I was interested in this as well, we want to run a scheduled snmp check which will verify our system is working. I would like to write some sort of RSH job to generate a generic trap which we could run weekly. Pulling out a fan is actually how we checked this, but it is not a preferable regular testing procedure. Any Ideas? Unscrew one of the fans, pull it out, wait for the light to turn orange, push it back in. That should fire 4 snmp traps: 1. FanFail 2. Status critical 3. FanRepaired 4. Mark (or anyone on Toasters), Where do you configure the "trip value"? Also, I have a normal trap setup to go to my SNMP host, but I am not getting alerts, especially when we have QTREES set up to alert us when a QTREE gets to 90%. I have had some QTREES exceed 90% and never was alerted. Thanks for all the feedback. Immediately after I sent the email I figured out that I can change the trip value to the normal value. Once I did this the traps started cranking up on our traphost. I was then able to view the trap message on our traphost and create notification script by replacing normal values for the actual trip values. All: I set up some snmp traps via filer view and I would like to simulate or test the traps to make sure they works. I set up traps for a failed disk, failed pdu, failed fan, and cluster failover notification. NT/filer slowdown

Some of our users in a large NT/filer environment experience a huge sporadic slowdown (20 min OK, 5 min slow) when a filer or NT BDC work with distant DCs through the secure channels over WAN links. Symptoms: windows explorer frozen, save as... in Word frozen/slow, filer share mapping lost, logon impossible, etc. Please tell me if you have experienced the similar problems... CIFS permissions

I have a share (mixed security style) with several subdirectories. Most of the directories are NT style permission. One directory has continually had bizarre permissions problems (files seem to go back to Unix style permissions even when the "allow inheritable permission to propagate" flag is checked). I can go into more detail if necessary, but I think I might know what the problem is. This is the only directory that has the "Archive" attribute set (visible in both the General tab & the Secure Share tab under Properties). Could this account for the permissions problems? From time to time, it is useful to see which NFS clients might currently be NFS-mounting software from a NetApp server. On a typical UNIX fileserver, the mount daemon maintains a text-format file "/etc/rmtab" (or similar) which can quickly be browsed (or grep'ped etc.). I see that NetApp also has an "/etc/rmtab" file, which seems to record similar information. But: (a) it seems undocumented; (b) it is not text-formatted, but seems rather to be a four-byte binary entry-length followed by the entry itself. Now whilst I could quickly hack together a C program or perl-script to make this human-readable, it would seem worthwhile to ask: (a) is "/etc/rmtab" supported? (b) is it documented? (page number?) (c) are there already some established and accepted ways to make its contents human-readable? (d) is there a FilerView (WWW) way of seeing the information in here? -- : David Lee I.T. hiding "." files?

Background: Most of our desktops are Windows, and most users are Windows-based, but the back-end servers have historically been UNIX-based (Samba for CIFS access), and we put a few "." files in place for each user, in case they use UNIX directly. Under UNIX, filenames beginning with "." are conventionally regarded as hidden: for example they don't show in the output from "ls". Similarly, when a UNIX filesystem is viewed via Samba from a Windows box, again the "." files are hidden from the users. We have just acquired two NetApp fileservers, running 6.1.2R1, and have noticed that the "." files are presented to the (mostly Windows) users. While this isn't a show-stopper, we wondered whether there was a option of telling the NetApp to classify "." files as hidden. Or something similar. F740 thinks it's a C720, how to re-install?

Hi all, We've got an F740 from another site where they tried upgrading it to 6.1.1 something, but now the system thinks that it's a NetCache C720 instead. I want to upgrade it to 6.2R2, so I've downloaded the software and created the boot floppies (all five of them) and used them to boot. I then initialized six of the disks on the system, and made a new filesystem, but it still thinks that it's a NetCache. Has anyone run into this before? testdc brings up old IPs

Hello everyone, I've got a strange one here... I've got users in another domain that are trying to reach my F760 (6.2R2) and they are rarely ever to get in. I used the cifs testdc command to troubleshoot the problem and found something that is pretty strange. The command finds the domain controllers and is unable to connect to them, upon closer inspection, I realized that those were the old IPs for those servers. I've checked WINS, DNS, and the local hosts file and can find no entries for those old IP addresses. Is there another place I should be looking? FC/AL connection to tape library.

Is anyone using FC/AL to connect filers to tape libraries? I am using Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (ie no switch) to connect my filer running 6.2R2 to an ATL P3000 tape library. When I first did this the filer could not see the tape drives until it was rebooted (although it could see the FC bridge in the library a soon as it was plugged in). I just had to power cycle the library. Now the filer can't see the tape drives ("sysconfig -t" or "storage show tape" say "No tapes found.") but it can see the FC bridge. Is anyone else seeing this? Replaced Drive still shows red LED

I replaced a failed drive yesterday. However, the drive light still shows red, even though the filer thinks that the disk is there and is a spare. Is this a common problem? I am running OS 6.1R1, and the LCD is displaying the ops/sec as usual. Jordan

budtool tape recovery without budtool

I have an old design tape that was made with Budtool's ndmp option that I need to recover. We no longer have budtool but one of the selling points of BT was that you could recover your data without it. The tape was made by an ndmp dump direct to tape. Anyone know how to recover? I have attempted the following: mt -f rst0a rewind mt -f nrst0a fsf 1 mt -f nrst0a fsr 2 recover TfD nrst0a /vol/recovery Doing the above gets me a block issue: "block size should be 60 not 63". So I tried this (after positioning...): recover TfDb nrst0a /vol/recovery 60 It vascillates between returning "Bad Header" and something about a 4k block.
