Remote shutdown of a filer

We have a (NT hosted) script that hits all the NT/2k servers and also telnets to the Sun server and "INIT 5"'s them. Hunted around NOW site, and Google groups, but to no avail. Anyone got a means (either from NT/2K or Sun) to automatically remotely (but cleanly!) stop/halt the Filer. And can you power it off that way too? No users will be operational (no UPS for the user community) so managing remote connections is not a concern. Hi! We've got 2 F540 filers, one running Data ONTAP 5.3.4, the other Data ONTAP 5.3.7R3 (latest version for F540). I'm trying to set up both filers with VIF multi (trunking) for faster network connection on a Cisco 3548 switch. On 5.3.4 everything working just fine following SAG. I recommend using NDMPCopy. It is non disruptive since it uses a Dump & Restore to disk, the process can be done on-line. If you are doing it on the same filer you might notice some CPU taxation, but nothing to serious. You can also use the Incremental NDMCopy features to accommodate gradual migration. If you need to use Qtrees you can use NDMPCopy to copy to Qtrees within the Destination Volume, just make sure you Create the Qtrees prior to starting the NDMPCopy. You can start 4 NDMPCopy processes concurrently. Hello, We are going to migrate data from 10 9GB shelves (2 Volumes) to 1 DS14 shelf (14 72GB disk) (also 2 volumes) on the F760 filer running DATAONTAP 6.1.1. Downtime allowed is minimum (4 hours). I was planning to use SnapMirror but worrying about fragmentation it will cause because of the difference in disk size. Any thoughts on that are appreciated. Thank you, Boris

NDMP and Tivoli Storage manager

We currently have a F820 Filer that we backup through an NT box without NDMP, but we are looking to move to NDMP backups as our data load increases. Does anyone have experience using NDMP backups with Tivoli Storage Manager? If so, does it seem to effective? How is your configuration set up? Our current Tivoli environment is a NSM 3466 with a 3494 Automated Tape Library. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Lotus Notes DB on the Netapp and Hot Backups?

Has anyone been able to do hot backups of a Lotus Notes database residing on the Netapp via Netbackup Lotus Notes backup agent? If so was there any special configuration which needed to be done to get it to work. Group quotas on shares

Does anyone have experience using group quotas on NT shares? Do I have to include the group name in the /etc/group file? If so, how is this done? Currently I have a local group of 20 users who have permission to access a share. I want to place a 500MB quota on this share without using an individual line in the /etc/quotas file for each user. Chris, This is a common error on the F760 motherboards. This error means that the NVRAM of your onboard FC controller is bad. If you are using a PCI card at this point, you can ignore the error. We always fix these errors by replacing the motherboard, but you really don't have to if you aren't using the onboard FC controller. rampant disk failure

I have recently seen surge in the number of disk failures on an F760 cluster in our datacenter. We have four F760's purchased a few months apart; one cluster has seen 12 disks fail in the past three months while the other cluster has seen two disks fail (I can only actually remember one, but I'm allowing for my failing memory as well). The clusters sit only a few feet apart so I am discounting environmental problems. Both clusters are running NetApp Release 6.1R1P1. The "bad" cluster is using mostly Seagate ST318203FC 18 GB disks, while the "good" cluster is mostly the Seagate ST118202FC drives (the infamous spin-up problem disks). The good cluster is unbalanced; one head has 52 disks and the other has 32. The bad cluster is evenly balanced (or it was before we started losing disks en masse) with 42 on each side. Both clusters are running disk firmware NA10 for the ST318203FC disks (I know, I just discovered that it's one rev out of date) and NA27 for the ST118202FC disks. The strangest part of this whole situation is that the disks rarely fail; they disappear and the partner complains that there is a cluster mismatch, breaks clustering, and sends out an email. The filer with the missing disk starts to rebuild (if it was a data disk) or merrily goes on its way (if it was a spare), but nothing ever shows up as broken. The disk just disappears. Short of going through and replacing every piece of hardware in the "bad" filers, I am at a loss of how to proceed. I've spent the morning searching NOW without luck. [Someone just pointed out to me that we have a few X221_ST318304FC disks with NA06 firmware in several of our filers, not just the good and bad clusters I've been describing, opening us up to bug 27068 (we're trying to schedule downtime to upgrade the firmware on all our filers now).] I am going to try upgrading the disk firmware on the filers as a first step, but if anyone else has seen this problem, or something similar, I would appreciate any input. disable boot menu

If the development data is on a separate volume from the production data you can do a volcopy which works quite well. There is an option to turn up the throttle of the volcopy to 10 (max) on source filer. The destination volume must be offline when the data is being copied and it will write over anything on the destination volume. If the dev and prod data is on the same volume, I've always used tar and directed the output to a nfs mounted filesystem from another filer. volcopy does work well, the destination volume blocks are copied identically to the source volume. One benefit of using ndmpcopy is that the data is written contiguously which will eliminate any fragmentation. ONTAP 6.2.1 vs 6.2R2D6 vs ???

I am wondering which release of ONTAP I should be running on a leading-edge (but production) server here... We are currently running 6.2R2D2 --- the D2 part because we wanted the fix for 70674. We usually run the FCS release, but not a Dx one, so this makes me somewhat uneasy. Now 6.2.1 is out and FCS, and has 70674 in its fix list, so it would be natural to change to that. But meanwhile we've got the question of 75012 (the CA-2002-19 bug-in- -most-known-DNS-resolvers thing) outstanding. We think we're pretty well protected against it being exploited, but will be a lot happier with a fix. This *isn't* listed as fixed in 6.2.1. The Bugs Online entry for 75012 names a number of Dx releases in which it is fixed, including 6.2R2D6, but there's no mention of a 6.2.1D<anything>. So I need to decide between 6.2.1, 6.2R2D6, or waiting for something else. Maybe toasters isn't the best place to ask about this ... can NetApp people even post to the list again yet? Ownership of "/etc"

On both our new filers, running 6.1.2R1, I have just noticed that the ownership of its "/vol/vol0/etc" belongs, not to the expected "root", but to an apparently arbitrary uid "20041" (gid "30"). Fortunately: (a) we have not allocated that uid to anyone; (b) I think the only machine to which "/etc" would be user-accessible (a Solaris UNIX box fro our user admin.) can have access restrictions to prevent telnet/ssh-like user-access. Nevertheless, it does seem a little worrying (correction, potentially very worrying) that this critical "/etc" directory is owned by an ordinary user. (Just suppose this October's student intake allocates that uid to someone who likes exploring...)
