might know what the problem is. This is the only directory that has the "Archive" attribute set (visible in both the General tab & the Secure Share tab under Properties). Could this account for the permissions problems? /etc/rmtab

From time to time, it is useful to see which NFS clients might currently be NFS-mounting software from a NetApp server. On a typical UNIX fileserver, the mount daemon maintains a text-format file "/etc/rmtab" (or similar) which can quickly be browsed (or grep'ped etc.). I see that NetApp also has an "/etc/rmtab" file, which seems to record similar information. But: (a) it seems undocumented; (b) it is not text-formatted, but seems rather to be a four-byte binary entry-length followed by the entry itself. Now whilst I could quickly hack together a C program or perl-script to make this human-readable, it would seem worthwhile to ask: (a) is "/etc/rmtab" supported? (b) is it documented? (page number?) (c) are there already some established and accepted ways to make its contents human-readable? (d) is there a FilerView (WWW) way of seeing the information in here? -- : David Lee I.T. hiding "." files?

Background: Most of our desktops are Windows, and most users are Windows-based, but the back-end servers have historically been UNIX-based (Samba for CIFS access), and we put a few "." files in place for each user, in case they use UNIX directly. Under UNIX, filenames beginning with "." are conventionally regarded as hidden: for example they don't show in the output from "ls". Similarly, when a UNIX filesystem is viewed via Samba from a Windows box, again the "." files are hidden from the users. We have just acquired two NetApp fileservers, running 6.1.2R1, and have noticed that the "." files are presented to the (mostly Windows) users. While this isn't a show-stopper, we wondered whether there was a option of telling the NetApp to classify "." files as hidden. Or something similar. chown in .snapshot ?

Hi I'm facing a boring problem I've changed the UID of a UNIX user and now he is unable to read in old .snapshot because he is not the owner of old files . is there a way to perform a chown in .snapshot directories when I try the filer answers the filesystem is readonly ... thx for any infos Frank

F740 thinks it's a C720, how to re-install?

Hi all, We've got an F740 from another site where they tried upgrading it to 6.1.1 something, but now the system thinks that it's a NetCache C720 instead. I want to upgrade it to 6.2R2, so I've downloaded the software and created the boot floppies (all five of them) and used them to boot. I then initialized six of the disks on the system, and made a new filesystem, but it still thinks that it's a NetCache. Has anyone run into this before? testdc brings up old IPs

Hello everyone, I've got a strange one here... I've got users in another domain that are trying to reach my F760 (6.2R2) and they are rarely ever to get in. I used the cifs testdc command to troubleshoot the problem and found something that is pretty strange. The command finds the domain controllers and is unable to connect to them, upon closer inspection, I realized that those were the old IPs for those servers. I've checked WINS, DNS, and the local hosts file and can find no entries for those old IP addresses. Is there another place I should be looking? FC/AL connection to tape library.

Is anyone using FC/AL to connect filers to tape libraries? I am using Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (ie no switch) to connect my filer running 6.2R2 to an ATL P3000 tape library. When I first did this the filer could not see the tape drives until it was rebooted (although it could see the FC bridge in the library a soon as it was plugged in). I just had to power cycle the library. Now the filer can't see the tape drives ("sysconfig -t" or "storage show tape" say "No tapes found.") but it can see the FC bridge. Is anyone else seeing this? Replaced Drive still shows red LED

I replaced a failed drive yesterday. However, the drive light still shows red, even though the filer thinks that the disk is there and is a spare. Is this a common problem? I am running OS 6.1R1, and the LCD is displaying the ops/sec as usual. Jordan

budtool tape recovery without budtool

I have an old design tape that was made with Budtool's ndmp option that I need to recover. We no longer have budtool but one of the selling points of BT was that you could recover your data without it. The tape was made by an ndmp dump direct to tape. Anyone know how to recover? I have attempted the following: mt -f rst0a rewind mt -f nrst0a fsf 1 mt -f nrst0a fsr 2 recover TfD nrst0a /vol/recovery Doing the above gets me a block issue: "block size should be 60 not 63". So I tried this (after positioning...): recover TfDb nrst0a /vol/recovery 60 It vascillates between returning "Bad Header" and something about a 4k block. we use the "normal" w2k progs and never use the filerview to administer filers. then you can use local groups and gibe shares the permissions on groups ... we also give no special permissions on the shares administrators full, users change and setting the permissions on the filesystem ... also hyena ist able to deal with the filers in a w2k-domain ... Question on CIFS and disk scrubbing?

