informix on a filer

I know there has recently been a flurry of mails regarding Oracle on a filer but is anyone running Informix on one? I ask because there are alot of issues with the whole Informix/Onbar kludge that we are running into in an effort to evaluate this. Netapp has been involved in the preliminary discussions and will be in the future as well but I wanted to get an idea from real people in the real world as to the problems you solved and others you ran into. Here's a primer of what we think are the benefits: 1) snapshots - much faster than tape backup, takes minimal disk space 2) snapmirror - easy DR 3) snaprestore - fast recovery from an archive (snapshot) for testing and/or devel 4) snapvault - able to take snapshots every 5 minutes (avoid logical logs altogether) and migrate them to R100, increased retention period due to minimal space requirements 5) system recovery - data resides on filer so cpu becomes a FRU Here are a couple of issues/questions regarding the above: Can all Informix data (i.e., database, binaries, etc.) reside on nfs leaving only system files on the cpu (i.e. system, services, vfstab)? Can snapshots every 5 minutes really replace logical logs if 5 minutes is an acceptable point-in-time recovery period? Can snapshots be used to get a reliable backup without quiescing the database? In the event that logical logs are still required we would write them to mirrored internal drives. Has anyone managed to write these logs to nfs? CIFS access from W98 for OnTap 6.1.3R2

We recently upgraded from OnTap 6.1.2 to 6.1.3R2 in order to solve an authentication issue for Windows XP clients accessing shares using Active Directory credentials. The upgrade did indeed solve the problem but we now find we are left with a problem with access from Windows 98 clients, which worked prior to the upgrade. Any of you folks discovered this yet and if so, do you have a solution? Multiple tape backups

We have been trying to solve a problem with NetApp and they have not found a solution yet. We are using a Sun system running Solaris with attached tape drives to backup a filer remotely using the "dump" command. If you fill up a tape, it will not go to the next tape in the Sun Autoloader and it fails. We have been trying to use several different ways of putting in the tape device to get it to continue to a second tape with no luck. NetApp seams to be at a loss to how to do it as well. Here are the commands we have tried: (issued from the Sun system "jaguar") (/dev/rmt/2cn is the tape drive in the autoloader set to sequencial) rsh landrover dump 0uf jaguar:/dev/rmt/2cn,/dev/rmt/2cn /vol/vol0/processes rsh landrover dump 0uf jaguar:/dev/rmt/2cn,,jaguar:/dev/rmt/2cn /vol/vol0/processes There are several others. TSM backup of Netapp Filers

Hello Toasters Is there anybody out there using TSM for backup of filers, we have a case with a customer which experince problems with TSM backup. They are using Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) to back up qtrees on the Netapp filer. TSM is based on a client/server relationship, that means a W2K server running client software is able to communicate with a TSM server running under AIX over TCP/IP protocol. And they are backing up the filer via mapped drives from a W2K server (client). The error message we get are "Invalid file handle", and "Internal program error". As far as we understand this must be a problem with the backup client, but we can't be sure and we are not familiar with TSM at all. qtree Move Between Vols

I apologize in advance if this is in a FAQ or in the archives. I couldn't find an answer there, so... I've just brought a new vol on-line and need to move some qtrees off other vols that are filling up. All vols are attached to a single F820 and my admin host is running Solaris 8. What is the best (read: fastest) way to move a qtree between vols? The qtrees I'm moving are between 5 and 65 Gb in size. I've looked at ndmpcopy on the ndmp.org site. It's intended for moves between filers, but should work fine for moves within the same filer. Also, the site claims it's been tested on Solaris 2.5.1. Have others compiled and used it on Solaris 8? Are there other viable options besides ndmpcopy? I'd appreciate any advice from others who have gone down this road. TIA. Try changing the mandatory_scan option to off. We have TrendMicro Server Protect for NetApp. It's okay, but I'm worried about the reliablity. Is there a way to have a filer turn of virus scanning if there are no longer any registered Anti-Virus scanners? snapshot issue

Our webmaster, who gets email every day, reported this morning that her inbox was missing all messages received after June 10. the inbox is in a /var/mail filesystem mounted from a filer. Assuming that her inbox had gotten corrupted since yesterday, I looked at the snapshots to find one that had her recently received messages. [/var/mail/.snapshot/hourly.0] ls -l mthomas -rw-rw---- 1 mthomas mail 14482423 Aug 27 08:13 mthomas [/var/mail/.snapshot/hourly.1] ls -l mthomas -rw-rw---- 1 mthomas mail 14482423 Jun 10 12:21 mthomas Note that the file from the hourly.1 snapshot appears to be the same file as the one from the hourly.0 snapshot but it has a June 10 date. All the other snapshots also have the June 10 date. Has anyone seen anything like this with snapshots?

Phil, Type "cifs sessions" on the Netapp and see if the user is mapping to root? If not, make sure the option wafl.nt_admin_priv_map_to_root is set to on. Also, make sure the \\Netapp\C$\etc\hosts.equiv (/vol/vol0/etc/hosts.equiv) file has the user and machine which you are coming in from. Hi all, does anyone have installed SnapDrive 1.0 For SQL server 2000 on a non english Win2000 server ( we have a german Win2000 Server ) When installing the VLD-Manager we get an error message at the point where "VirtualizedLocalDiskManager - InstallShieldWizard" tries to start the service " Error 1920.Service SWSvc (SWSvc) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficent privileges to start system services and check your Event Log for more information" We doublechecked the privileges (domain\Administrator) - everything looks fine We found following message in the eventlog: "Der Dienst "Virtualized Local Disk Manager" wurde mit folgendem Fehler beendet: Die Systemfunktion LookupAccountName ist fehlgeschlagen. XP password woes into NetApp/NIS

Executive summary: o Two fileservers: one Solaris, other NetApp. Common NIS authentication. o Two clients: one W2K, other XP. Both "plaintext enabled" (for NIS). o W2K connects happily to both servers: XP fails to connect to NetApp. Detail: We are migrating our users' home directories from a Sun/Solaris fileserver to a NetApp (ONTAP 6.1.2R1). Both servers authenticate into a common NIS domain (passwords being in a usual Solaris-style "passwd.adjunct" map). We have hundreds of W2K clients. Using NIS means having their registry tweaked to use plaintext passwords (horrible, I know). This has all been working satisfactorily for months/years. Recently we have also had a small number of Windows XP clients. Until now, these have all (successfully) been connecting to the Solaris server. But the migration of data towards NetApp now means, for the first time, these XPs attempting to connect to the NetApp (same NIS domain). This fails (still OK against Solaris) with: System error 86 has occured The specified network password is not correct. This one has us stumped! Is there a known problem here? -- : David Lee I.T.