Having never been able to to attend Netapp classes, bear with me if these are fairly simple. 1) CIFS was purchased but never actually used. It currently shows up when you type license. Will this in anyway affect the Netapp nfs performance? 2) Does disk scrubbing run automatically daily and if so is this changeable, by day, by time? 3) Can somebody give me the rundown on running wack? This is what I have off the net (somehow the this is how you do it part never got published). When to use WACK on a NetApp Filer From an email by Dave Hitz (12/1999) on the Toasters mailing list. The main difference between "wack" and fsck or scandisk is that you shouldn't need to run wack during normal operation. In particular, unlike UNIX and NT, you don't need to run "wack" after a system panic, or when you pull the plug without shutting the system down, or after a power failure. The WAFL filesystem uses a database technique called "shadow paging with NV-RAM log replay" to maintain a fully consistent state on disk even in the face of unexpected shutdowns. So when do you need to run wack? Suppose that you have a disk fail in RAID, and then when you try to reconstruct the data from the lost disk you discover that there is a bad sector on one of the other drives. Most of your file system data is just fine, but you've got a couple of blocks that can't be recovered. The RAID subsystem zeros both blocks, since that's the best that you can do, but now you need to run wack in order to fix things up, in case the zeroed blocks contained file system data like inodes, indirect blocks, or the free block map. And yes, I must confess that like any computer, NetApp systems do contain the occasional bug, so WAFL has a number of checks to make sure that the on-disk data looks reasonable, and if it finds a problem it will ask you to perform a wack. Our goal is for customers never to need to run wack, but the reality is that people sometimes do need to use it. this is how you do it. Thanks art hebert

6.2 does have sid caching enabled by default... Scott, You are seeing a performance hit because the Filer needs to do SID lookups to run the quota reports for CIFS. Unfortunately there is no way around this except to not run the quota reports as often (as you discovered) or schedule them to run off hours (if you have any). Comrades, I have a filer running NFS & CIFS with about 200Gb of data. We run quota reports fairly often (used to be every 15 minutes but now every 4 hours) to keep track of user account space. We've noticed that when quota runs, the performance of the box takes a big hit. The CPU gets pegged at 100% for up to 2 minutes, the NFS performance degrades such that moving a large file (say 10MB) can take nearly a minute! We don't see this sort of thing on straight-NFS filers, only on our F840 filer (running 6.1.R1) running both protocols. The mode running is NFS (not mixed). Normally a quota run on an NFS filer with the same amount of files/users is less than 30 seconds, if that. But this NFS/CIFS box is taking AGES. The hit on the box is so strong that it's really affecting our serving files to web users that have webpages hosted on the box. It's reached a point where I think Netapp's CIFS and/or quota implementation is seriously screwed. I might have to look at BlueArc or some other vendor for running our CIFS-based apps, as this is just not cutting it. We were one of the first (apparently) to upgrade to 6.2R1 and find the many "issues" with CIFS in that release. These problems actually forced us to revert_to 6.1 again. Unfortunately, it seems that some of these issues have not been corrected by the revert_to and I'd like to know if anyone has seen or solved any of the following problems: 1) Drives becoming disconnected quite frequently, usually leading to - Windows XP claiming to be offline and later trying to synchronize files - DOS applications running within Windows crashing - unable to write files - Being unable to save an Excel file that has been autosaving itself just fine to the same filer all day 2) Winframe servers showing high packet loss/retransmissions when reading files from the filer - Writes to the filers do not seem to be affected - Reading files from a Windows 2000 server does not show the same degree of packet loss 3) One of our filers no longer listens on port 445 and I don't even see an option to disable that anywhere If you have any Citrix tuning hints in general, or are running just fine without needing to do anything, please let me know. cleaning up rmtab

Hi, my rmtab file is huge and has a lot of obsolete entries. I wanna clean it up. Has any1 done that? I know that if it's possible at all, there must be some trickery involved, because just removing the file doesn't work - it creates recreated on the file - possibly from memory? Maybe removing AND rebooting will do the job? Thanks Igor
